Chapter 1

Saturday, April 19, 2003

“And I now pronounce you husband and wife,” Father Lassen said and Cheyenne Corinthos smiled, as she watched an old friend marry the man of her dreams. “You may kiss the bride.” The newly married couple kissed and Cheyenne continued smiling. Howard was seven years Skye’s senior, but she was happy and that made Cheyenne happy. Howard was a total sweetheart and treated Skye like a queen so age didn’t matter any. “I present to you Mr. and Mrs. Howard Dorough.” Everyone stood up and clapped and that’s when Cheyenne really noticed the one usher; tall, blonde, handsome, and a very killer smile.

“Wow!” Cheyenne said eyeing this stranger closely, as he began walking up the aisle. He looked her way and smiled and she just melted inside. “I think I’m in love, Codie.”

“There’s no such thing as love at first sight, CC,” Codie said.

“What would you know? You’re a player.”

“And proud of it.” They laughed. “Why do you think it’s the end of the world if you don’t fall in love and get married?”

“I don’t think it’s the end of the world, Code. All my friends are married, in love, and I feel lonely.”

“Love ain’t forever.”

“For some people.”

“Look at Bree; fell in love, married Reese, had a baby, and is now divorced.”

“Well Bree was young, stupid, and inexperienced.”

“And you’re not?”

“I’ve watched my mother counsel couples for years so I know a thing or two on what makes it and breaks it.” He shook his head, as the church started clearing out. “I don’t criticize you so you don’t criticize me.”

“Aye, Aye, Captain.” He saluted her.

“You’re such a dork.” He smiled and they walked up to the newlyweds. “Skye, I’m so happy for you.”

“Thank you,” Skye said and they hugged. “I’m so happy I found my prince.”

“Howie’s hardly a prince,” Cheyenne said and they laughed.

“Thank you, Cheyenne,” Howard said and they hugged.

“You hurt her and I’ll hurt you,” Cheyenne warned.

“Gotcha,” Howard said.

“Congrats,” Codie said.

“Thank you,” Skye and Howard said smiling. “We’ll see ya later,” Cheyenne said and they walked away.

“Do you think they’ll last?” Codie asked.

“Yes I think they’ll last. How can you ask that? Do you?”

“Maybe.”

“They’re happy together and I’m happy for them. Skye’s living out her dream and I ain’t jinxing her.”

“Neither am I. I wish them both the best.”

“Good; Howie is a part of our lives now and we must accept that since Skye is our friend.”

“And my ex.” Cheyenne rolled her eyes. “I still care about her and I want her happy.”

“She’s found happiness with Howie so don’t ruin it.”

“I’m not going to.”

“There are plenty of girls out there that would kill to be with you.”

“Ya think so?”

“No.” She laughed and he picked her up. “Ahh!” He walked outside still carrying her. “Put me down.” He put her on her feet and smiled.

“Why didn’t we ever hook up?” She looked at him.

“Lots of reasons, Codie. You’ve been my best friend forever and I didn’t want to ruin that by us getting involved.” He nodded. “I love you dearly though.” She kissed his cheek and they hugged.

“This is some party,” Cheyenne said.

“I’ve never been in a room with so many hot women,” Codie stated and Cheyenne just smiled. “I don’t know who to begin with.”

“I do.” She sighed while looking at the tall blonde standing across the room.

“I’m being serious.”

“Why don’t you start alphabetically?”

“There’s an idea.” She laughed and he looked at her. “Why don’t ya ask him to dance?”

“You of all people know I can’t dance.” He grinned. “So I will just sit here and be a wallflower.”

“C’mon.” He grabbed her hand and pulled her to the dance floor.

“Codie, what are you doing? I can’t dance.”

“Just follow my lead and you’ll be fine.” He smiled and got them dancing.

“Code, I can’t do this.”

“Once he sees the way your body moves, he’s not going to be able to resist.”

“But I have no rhythm.” Codie just smiled and kept her dancing. “You’re so going to die for this.”

“Just trust me.”

“That’s the last thing I want to do right now. You’re humiliating me so let me go.”

