Chapter 4

Monday, April 21, 2003

Cheyenne knocked on Nickolas’ front door the next afternoon and checked out the front of his house. He didn’t strike her as someone that could afford such a big place. Then again if you save your pennies right it could happen. She was lucky though since her house was a family heirloom and passed down. It wasn’t quite as big as Nickolas’ was, but it was big. She liked Nickolas’ house a little better anyway. She heard the door open and looked to see a tall brunette.

“May I help you?” the girl asked.

“Um, I’m looking for Nick Carter,” Cheyenne replied.

“In regards of what?” Ok, she didn’t know this lady so she wasn’t about to tell her the whole truth.

“I found his drivers license. Is he here?”

“He’s busy, but I’m his wife so I can take it.” Wife? He mentioned nothing about a wife. “Well I don’t know you and you could be lying.”

“I’m Keera Carter.”

“And you don’t look like the picture on the license. Is Nick here or not? If he’s not I can come back later or even call.”

“C’mon in.”

“Thank you.” Cheyenne walked in and Keera closed the door.

“This way.” They walked to another room and Keera said, “Wait here.” Cheyenne nodded and Keera walked away. Cheyenne sighed and picked up a picture.

“When is my luck going to change? I always seem to attract the married ones.” She put the picture down and looked at the others.

“Nick will be right in.” Cheyenne looked.

“Ok.”

“I’m sorry if I was rude at all. It’s just that I’m four months pregnant and moody.” And a baby on the way, that’s always great. That never happened before. “Pregnancy will do that to ya.”

“Do you have children?”

“No, just a goddaughter, but I was always by her mother’s side during those nine months. I know a little something about pregnancy.”

“I can’t wait to get this kid out of me.” Cheyenne grinned. “Would you like a drink?”

“No thanks.”

“Ok. Nick should be in any second.”

“Alright.” Keera walked out and Cheyenne just stood there. “I can cross this one off the list.” She sighed.

“I’m sorry to keep you waiting,” Nickolas said and Cheyenne looked. “Cheyenne?” He smiled. “What are you doing here?” He walked over to her.

“You dropped your license in the parking lot yesterday.” She handed it to him.

“Oh, thanks.”

“You’re welcome.” He smiled again. “I would’ve brought it by yesterday, but I had an emergency. Bree’s little girl…you neglected to tell me you’re married.” He looked at her and sighed.

“I know and I’m sorry.”

“I asked if you had a girlfriend.”

“And I don’t.” She only looked at him. “I have a wife.”

“And I thank you for telling me and not kissing me.”

“I didn’t expect you to find out this way. I was going to tell you.”

“When? In, like, a year after I fall madly in love?”

“I was going to call you to see if we can get together.”

“I have work.” He looked at her. “The baby’s a great touch too. Not only do you neglect to tell me you’re married, but you neglect to tell me you’re having a baby.”

“I’m sorry, but if you just give me a chance I can explain everything.”

“I don’t have time right now. I have to get to work.” She walked out and Nickolas followed.

“Cheyenne, wait up.”

“You have an obligation to your wife and unborn child and I ain’t going to stand in the way of that. The last thing I need is to get involved with a married man.”

“Will you please let me explain?” She stopped from getting in her car and looked at him.

“I had fun yesterday and you’re a great kisser, but you’re also married. I don’t need that right now.” She got in her car and drove off. Nickolas shook his head and walked back inside.

“Baby, Brent’s on the phone,” Keera said.

“I told you repeatedly not to call me that,” Nickolas said. “I’m not your ‘Baby’ and…”

“Brent’s on the phone.” She walked away and Nickolas picked up the phone.

“Yeah.”

“Hey, man,” Brent said.

“What’s up?”

“We have a gig tonight, but no singer. What do you say?”

“I don’t know, man. I got class in the morning.”

“We can’t afford to miss the gig. We cancel again the managers not going to book us again. This place is the big place. We already cancelled three shows and I don’t want to have to do it again.”

“What is this place?”

