ALL’S WELL AS ENDS WELL
Chapter Twelve

I led everyone into Rose’s stateroom and looked into a closet, finding three lifebelts. I handed them to everyone except Katy and myself. Cal appeared around the corner with some other men. My eyes widened. I had forgotten that Jack had taken a coat and that Cal had had Lovejoy put the Heart of the Ocean into his pocket.

"Check his pockets," Cal said. The men did, and of course, they found the diamond and that the coat didn’t belong to him. I hit myself hard on the forehead. Why do they make these things so hard to remember? Jack was handcuffed and taken belowdecks.

I whispered to Katy, "You go with Jack. I’ll go with Rose."

"Fine." Katy scowled. "I’m stuck with the handcuffed one."

"You know, Katy, if you eat some sugar, I’m sure you’ll be able to get that key. Believe me, you’re dangerous when you eat sugar."

"There should be some in the sitting room." Katy looked around until finding the sugar bowl and gulping it down.

"Now, Katy, go get Lovejoy’s key."

"A-a-a-a-a-all right!" Katy said, buzzing with sugar.

"Use the sugar rush wisely, or else the lazy curse will get you quickly," I said. Katy nodded and rushed off to where Lovejoy and Jack had gone.

"Which room? Which room?" Katy sang merrily. She was running very fast, hoping to beat the water. All of a sudden, a door opened. Katy hid. It was Lovejoy. She saw the key poking out of his breast pocket. Katy licked her finger and made pretend tear streaks. She went running up to Mr. Lovejoy. "Oh...Mister. I can’t find my parents and the ship’s sinking, and--" Katy broke out in fake tears. Mr. Lovejoy took pity on her and picked her up. While heading down the hallway, Katy was fumbling with the key. She grabbed it and put it in her pocket. Katy kicked Lovejoy and jumped out of his arms. "Later, sucker!" Katy said before running around the corner again. Mr. Lovejoy was too surprised to even care.

Katy stopped at the door and knocked. "Jack, are you in there? Still alive? Heart beating?"

"Katy, just open the door," Jack said. Katy opened the door. "You’ve got the key, I presume?"

"Of course!" Katy said, putting her hand in her pocket, but it wasn’t there. "Crap," Katy said, looking down at the floor. The room was filling with water.

"You don’t have the key, do you?" Jack asked.

"It’s in the water somewhere...ah-ha! Got it!" Katy said. She quickly unlocked Jack’s handcuffs. They walked out the door. Katy saw the little boy who was killed in the movie. "Jack, help me rescue this kid," Katy said, walking over to the kid. Jack picked him up and they made their way upstairs. Luckily, the gates weren’t closed. Jack and Katy ran through them and made it up to the upper deck. "Phew," Katy said. "I wonder where Christine and Rose are." Katy spotted Rose, Sean, and I. Sean and I were pulling on Rose and Cal was trying to get Rose to come with him.

"Katy, do you think we should help?" Jack asked.

"No. Christine’s got good strength." That was true. Soon enough, I pulled Rose away from Cal. Soon, the five of us were reunited.
