Hager's 331 coupe

Well, alot of hard work went into this project over the past year or so. Hager bought an 87 LX that was in need of a makeover, and he had the bug for a car to really race; one he wouldn't have to drive every day since he purchased his 2001 GT.

The project kicked into gear around October 2000, and finally got the car ready for the track for it's Maiden run in mid-September 2001.

Sept. 2000..Sept. 2001
September 2002

The coupe has ran a best of 10.10 @ 134 mph at Rockingham Dragway in October 2002 with a race weight of 3130 lbs. with Craig in the car.

There's still some tuning/tinkering to do here and there; but here's the setup on the car right now:

Engine & Fuel Delivery:
Ford Performance Solutions 331
forged pistons, nodular crank, file-fit rings
~10.8:1 compression
FRPP R302 block
Nitrous Express 150-shot nitrous kit

Stage 2 ported Avenger heads
Port matched Edelbrock Victor Jr. intake
Demon 750 carb
MAC 1 3/4" long tube headers
custom 3" H-pipe
Dynomax Race Magnum mufflers w/ custom turn-downs
MSD Pro Billet distributor
Barry Grant fuel pump
Barry Grant fuel pressure regulator
Aeroquip fittings & stainless braided lines
Romac balancer
Be-Cool aluminum radiator
Meziere electric water pump
custom electric fan

Suspension/Chassis:
Dynamic Mighty-Mite C4 tranny
Dynamic Converters (Frank Lupo) custom stall converter
Dynamic trans brake
Hurst Roll Control
FRPP aluminum driveshaft
FRPP 4.56 gears
Eibach Drag Launch springs
Lakewood drag shocks
UPR Pro Billet adjustable rear suspension
8-point rollcage
HAL tubular K-member
trunk-mount battery kit
cross-brace subframe connectors
MidSouth aluminum race wing

Alot of team effort was involved in the buildup of this car. Craig & Tommy Hager, "Capwedge" Mike Castle, Billy Brown, Derrick Massey, Johnny Ball, and Tom Pauley @ Tom's Custom Auto all had big roles in the completion.

These are pics of it's buildup as the months went by:

October 2000

This is the delivered engine just out of the crate. This Demon 750 is a real nice carb. It is very well made. Also a pic of he 331 w/ the Demon on it. Man, this damn engine is too pretty to put in the car!!

........

These pics show the huge ports on both sides of the heads. The pic on the right *attempts* to show the size of the port match to the intake side of the heads. LOL, if you can't tell, I *kinda* like these heads.

Looks a little rough here. But after a good paint job, she'll be awesome!
The car has a front bumper, we removed it just so that we could remove the engine that was previously in the car.

June 2001

Capwedge installed the rollcage; and the interior looks a little better with the Welds & new Cowl hood.

..
The tubular K-member harnessing the nice 331 and Lakewood shocks/4-cylinder springs. Here is also the trunk-mount battery and NMRA-required cut-off switch.

July 2001
ALMOST finished.....

The Maiden Voyage!

September 2001

March 2002

In March 02, Capwedge installed the electric water pump and the solid lifter cam. WOW, the solid lifter cam made such a big difference. It was almost like a power adder!
After Capwedge got finished, Johnny Ball painted the car Wildfire Red.

Mid-2002: It's Ready for the Gauntlet
The Summer of 2002 finally brought the time for us to race the coupe in NMRA/FFW/WFC events across the country.
A last-minute broken TCT stall converter caused the coupe to miss the Spring Rockingham Civil Wars in late April and the Columbus NMRA race in early May (although we still attended).
But when everything got together, we took the coupe to the World Ford Challenge 5 in St. Louis in May; the Bristol Fun Ford Weekend race in August; and the Fall Rockingham Civil Wars in October.
I have to say that Bristol Dragway is my favorite track I've been to, with Gateway Intl. Raceway a close 2nd.

Craig is now beginning the next stage of the race car... the turbo kit and the new FAST EFI & ported TFS-R heads. Good stuff!!
And the car will be painted a shade of grey, somewhere along the lines of Ford's Dark Shadow Grey like in this Mustang