“Tyke’s on OBT.”

“Tyke’s?” He smiled.

“Yeah and it’s tonight.” He nodded and continued smiling. “Are you in?”

“Count me in.”

“Great. We have to be there by five for sound check.”

“Alright. I’ll meet ya there.”

“I’ll see ya in a bit.”

“Yeah.” Nickolas hung up the phone and smiled. Cheyenne was working tonight so this was a perfect opportunity. “Oh, Keera!” He walked from the parlor smiling.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

“Hey, bartender,” Nickolas said. “Can I get sex on the beach?”

“Sorry,” Cheyenne said. “But we’re closed ‘til six.”

“Who said anything about the drink?” He smiled and Cheyenne turned to look at him. “Hi.”

“What are you doing here?”

“I came to see you.”

“Like I said ‘we’re closed’.” She put glasses under the bar. “We open at six if you want to come back then.”

“Would you believe I’m here to sing?”

“Not a chance.”

“Well I am.”

“That’s nice. Shouldn’t you be with Mrs. Carter?”

“She’s at home.”

“You leave your pregnant wife at home while you go to bars? Typical guy.”

“I can explain everything if you leave me.”

“I’m not getting involved with a married man so just forget it. I don’t need an explanation.”

“It’s just a loveless marriage of convenience.” She looked at him.

“Nick, let’s get this sound check done,” Brent said.

“Right,” Nickolas said.

“Hey, Chey,” Brent said.

“Hey, Brent,” Cheyenne said.

“You guys know each other?” Nickolas asked.

“Uh, yeah,” Cheyenne replied. “We used to date.” Nickolas just looked at them.

“Actually, Chey’s the fiancée you never met,” Brent pointed out.

“That’s her?” Nickolas said.

“The one and only,” Brent said smiling.

“You didn’t do her justice man,” Nickolas stated and Cheyenne looked at them.

“I described her beautifully,” Brent said. “You have nothing to worry about, Chey.”

“Why would I worry?” Cheyenne asked. “You were always good to me.” She smiled.

“I’m going to go to the restroom and then we have to do the sound check,” Brent said walking away.

“You and my best friend?” Nickolas said amazed. “That’s interesting.”

“Why is it?” Cheyenne questioned.

“I don’t mean it to be a bad thing. It’s just that Brent is really outgoing and shit.”

“Unlike me?” He grinned.

“You just got this shy thing going on and…”

“Brent’s not shy at anything.”

“Exactly.”

“Opposites attract, Nick.”

“Yes they do.”

“Well I was working on the whole shy thing when Brent and I were together, but then things happened and it didn’t work out. I ain’t that shy since I work in a place like this.”

“What kind of things?”

“We don’t know each other well enough to discuss that.”

“I can ask Brent.”

“He doesn’t know, because it doesn’t concern him.” She smiled.

“You are a tough one.”

“Well I don’t like opening up to people I don’t know.”

“We can get to know each other.”

“You’re married.”

“Can’t ya get pass that?”

“No; getting involved with married men isn’t something I do.”

“Happen before?” She looked at him a moment then looked away.

“No.” She sighed. “I just don’t think its right coming between a happily married couple in love.”

“Keera and I are far from happy and in love…trust me.”

“Nick, let’s go,” Brent said.

“We’ll finish this later,” Nickolas said.

“Only if you give me a good tip,” Cheyenne said smiling and Nickolas walked away.

Chapter 5

“And I took this love for granted/and I know that it’s not right/and I tried to fight it, Baby, night after night/and I wish that I could see you/but I could not see the light/now I cry myself to sleep night after night...” Nickolas sang and Cheyenne stood behind the bar and just watched him. Something about the way he sang just amazed her so much. His voice was so raspy and sexy and it turned her on…a lot. Guys had turned her on before, but never like this. This was something she never felt before. She never thought anyone could turn her on by just their voice. “I saw the pictures of you with some/some other man/it made me go crazy/but now I can’t understand/and I took this love for granted/and I know that it’s not right…”

“Ain’t my husband an amazing singer?” Keera asked, but Cheyenne didn’t look. “Cheyenne?”

