Chapter 8
“Clo, please look a me.” Jeff asked her four hours after she had woken
up. The doctors had checked her over and there were no signs of brain damage
of any other life threatening injuries. “Please baby.” Jeff begged as
tears rolled down his face. Chloe was laying on her side facing the wall
away from Jeff. She had been like that since the doctors had left her. She
had rejected Matt, Eddie, Sonia and Eddie parents. The only thing they had
left to try was Jamie. Matt had gone to the boat for some sleep and he
returned with Jamie. He entered the room and looked at Jeff who stood at
Chloe’s bedside. His shoulders where hung low and all Matt could hear his
sobs as his wife rejected him.
“Clo.” Matt spoke softly. “We have someone to see you.” He said as
he set Jamie down on the edge of the bed. “It’s Jamie.”
Chloe didn’t move. The brothers could only hear her trying to keep herself
from crying. Jeff reached out and touched her side softy. He felt her try
and pull away from his touch but he wouldn’t let her.
“Baby, Jamie’s here to see you.”
Jeff moved his hand over her hip and sat on the edge of the bed. He rested
on arm on the pillow and stroked the side of her face. She still hadn’t
moved and by now Jamie was climbing clumsily over her. He crawled up the
side of the bed and sat crossed leg in the small space between his mummy and
the wall.
Chloe opened her eyes and looked at her son. She lifted on hand and ran a
finger down his cheek. He giggled and grabbed her hand and chewed on a
finger as he always did. He again lay down by her and this time he pulled on
her hair that was spread messily over the pillow. She smiled as she watched
him. She loved him more than anything in the world.
Suddenly Chloe felt Jeff’s lips brush over her cheek. She rolled her head
around and looked up to him. She mouthed. “I’m sorry.” And rolled her
head away again.
Matt turned and left the room, as he knew Jeff wanted to talk to Chloe, and
having Jamie there was one way he knew she would talk to him.
Jamie fell asleep at his mum’s side. And Chloe knew what was coming. She
rolled onto her back and looked up at Jeff, who looked down on her with
loving caring eyes.
“There’s no need to be sorry.” He said wiping away her tears.
“But I am.” She said as she tried to sit up. Jeff helped her and he
propped her pillows up for her. “Thanks.”
“What happened?”
“The race?”
“Yeh.”
“I didn’t feel well before and I raced, I shouldn’t have I know that
but I needed to.”
“What caused the accident?”
“I don’t know. I can’t remember.”
“It’ll come to you.”
“I don’t want it to.”
“I know sweetie, but they want to know.”
“Who?”
“The team, the press and the FIA (Formula one investigation association)
do.”
“I can’t tell them anything.”
“Enough about that. You just have to get better. Can I get you
anything?”
“My head hurts.”
“I’ll get the doctor to get you something ok?”
“NO! Don’t leave me Jeff. I’m scared. I don’t want to be alone.
Please.”
“OK. I’ll never leave you.”
“I love you Jeff.”
“I love you too angel.” Jeff said as he lay down on the bed beside her.
She leaned up against him and buried her head into the crook of his neck.
“Why are you scared?”
“Because I could be dead.”
“Don’t say that sweetie. You’re not dead.”
“But I could off been. I could have killed myself. And I could have killed
someone else.”
“But you didn’t. Everyone else is ok. You have to stop worrying about
them and start worrying about yourself. You have to concentrate on getting
better.”
“I’m scared Jeff. I don’t want to get back in a car.”
“Give it time sweetie. You will. And you will get through this.”
