Wednesday 11/8/00

I did not get out of bed to go to Metaphysics today. Megan woke me up with a phone call around three in the afternoon. Recapping the evening:

It had just been decided by the media that Florida went to Bush, giving Bush 271 electoral votes to Gore's 246 electoral votes. Fox News carried the story that Bush had won, and NBC and CBS followed shortly thereafter. I was in the process of taking off my pants and getting into bed. At the time, I was watching CBS. Dan Rather then said "Okay folks, hold on to the bedstead, wake up the kids... it now seems that Florida does not go to Bush, but only 629 votes separate Gore from Bush in Florida." So I button my pants and run down the hall looking for people to scream to. Then I find Rush and Patrick Link in Rush's room watching Fox News. I tell them, and they say that there has been nothing on Fox News about it, and I say, yeah, no doubt, but nonetheless, and Patrick sez that it's too late, Bush has already won, and I say no, that's not so, they're going to review Florida's situation. Then I go to Shane's room, where J.R. and I talk about how fucked-up the whole situation is and then J.R. read to us the story of the election of 1876.

So, the media jumped the gun on this and now they're ignoring their error. I wish I could ignore every mistake I've made. Also, they deal in abstractions so devoid of substance that they are nothing but filler, and any conclusions that derive from those abstractions can serve only to further confuse a stupid populace. Fox News asks everyone "How long is it going to be before we get a count?" and everyone says "Well, we don't know..." and Fox News comes back with "But how long?"

Also, PaineWebber advertises on Fox News next to the Perfect Omelet, which if I were PaineWebber would make me think about pulling my ad spots.

Now, to Fox News. I do not like Fox News. I find its presentation adolescent and obstreperous. It is as though the far-right guests on Politically Incorrect have been given an entire news channel. Though the press traditionally shows a liberal bias, the way to equalize the presentation certainly does not include being rude to consultants and guests. I do not trust Fox News and I will never heed what they report. Their slowness in reporting the uncertain status of Florida betrays a childish desire to browbeat the public into believing that Bush has won. This is insulting. It is as though they are trying to put one over on the American people. What a bunch of fuckers. Regardless of the political agenda advocated on Fox News, what a bunch of pushy fuckers.

Pushy fuckers.

By the way, we're going to have a recession. Bear market. I could be wrong, but that's what I'm guessing today. Anyway, the Dow is down 45 points as of right now (4:22 p.m. CST)

Jesus. Enough for now. More later.