“What?” Cheyenne asked looking at her.

“I said, ain’t my husband an amazing singer?”

“Um, yeah. He’s got a great voice.”

“He’s amazing in many ways.”

“And kissing is one of them.”

“Excuse me?”

“Oh, um, nothing. I was just thinking out loud.”

“Ok.”

“Chey, may I get a bud?” someone asked.

“Coming up,” Cheyenne said. “Nick, said you wouldn’t be coming tonight.”

“Well I wanted to surprise him,” Keera said.

“I’m sure he will be,” Cheyenne said giving the customer their beer.

“Keep the change,” the guy said and Cheyenne smiled.

“Are you always this busy?” Keera asked.

“Mostly on weekends,” Cheyenne replied. “I guess word got out that they were going to be here.”

“Do a lot of people come and see them?”

“Yeah; they’re a big hit here. Excuse me.” She walked to the other end of the bar and looked at Nickolas. He looked at her and they smiled at each other.

“Prince Charming sings also,” Codie said and Cheyenne looked, as he smiled.

“And he’s also married,” Cheyenne said. “And expecting a child.”

“Poor you,” Codie said. “You really know how to pick them.” Cheyenne gave him the middle finger and Codie smiled. “Oh, this is Tess Evans.”

“Hi,” Cheyenne said. “Cheyenne Corinthos.”

“Hey,” Tess said, as they shook hands. “Nice to meet you.”

“Can I get you guys anything?” Cheyenne asked.

“Just a beer for me,” Tess replied.

“Same here,” Codie said.

“What kind?” Cheyenne asked.

“Don’t matter,” Tess stated. “Doesn’t faze me any.”

“You know what I like,” Codie said.

“Yeah,” Cheyenne said.

“So you like, Nick?” Tess said.

“I never said I did,” Cheyenne stated. “Despite whatever Codie might have told you.”

“I just told her that you said you were in love,” Codie replied and Cheyenne rolled her eyes. “And how he kissed you at the wedding.”

“That was before I knew he had a pregnant wife waiting at home,” Cheyenne pointed out.

“But you like him,” Tess said. “Right?” Cheyenne sighed.

“I don’t want to be the one that breaks up a marriage,” Cheyenne said. “Just leave it at that.”

“I highly doubt Nick would care if someone came between him and Keera,” Tess said. “In fact I think he’s waiting for it.” She nodded.

“I still don’t want to be that person,” Cheyenne stated.

“We’ll be back in ten,” Nickolas said and they looked, as the band walked off the stage.

“If he wasn’t married then maybe it would be different,” Cheyenne said.

“Nick’s a great guy,” Tess said. “You should give him a chance despite him being married.” Cheyenne sighed and looked at Nickolas, as he walked over.

“Like I told Nick,” Cheyenne began, “I don’t want to get involved with a married man.”

“Hey,” Nickolas said. “Can I get some water?”

“Yeah,” Cheyenne said going to the other end of the bar.

“Hey, Cheyenne,” Keera said. “Did you see where my husband went?” Cheyenne looked at her. “I lost him in the crowd.”

“Uh, I wasn’t watching,” Cheyenne lied. “Sorry.” She walked to the other end. “’Hey, Jenn, did you see where my husband went? I lost him in the crowd.’ Ugh! Just rub it in my face why don’t ya.” She slammed the bottle of water on the bar.

“Something wrong?” Codie asked

“Everything’s fine,” Cheyenne replied sighing. “Keera’s at the other end.”

“She’s here?” Nickolas asked and Cheyenne nodded.

“Apparently she wanted to surprise you,” Cheyenne said. “She’s drinking root beer so don’t worry about it.”

“Her being here is crazy,” Nick said shaking her head. “She never comes to these places.” He walked away and Cheyenne looked at him sighing.

