chapter 5
“What are you
gunna do?” Matt asked as he and Amy followed Jeff to the door. Jeff opened it
and stepped out into the hall.
“You two keep
a watch out for him…. or anybody coz you don’t know what he looks like.”
“Ok.” Matt
and Amy replied together. They both headed of opposite ways down the corridor,
Matt turned back to Jeff who was preparing himself to knock on the door. “Be
careful”
“I will.” He
replied as he turned his attention back to the door. He took two deep breaths
and lightly taped on the door.
He heard light
footsteps heading for the door, and then they stopped. A weak voice spoke out.
“Who is it?”
Jeff froze
before replying. “Room service.”
The door slowly
opened and a weak fragile body stood before him. He felt tears in his eyes as he
looked at her. “Your not room service.” She spoke startling him. “Go
away.”
“I know I’m
not but please listen to me.”
“If my
boyfriend comes back he won’t be happy I’m talking to you. Goodbye.” She
said trying to shut the door but couldn’t as Jeff was pushing it open. He
pushed it far enough for him to slide through the gap into the room. The Leah
moved back from him. He shut the door and turned the key in the lock.
“Wh….
what…do you…want?” Leah asked shaking as she back against a wall.
“I’m going
to help you.”
“I don’t
need help.”
“You do. I
know he beats you.”
“No body beats
me. What are you talking about?”
“You know what
I’m talking about.” Jeff said as he walked towards her. He looked at the
fear on her face. He stops a meter in front of her. “I’m Jeff. What’s your
name?”
“None of you
business.”
“Please? Let
me help you?”
“I DON’T
need your help.”
“What’s your
name? And you go need my help…. and I need yours?”
“I’m Leah.
Why do you need my help?”
“Because
someone is doing to me what he is doing to you.”
“Please just
go. He will be back and he gets angry.”
“Then he hits
you right.”
Leah looked at
the floor. She was ashamed he knew her secret. She felt his hand lift her chin.
“Right?” he questioned.
She slowly
nodded. She hadn’t realised until no she had tears rolling down her cheeks and
Jeff was pressed up against her. His strong arms pulling her away from the wall.
He pulled her against him. Her hands slowly moved from her sides and run up
Jeff’s sides and across his back as she hugged him back. She buried her head
into the crook of his neck as he slowly ran his hands over her back calming her.
When Leah pulled
away from Jeff she was still crying and he also had tears in his eyes as he
watched the young girl walk away from him. He turned around and followed her.
“You had
better go.” She said trying to block out the emotions that her voice held.
He'll be back and he’ll hurt both of us.”
“I’m not
leaving with out you. He’s never going to hurt you again.”
“You can’t
stop him. I’ve tried running. He finds me. And why should I leave with you?
Why should I trust you? How do I know that you not the same as him? That your
not going to hurt me the way he does?” she blurted out as she fell onto the
edge of the bed and buried her head in her hands.
“I’m not
him. I don’t know how to show you that. But he’s going to destroy you Leah.
The way somebody has destroyed me.” He said as he sat down beside her. He took
her hand and slowly used his other hand to pull her face up to look at him.
“Please let me help you. I want to help you the way nobody ever helped me.”
“How do I know
your not lying?”
Jeff let go over
her hand and face and slowly lifted his shirt up. Leah looked at the bruises
then back to Jeff’s face. She once again looked at the bruises, this time
gently running her fingers over them. “Do you believe me now?” he asked as
he dropped his shirt back down and took her hand. Leah was still crying and it
was tearing Jeff’s heart into two, he knew that feeling, the feeling of not
believing anybody, not trusting anybody. But he hoped he could get her before
she became him. He gently pulled her onto his lap and held her as she cried.