“Chey, what are you doing?” Skye asked. “You’re ruining my reception.” Cheyenne looked at her and Skye smiled.

“I know I can’t dance, Skye,” Cheyenne began, “but it doesn’t mean you have to rag on me about it.” She walked away and went outside. She sat down on a bench and sighed. “Some people just don’t get it.” Her cell rang and she looked at the number, but didn’t answer it.

“Why don’t you come back inside and dance with me?” Cheyenne looked and saw a tall blonde standing there smiling. “May I?”

“Oh, yeah.” She moved over and he sat beside her. “Nick Carter.” He extended his hand.

“Cheyenne Corinthos.” She put her hand in his and he kissed it.

“Nice to meet you.”

“Like wise.” He smiled.

“You dance?” She chuckled.

“I can do many things, but dancing is not one of them.”

“I’m sure you can slow dance.”

“If the situation calls for it.” He nodded.

“Bride or groom.”

“Bride; Skye and I went to school together. What about you?”

“Groom as you can tell.” She grinned. “I just wanted to tell you not to be embarrassed by your little dance scene; no one was watching.”

“You were.” He chuckled and gave a little grin.

“Right.”

“It’s not that I get embarrassed by it I just get mad. Codie does it all the time and it annoys the hell out of me.”

“I’m sure he does it out of love and just wants to get you dancing.”

“Maybe, but he can teach me privately instead of in public.” They laughed. “Codie’s a great guy though.”

“And he’s very lucky.”

“Why?”

“He’s got a beautiful girlfriend.”

“You think Codie and I are together?” He nodded. “We’re not. He’s my best friend and that’s it.”

“My mistake then.”

“It’s ok, because you’re not the first that thought that.” He looked at her. “We hang out a lot so people assume we’re an item.” He nodded. “I’m happily single.” She smiled. “Do you have a girlfriend?”

“Nope.” She grinned.

“Do you have the time?”

“Um…” He looked at his watch. “Going on twelve.” She nodded.

“Good thing I don’t have to work tomorrow.”

“Where do ya work?”

“I’m a bartender at Tyke’s.” He nodded. “It’s not what I want to do the rest of my life, but it pays the rent and buys me food.”

“That’s the important thing.”

“What do you do?”

“I’m a full time art student at Florida U and I’m a part time singer/drummer in a band.”

“What band?”

“Born Into Kaos…BIK.”

“I heard of them. They played at Tyke’s a couple times. I didn’t see you though.”

“I’ve been busy with school lately. It’s my last year and things are pretty crazy.”

“I know what ya mean. I had to take two years of business after grad and it was crazy.”

“Do you want to dance?”

“I can’t.”

“Slow dance? Anyone can slow dance.” She grinned. “Just one dance before the night is over.” She just looked at him and he smiled. “Please?”

“Alright, but just one.”

“Ok.” He took her hand and led her back inside.

“And for the last song of the night,” the DJ began, “some Berlin with ‘Take My Breath Away’.”

“You got lucky,” Nickolas said.

“Yeah,” Cheyenne said, as they started dancing. He smiled and she just looked at him, as he leaned down and kissed her.

Chapter 2

Sunday, April 20, 2003

“I didn’t kiss him,” Cheyenne said into the phone, as she found a parking spot. “He kissed me, Bree.”

“Some guy, that doesn’t know you, kissed you last night?” Bree questioned having a hard time believing it.

“Yes.”

“Where was Codie?”

“Off having a good time with some bimbo.” They laughed and Cheyenne got out of her car and started walking.

“What’d you do?”

“Kissed him in return.” She smiled. “Bree, if you seen this guy you would’ve kissed him also.”

“Is he taken?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“I asked him and he said ‘no’.”

“Is he a good kisser?”

“One of the best.”

“He’s gay.”

“No he’s not.”

“Any guy that can kiss good is gay. Trust me, because I know from experience.”

“Just because your husband was gay doesn’t mean every other guy is. Nick is not gay so just trust me.”

“Is he good in bed?”

“I wouldn’t know, but he’s good on his feet.”

“Gay.”