“Hey, Chris,” Cheyenne said. “I’m going to take my break.” He nodded, as she walked away.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Cheyenne went into the bathroom, but didn’t see Nickolas. She knew he was there though and she sat on the sink. She waited a moment and then the one stall opened. She looked and Nickolas walked out of the stall. He looked at her, as he walked over to the sink. She had no idea what she was doing.

“Hey,” Cheyenne said. ,p>“What are you doing in here?” Nickolas questioned.

“It is a co-ed bathroom.”

“Right.” He turned the water on and washed his hands. She watched him and he looked at her. “What?”

“You’re an amazing singer.”

“Thanks.” She smiled and just looked at him. “Is there something you want?”

“Not really.” He just raised an eyebrow and dried his hands. “Is there something you want? Maybe something I can do for you.” He looked at her.

“You want to do something for me?”

“Well try to.” He grinned and walked back over to her.

“I need to draw a portrait for my final and I want it to be you. And I also want you to be the inspiration for my next song.”

“Excuse me?”

“I’m kidding.” She nodded. “For the song anyway…for now at least.” He got closer to her. “But the portrait I ain’t. I want to capture your exquisite beauty in a portrait.”

“You’re married, Nick, and I…” He put his finger to her lips and then slowly kissed her. She didn’t want this to happen and she didn’t want to kiss him in return, but she did. She couldn’t help herself. She got a funny feeling in her stomach whenever he was around. And it didn’t help any with his kisses being irresistible. But she didn’t want to get involved with a married man. She wanted to push him away, but her lips didn’t want to hear it. Her lips were in charge now and it was going to stay like that until Nickolas pulled away. But from the looks of it that wasn’t going to happen yet either.

Nickolas didn’t want to stop kissing Cheyenne. He missed his freedom. He missed being able to randomly kiss any girl he wanted and no one caring. He missed being with the ladies. He missed everything about being single. He wanted at least one act of sexual passion outside of marriage and Cheyenne was the lucky girl he picked. He didn’t care about his vows. He wasn’t in love with Keera anyway. He wasn’t in love with anyone. He just wanted to be with a woman with no strings attached. He wanted to be with Cheyenne…tonight. Everything about her was sexy. Her denial of not wanting to get involved with him was sexy, because it was obvious she did; her kiss said it all. Plus the way she was looking at him all night made it obvious. As he kissed her, he got a funny feeling in his stomach. It was the same feeling he got the last two times they kissed. He didn’t know what to make of it and he really didn’t want to worry about it at that moment.

After a couple more moments of kissing, Cheyenne finally pulled away and said, “Wow, um…” She took a deep breath.

“That was really great,” Nickolas said smiling.

“When I said I wasn’t getting involved with a married man I meant it.”

“So what are you doing here?”

“I’m on break.” “Well I really didn’t want to have to answer any of your wife’s questions regarding your whereabouts. It’s none of my business.”

“It could be.” She looked at him and got off the sink.

“I have to get back to work.” She went to walk away and he grabbed her hand. She looked at their hands and then at him.

“I’m not in love with Keera. Yes she’s having my child, but it doesn’t mean anything. She’s in love with me, but I don’t reciprocate those feelings.”

“You’re still married and that’s a problem for me.”

“Your body language says otherwise.” She sighed and pulled her hand away. “So does your kiss.” She just looked at him and a door opened.

They kept their gaze on each other and heard Keera, “Hey there you are, Baby.”

“Here I am,” Nickolas said keeping his gaze on Cheyenne.

“I came to surprise you,” Keera said and Nickolas grinned. “Brent thought you would be in here.”

“I didn’t tell you to come check,” Brent said going into a stall.

“Is Nick trying to charm his way to free drinks?” Keera asked.

“No,” Cheyenne said. “He was just thanking me again for returning his license.”

“That’s the kind of guy Nick is,” Keera stated. “He’s just amazing.”

“Yeah,” Cheyenne said. “I have to get back to work though. “ She walked out of the restroom and back to the bar.

