Chapter 6: The Call…

An hour later and half way home, I started jogging.  It took me half the time it would’ve if I had kept walking.  I walked up to the front steps and tried to open the door.  Locked?  Why is it locked?  Jeff’s car was still here and so were Faith’s and mine.  I reached into my pocket, digging for my keys and nothing turned up.  “Crap,” I murmured.  “I can’t believe I left them on the counter.  Damn it.”  I reached up and rung the doorbell.  Why no answer?  What the hell are they doing?  Wait, I don’t wanna know, I told myself while ringing it a second time.  I heard a pair of feet pad along the hard floor as they came towards the door.  The front door finally swung open and Jeff stood there with a dark pair of jeans on that were low on the hips and unbuckled.  I looked up and he was toweling off his hair.

“Oops, my bad.  I left my keys on the counter, otherwise I wouldn’t have bothered you,” I said quickly stepping inside and unhooking my dog.  I heard the door close with a soft click.  I walked towards the kitchen with a fast pace, turning on the sink and washing my hands slowly and thoroughly.  I heard him pull the chair out and sit down.  Why is he following me, and why do I feel like he’s staring at me?  I wondered while turning my head towards him and sure enough, he was looking at me.  I turned back around and put the towel back on the rack when I finished dying my hands.  I took a step to the side and opened the fridge, took out a bottle of water, walked to the opposite chair as Jeff’s and sat.  He turned in his seat, looking me directly in the eyes.

“So, Jeff, Where’s Faith?”  I asked while taking a sip of my water.

“Well, when you left, she and I went upstairs, so she could uhh, show me something…” He paused a moment and thought a sec, “Anyway, she fell asleep a little after you left,” He said.  “Oh, I hope you don’t mind, but I used the shower in the hall,” he finished.

“Nah, it’s all good.”  I smiled.  “Ya know, Faith’s usually up and ready by 8, I’m guessing you two got to know each other better.”  I stated.  He chuckled, “Yeah, you could say that.”

“I just did.  You know, that shit will probably kill you if you keep drinking it this early,” I commenting on the Pepsi in his hand and it only being 9 almost 9:30 in the morning.

“I’m a risk taker,” was his reply.

“Oh really?  If you’re such a risk taker, what do you do for a living?”  I asked him wanting to know.  He was about to answer when the phone rang.

“Hold that thought,” I said while rushing to get the phone.  While walking quickly to get the phone, I started thinking about how he was cool and why Faith had “taken him in” last night.

“Hello?” I answered holding the phone to my left ear.

“Took you long enough,” the person on the other end said.

“Whatever, how can I help you?” I asked the male on the other end of the phone.

“It’s more the question of what can you do for me,” he said.

“Stop playing with me jerk off, what do you want?” I asked hastily and tensed at what he had just said.

“Oh, so you don’t remember me?  That’s a surprise, I’ll leave you be then.”  He said.

“Yeah, you do that asshole,” I said getting ready to hang up.  All of a sudden I heard something that made me freeze…

“Well beautiful, Nice talking to you, and I hope it was as good for you as it was for me,” he said evilly while chuckling.  I turned to Jeff and saw that he was looking at me giving me a weird look.  I then started to shake and some tears started to form.  I turned away from Jeff’s gaze.

“Adam?” I asked in a small scared voice.

“Scared all ready?  Things never change, now do they?”  He asked smoothly.

“How, What, who the fuck gave you this number?” I asked nearly screaming into the phone obviously very pissed.

“Quit stuttering, you should know by now, that I have my ways.  And great job of keeping your mouth shut beautiful.”

“Fuck you, if you call me once more time, I’ll get the cops involved, and quit fucking calling me that!”  I yelled into the phone then slammed the phone back in it’s original position, leaned on the sink and tried to stop shaking.  Don’t cry, you can’t cry.  You can’t let yourself be weak.  You gotta be strong Laura.  I kept telling myself.

Jeff put a hand on my shoulder and I quickly spun around on my heels and spat, “Don’t fucking touch me!”  As the tears started to roll down my cheeks.  He went to put his hand on my shoulder again.  “Don’t, please,” I begged in a small voice.

“All right, why are you shaking?  What’s wrong?  Who was on the phone?”  He asked truly concerned.  I sunk to the floor and images of the past were replaying in my mind.  “Why can’t I be left alone?  Haven’t I gone through enough?  Why now?” I asked myself in a mumble, trying to push the memories out of my head.

“Say what?” Jeff asked confused.  I totally forgot he was there and flinched a little.  I had stopped crying, but hadn’t stopped shaking just yet.

“Nothing, you did nothing.  Don’t mind me.  I’m really sorry that you had to see that.  Please don’t take offense, but I just wanna be left alone right now.” I said fast and shakily while getting to my feet.

“All right.  I won’t.  We’ll just talk a little later then,” Jeff said, still genuinely concerned.

“Help yourself to anything you want.  And when you get a chance, wake Faith up.  I don’t want her to sleep all day.  And don’t worry about me, I’ll be fine.”  I said not waiting for an answer and walked out of the kitchen towards my room.  I locked the door and went to take another shower.  “A shower’s good,” I told myself, getting in, washing myself thoroughly, and trying to block the images of the past and the sound of Adam’s voice that I had heard earlier, from going through my head…