“Would you stop with the whole gay thing? It ain’t my fault Reese turned gay on you after you got married and had a baby.” She went to open a door just as someone else did.

“Sorry,” they said and Cheyenne looked to see Nickolas.

“Bree, I’ll have to call you back,” Cheyenne said into the phone and then hung up. “Hi.”

“Hi,” Nickolas said.

“Fancy meeting you here.”

“Yes it is.” She smiled. “Are you going in?”

“Yeah.”

“May I join you?”

“I guess so.” He smiled and opened the door. “The more the merrier.”

“Ladies first.” She grinned and walked inside and Nickolas followed.

“I’m meeting Codie, but I’m sure he won’t mind since he’s bringing a friend.” Nickolas nodded and she looked around, but didn’t see Codie. “I guess he’s not here yet.”

“How many?” the waitress asked.

“Four,” Cheyenne said.

“This way,” the waitress said and they followed.

“My butts vibrating,” Cheyenne chuckled.

“What?” Nickolas asked, as Cheyenne got her phone. “Oh.”

“Hello?” Cheyenne said sitting down. “Hey, Codie…really…sounds good…it’s ok…I got company…I’ll see ya tonight then…bye.” She turned her phone off and looked at Nickolas. “Codie’s not coming now.”

“That’s too bad.” She grinned.

“What can I get you to drink?” the waitress asked.

“Mountain Dew please,” Cheyenne said.

“I’ll have the same,” Nickolas said and Cheyenne smiled.

“Coming up,” the waitress said and walked away.

“What are you smiling at?” Nickolas asked.

“Practically everyone I know doesn’t like Mountain Dew,” Cheyenne stated.

“Well I’m not like everyone you know.”

“That you’re not.” They smiled. “You don’t have to sit over there. There’s plenty of room over here.” He continued smiling and moved next to her. She looked at him and smiled.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

“This has been fun,” Cheyenne said smiling. “I usually don’t have this much fun with someone I don’t know.”

“Me either,” Nickolas said. “I think this has been one of the best lunches I’ve ever had.” She smiled. “You’re very interesting.”

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

“Are you doing anything tonight?”

“Um, I actually have to study. I’ve got this test tomorrow and I don’t want to bomb it.”

“Ok.”

“Why?”

“Well Codie’s getting a bunch of us together and I just thought you might be interested.”

“It sounds interesting, but I really have to study.” She nodded. “I’m not just saying that to get out of it.”

“I understand and I don’t think that.” She smiled. “I was in college once.”

“Right.”

“Can I get you anything else?” the waitress asked.

“Just the check,” Nickolas replied and the waitress walked away. “You are ready right?”

“Yeah,” Cheyenne said.

“Just making sure,” Nickolas said and they laughed, as the waitress put the check on the table. “Thank you.” She just smiled and walked away. “I got this.”

“I can pay half.”

“It’s ok. I don’t mind.”

“Um, ok.” He grinned and they got up. “I can pay half though.”

“Don’t worry about it.”

“Are ya sure?”

“Yes.”

“Ok.” He handed money to the waitress. “Are you positive?” He looked at her and smiled. “Sorry.”

“Yeah.” She smiled and they walked out. He walked her to her car and they stood there. “Well…”

“I had a great time, Nick.”

“So did I.”

“Maybe we can do it again sometime.”

“I hope so.” She smiled and reached in her bag. She got out a piece of paper and wrote on it. She handed it to him and he looked at it.

“Call me sometime.”

“Definitely.” He got out his wallet and put the piece of paper in it.

“I guess I’ll see ya sometime.”

“Yeah.” They smiled. “I’ll see ya.” She nodded and he started walking away. She went to unlock her door and heard. “Cheyenne.” She looked at Nickolas, as he walked back over to her. “Um, about that kiss last night.”

“What about it?”

“I’m sorry. I just had too much to drink and wasn’t thinking straight.”

“Don’t worry about it. You’re not the first stranger to kiss me.” He just looked at her. “I’m kidding.” She laughed and so did he. “There’s no hard feelings.”

“Good.”

“If I had a problem with it I would’ve pushed you away and not kissed ya in return.”