Chapter 6

Cheyenne started cleaning off the tables after closing, as there was a knock on the door. She sighed and put the stuff down and slowly walked to the door. There was another knock and she shook her head. She waited a second before opening it and then slowly did so. She looked and saw Nickolas standing there.

“I forgot my guitar,” Nickolas said.

“Um, ok,” Cheyenne said letting him inside. “When did it start raining?”

“It just started.”

“Oh.” She closed the door and locked it. “It’s still on the stage.” He nodded and walked over, as she went back to cleaning up.

“Do you always stay this late?”

“Well I’m the only one who doesn’t have someone waiting at home. I get paid for it so I don’t mind.” She took stuff back to the kitchen and when she came back out, Nickolas was still standing there. “You still here?”

“I was hoping we could talk.”

“About what?”

“I only married Keera, because she was pregnant. I thought it was the right thing to do.”

“Taking responsibility for his actions; that’s a real man.”

“I’m not in love with her though.” Cheyenne just shook her head and continued what she was doing. “She was just supposed to be a one time thing and then a couple months ago she dropped the big bombshell on me. So we got married so our child would have both parents.”

“Why are you telling me this? It’s none of my business.”

“I don’t want Keera and you should know that I owe you an explanation since I shoved my tongue down your throat.” She looked at him.

“You could’ve been honest with me from the beginning. I asked if you had a girlfriend and you said ‘no’. I didn’t ask if you were married, because I didn’t see a ring. Most people wear their wedding bands.”

“I don’t wear mine, because our marriage is a lie.”

“You could’ve told me the truth. I’m a big girl and can handle it. There was no need to lie to me.”

“I didn’t tell you, because I was afraid you wouldn’t want to see me again. I wanted to get to know you and I thought that since I was married you wouldn’t go for it.”

“I hate liars, Nick, so lets get that straight. If you want to get to know me then honesty and trust is the best policy. I can’t base a friendship or whatever on a bunch of damn lies. If you can’t be honest with me then let’s stop this now so neither of us gets attached.”

“I wasn’t sure we had something to stop.”

“Well if you can be honest with me then maybe we can start something.”

“I’ll be honest with you. Whatever you want to know I’ll tell you the truth.”

“Thank you.”

“I want us to be friends at least if you don’t want to get involved with a married man.” She grinned. “I have a few single friends if you’re interested.” He smiled. “Lane, Brent…”

“I can pick out my own guys if you don’t mind.”

“Well aren’t friends supposed to help each other in relationships and stuff?”

“Uh, yeah, but…”

“Ok then. I’m just trying to be a friend.”

“Right.” He grinned and she started wiping off the tables. She continued for a moment, with Nickolas watching her then she stopped and looked at him.

“What?”

“Um…” She took a deep breath and cleared her throat. Nickolas looked at her and waited. “I was, um, just…um, I was just wondering if, um, ya know, that-that-that time we... well those three times we…” He raised an eyebrow and made a funny face. Cheyenne chuckled and he smiled. “Don’t do that.”

“What?”

“Don’t make that face.”

“Sorry.” He did it again and she laughed.

“I want to be serious.”

“Ok.” He got serious. “Go on.”

“Those three times we kissed, ya know.” He nodded. “Well, um, I was just wondering if, um…well I, uh, I got this, um…this, um…this feeling…”

“What kind of feeling?”

“Um, I don’t know. It was just this, uh, funny feeling I got inside. A good funny feeling though. I was just wondering if you…”

“If I got the same feeling?”

“I know it sounds weird and all.”

“It doesn’t.”

“Um…just forget I said anything.”

“Um, ok.” She grinned and went back to her duties. “I’m going to go then.”

“Ok.”

“I’ll see ya later then.”

“See ya.” Nickolas sighed and started to the door. Cheyenne continued wiping off the tables and looked at Nickolas. She watched him walk to the door and stop, but didn’t open it. “Cheyenne.” He turned around and saw her looking at him.

“What?”

