Chapter 19
“Is
she going to be ok?” Jeff asked the doctor for the fifth time in the ten
minutes after they had reached the hospital.
“She’s
lost a lot of blood and unless you step outside and let me do my job then I
don’t know.” The doctor replied as he looked up to Jeff who still stood by
Leah on the bed holding her hand.
“I’m
not leaving her.”
“Please
sir we need you to step outside.” The doctor asked again as he pushed a drip
into Leah’s arm.
“NO!!
I’m NOT leaving her.”
“Sir
please leave!” the doctor said becoming inpatient.
“NO!”
Jeff yelled back.
“Nurse
take the young man out of here will you?” the doctor asked the nurse who then
took hold of Jeff’s arm and tried to pull him from Leah’s side, she
succeeded.
“One
second please?” Jeff begged her. She nodded and Jeff went back to Leah and
looked down at her pale face. The only colour on it was the dried blood that had
come from the cut above her eyebrow. He lent down and softly stroked her
forehead. “I’ll be right outside ok? You’re going to be fine. I’ll be
back soon I promise.” When he finished he kissed her on the forehead and left
the room. The nurse turned to leave but the doctor called to her.
“Get
the young man checked out to. He looks like he took a few bangs himself, clean
the cut on his forehead up.”
“Ok.”
Was the nurse’s reply as she left to catch Jeff up.
As
Matt and Molly walked into the reception of the hospital they looked around at
the near empty waiting room. They walked up to the desk and the receptionist
looked up from her computer. “Can I help you?”
“Yes.
A young lady was just brought in. We want to see her.” Matt said gripping
Molly’s hand.
“What
was her name?”
“Leah
Hammond” Molly answered.
“Let
me just check for you.” The receptionist replied as she turned back to her
computer. “No. I’m sorry. No one has been checked in under that name. Maybe
she has been brought in but not registered yet. Would you like me to go and
check for you?”
“Yes
please.” Matt asked as the lady left the desk. “They probably haven’t
registered her yet Mol.”
“I
guess. But what happened to her? And where’s Jeff and what happened to him?”
“I
don’t know sweetie I wish I did.” He kissed her forehead lightly. “I wish
I did.”
“How
did you get this cut Jeff?” the nurse asked him as she finished cleaning the
cut and put three stitches in it.
“Flying
china.” He said smiling at her but when he went to laugh he grabbed his ribs
as the pain hit him.
“And
the ribs?”
“Flying
feet.” He said again smiling.
“I’ll
tape them up for you but then I need you to go the front desk and fill in some
forms stating your name and address. Is that ok?”
“Yeh
sure. What about Leah? I want to know how she is.”
“Well,
you go to the front desk and I’ll meet you out then once I’ve been to see
how she is. Ok?”
“Thanks.”
Jeff said as the nurse began to tape his ribs.
At
the police station Billy sat in a cell. He stared blankly at the wall as he had
been for the past fifteen minutes. A flood of guilt filled him as he saw the
image of Leah on the sofa, the blood coming form where the bullet went in. Where
he had shot her. He hadn’t meant to shoot her. She got in the way. He wasn’t
even going to shoot Jeff, but he knew Jeff and he wouldn’t give up. Like
always when Billy was representing the HWA and Jeff OMEGA in the days before
either made it into a big time federation and before he went to jail, Jeff would
never give up, not until the very bitter sweet end. Jeff got in his way, he
shouldn’t have been with Leah when she got those letters, and she should have
been on her own, she should have been vulnerable and come back to him. He had
regretted killing her parents after she left him and didn’t come back.
He
wanted to know what Leah had told Jeff. Had she told him about him betting her
until she couldn’t stand anymore and until she would cough up blood and cry
and beg for mercy, for him to stop his beating, but he wouldn’t, he
couldn’t. She would spend days and sometimes weeks indoors, not going to
school after she had taken a beating, but each time she took him back, he would
tell her it didn’t mean to do it and she would believe it. She did it because
they were in love. But when Billy took her parents lives so they could be
eternally happy she wanted to kill him. He asked her to marry him, but she gave
him a whole speech about why she couldn’t and why she wouldn’t. That was the
last time he saw her before he started sending her the letters. He knew she had
seen him hit her parents with the car but he figured if she hated him now why
wouldn’t she talk to the cops, why wouldn’t she turn her parents murderer
in? Billy wasn’t surprised when he was arrested, but he had a stash of letters
and he had a friend that said he would post them on certain dates for him, as he
didn’t know what they were about.
When
he was in jail he had devised the plan to get back at her, no matter how much he
still loved her. He couldn’t let her get away with it. And with the help of
his cellmate he had escaped form jail and was free to put his plan into action.
But then there was Jeff. He had gotten in the way. And if it weren’t for him
Leah would be his again.
The
bolt on the door undoing broke him from his thoughts. A uniformed policeman
stepped in followed by two detectives. He looked up at them from his position on
the edge of the hard bed.
“Come
with us please sir.” One of them spoke. Billy got to his feet and was
instantly handcuffed to the uniformed officer. Then he was lead to a small
interview room where he saw his lawyer. He sat down as they undid the handcuffs.
The detectives sat and started the recording tape.