“Of course.” She smiled.

“I’ll see ya, Nick.”

“See ya.” She kissed his cheek and then slowly backed up. They looked at each other a moment and then he kissed her again. She kissed him in return and felt his tongue go across her lips. She opened her mouth and Nickolas slipped his tongue inside. They started massaging each others tongues just as they heard a car horn. They pulled from their kiss and looked at each other. “Maybe I should…”

“Yeah.”

“I’ll see ya around.”

“Yeah.” He walked away and Cheyenne sighed. She smiled and went to open her car door, but bent down instead and picked something up. “Nick’s licenses.” She quickly stood up. “Hey, Nick.” She didn’t see him and looked around. “Damn it. I’ll just stop by his place and drop it off.” She got in her car and her phone rang. She turned it on and said, “Bree, hey…calm down…what is it? No…I can be there in twenty minutes…call Reese and I’ll be right there.” She started her car and drove off.

Chapter 3

“Bree, hey,” Cheyenne said, as the two girls hugged. “How’s America?”

“She has pneumonia,” Bree answered. “Dr. Lopez is with her now. She was crabby all morning so I should’ve known something was wrong.”

“It’s not your fault,” Reese said. “And she’s going to be fine.” “I hope so,” Bree said.

“She will be,” Cheyenne said. “Listen to Reese.”

“If something happens to her,” Bree began, “I won’t be able to forgive myself.”

“Nothing’s going to happen,” Reese stated. “America is a very strong little girl; just like her mother.”

“I’m just so scared for her,” Bree said. “I’m her mother so I have to be.”

“It’s understandable,” Cheyenne said comforting her friend. “I’m scared for her too.”

“We all are,” Reese said. “But we have to be strong for her also.”

“She didn’t do anything to deserve this,” Bree said. “She’s just a sweet little girl.” She continued crying.”

“Shh,” Cheyenne said. “She’s going to be fine and the doctor will tell us that shortly and then you can be with her.”

“It’s not going to be soon enough,” Bree said. “I want to know now.”

“I’ll go find someone,” Reese said walking away.

“What’s taking so long?” Bree questioned.

“It’s most likely nothing,” Cheyenne said.

“They should’ve had something already.”

“They’re probably just being thorough since she’s so small and fragile. They most likely don’t want to miss anything.”

“But they should know something.”

“Being impatient isn’t going to bring news any faster. Just be patient.”

“I can’t. That’s my daughter in there.”

“I know that.”

“I just want to hear that she’s going to be all right.”

“She is so don’t worry.”

“Ms. Newman,” Dr. Lopez said.

“How’s America?” Bree asked.

“It looks good,” Dr. Lopez replied. “Her fever broke, but I want to keep her overnight.”

“Just as long as she’s ok,” Bree stated.

“She is,” Dr. Lopez said.

“May I see her?” Bree wanted to know.

“Of course,” Dr. Lopez said and Bree quickly walked away.

“I knew she was going to be fine,” Cheyenne said.

“It looks that way,” Dr. Lopez said. “I can’t give you a complete diagnostic, but the odds look great.”

“Thank you, doctor,” Reese said.

“Are there any questions?” Dr. Lopez asked.

“Nope,” Cheyenne said.

“Then I’ll be back to check on America later,” Dr. Lopez said and he walked away.

“I’m glad America’s is going to be ok,” Cheyenne said.

“So am I,” Reese said and Cheyenne grinned.

“Dr. Lopez is cute.” Cheyenne looked at the doctor and Reese looked also.

“Cutes not the word, Honey.”

“Do you have a thing for the Latin folk?”

“Why?”

“If I remember correctly all your girlfriends were Latin.” He smiled. “Bree’s Latin and you married her, Miguel’s Latin, and Dr. Lopez is Latin.”

“And you’re half Latin.” She smiled. “They are pretty hot.”

“Well I don’t think the young Latin doc is in your league, Stud.”

“There is no harm in looking.”

“Of course not. Let’s go see your daughter and you can check out Dr. Lopez later.” She took his hand and pulled him along.