“I have to be honest. I don’t think I can do the whole friends thing with you.”

“Why not?”

“Ever since the wedding I can’t stop thinking about you. I have this attraction towards you and I’m not going to be able to not act on these feelings when I’m around you.”

“We just met, Nick, and I don’t…”

“Want to get involved with a married man. I know that, but can’t you just make an exception this time. For me at least.” He smiled.

“I can’t and I’m sorry.” He sighed. “I just can’t give into that temptation. It’s infidelity on your part.”

“God knows I’m not in love with Keera. I don’t see what harm it would do to anyone.”

“Probably a lot since you’re married and expecting a child.” He just smiled and kissed her. “This isn’t fair to Keera.” He started kissing her neck and she left out a soft moan. “No one’s ever…I never…”

“Shh.” He pulled her closer so she could feel how much he wanted her. “There’s no need for talking when body language says so much more.” He took his tongue across her lips. “You taste so good.”

“Why are you doing this? You know how I feel about the marriage issue.”

“I know how you feel about that and I also know how you’re feeling towards me.” He put his hands on her waist and pulled her closer to him aggressively. They looked at each other and he teased her with a kiss. “Don’t try to deny how you’re feeling right now. I’ve been with enough women to know.” She closed her eyes and bit her lip, as Nickolas kissed her neck. She slowly put her arms around him, as he put a hand between her thighs.

“Nick, I don’t…” He breathing grew heavier, as he worked his hand inside her panties.

“Don’t fight it, Cheyenne; it’s what we both want.” She opened her eyes and looked at him.

“I don’t want to make a mistake.”

“I promise it won’t be.” He kissed her.

“There’s an extra room in the back with a bed.” He smiled, as she jumped up and wrapped her legs around him. They started kissing again and he carried her over to a pool table.

“Who needs a bed?” She just smiled and he laid her back.

Chapter 7

Tuesday, April 22, 2003

“There you are,” Codie said, as Cheyenne stepped up onto her porch. “Aren’t those your work clothes?”

“I got stuck at Tyke’s last night,” Cheyenne stated unlocking her door and going inside.

“That rain was crazy last night.”

“Yeah.”

“So what’d ya do last night then?”

“Nothing; just cleaned up and went to sleep.”

“Tess called and said that she saw Nick walk out of Tyke’s this morning.” Cheyenne looked at him.

“He forgot his guitar last night and stopped by to get it.”

“This morning?”

“Yeah; he was on his way to school so he stopped and got it.”

“Whatever.”

“He’s married so nothing’s going to happen with us.”

“Does he love his wife?”

“What kind of question is that? He married her didn’t he?”

“Doesn’t mean anything. He could’ve gotten her knocked up and did the right thing by marrying her.” Cheyenne sighed and went into the kitchen. “They don’t necessarily have to be in love. People are getting married everyday, because they get pregnant and think it’s the right thing.”

“Is that Tess’ story?”

“No.” He went into the kitchen. “That’s Nick’s story.”

“What?”

“Tess is his cousin so she would know. She said Nick doesn’t love Keera and he just married her for the baby. Nick’s a good guy so give him a chance.”

“Yeah, he’s such a good guy, Codie. He’s thinking about infidelity.”

“And so does every other married guy. It’s a human thing.”

“And I don’t want to be a part of his infidelity fantasies.”

“But you are part of his infidelity fantasies and he’s part of your fantasies. I seen the way he was looking at you last night and I think it’s time you finally got laid, Miss Virgin.” Cheyenne just smiled and took a bite of her banana, as there was a knock. “What’s that smile for?”

“Nothing.” She walked from the kitchen and to the front door. She opened it and saw Tess. “Hey.”

“Hey,” Tess said.

“Let me guess, Codie gave you the address?”

“He invited me for lunch.”

“Then c’mon in.”

“Thank you.” Cheyenne closed the door. “So I saw Nick leaving Tyke’s this morning.” “Uh, yeah. He forgot his guitar last night so he stopped by and got it.”

“Right.” Tess looked at her closely a moment and there was another knock.

“Codie’s in the kitchen. Just walk straight down the hall and make a left.”

“Ok.” Cheyenne watched her walk away and go into the kitchen before opening the door.

“Hey,” Nickolas said and Cheyenne looked behind her and then went out on the porch with Nickolas.

“What are you doing here?” Cheyenne asked.

“I came to see you.” He smiled.

“I thought you had class?”

“I took the morning off.”

“Well now is not the best time to be here.”

“Why not?”

“Because I have company.”

“Oh.”

“It wouldn’t look good if you stayed. I mean a married man, a single woman, the odds are a little against us.”

“I guess you’re right.”

“I am.”

“I can come by after classes then.”

“Just call first, ok.”

“Ok.”

“Now get out of here before someone sees you.”

“Ok.” He looked around quick and then kissed her. “I’ll see ya later.”

“Later.” She smiled and watched him walk to his car. He got in his car and looked at her smiling. She smiled in return and he drove off. She sighed and then went back inside.

“Who was that?” Codie asked and Cheyenne looked at him.

“Um, just a salesman,” Cheyenne lied.

“Right,” Codie said. “I bet it was Nick.”

“Why would I tell a married man where I live?” Cheyenne questioned.

“Because it’s a nice big place and you live all alone,” Tess said smiling. “So it’d be the perfect hiding spot for a married man and his mistress.”

“I ain’t anyone’s mistress,” Cheyenne said. “And if I was why would I tell anyone.”

“She’s got a point,” Codie said. “Chey’s good at keeping her secrets from people, but it’s obvious she’s smitten with your cousin.”

“And it’s unfortunate he’s married,” Cheyenne said. “I’m going to get a shower and then I’ll join you for lunch.” She grinned and walked away.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

“I don’t think you could’ve come at a worse time this morning,” Cheyenne said into the phone.

“Why?” Nickolas asked.

“Because your cousin Tess was here.”

“Tess Evans?”

“Yeah.”

“The one that looks like that hot blonde from that alien show, um…”

“’Roswell’ and her name’s Katherine Heigl.”

“Yeah.”

“Yeah.”

“What was she doing there?”

“Apparently she’s the friend Codie met at the wedding.”

“Really?”

“Uh huh.”

“Then next time we better be more careful.”

“Who said there’ll be a next time?”

“Well I’m hoping there is.”

“We shouldn't even be talking about this over the phone.”

“Why not?”

“Because we don’t know who is listening.”

“Right.”

“Besides, I don’t want to get involved with happily married men.”

“I’m far from happily married.”

“But you’re still married and that poses a problem.”

“Can’t ya just forget that one little detail?”

“Nope.”

“Why not?”

“Because it’s not going to be that easy.”

“Last night you thought differently.”

“We both had too much to drink.”

“Whatever.” They laughed.

“You do know that you took my virginity last night, right?”

“Is that so?”

“Yeah.”

“You didn’t strike me as the virgin type.”

“Why’s that? Because I work at a bar and wear skimpy clothes to work?”

“Well that thought did cross my mind.”

“And what other thoughts?”

“Brent said you guys were really close and I just thought…”

“You thought we had sex to get that close.”

“Uh, yeah.”

“Well we didn’t and you can ask Brent if you really want to. He will tell you we didn’t and you can be happy with knowing you were my first.” He smiled on his end of the phone. “And if I end up pregnant will you do the right thing and marry me? Just like you did the right thing by marrying Keera.”

“Let’s talk about that when the time comes…if it comes. I already have an unborn child to worry about.”

“Right.” She sighed.

“Sorry.”

“Don’t worry about it, because I mentioned it.”

“Maybe you’re right after all.”

“Right about what?”

“The two of us getting involved and shit. I’m married and having a kid to a woman I don’t love in anyway. Maybe this ain’t going to work after all, ya know.”

“Aren’t you the one that told me to forget that you’re married and having a child? Now you’re having second thoughts?”
