Chapter 6

They stood there for a few minutes before a paramedic appeared from the fire escape. He walked over to them.

“Is everything ok here now?” he asked as Jeff lifted his head so he could look at Chloe.

“Yeh, it’s ok now.” He replied as Chloe again placed her head on his chest.

“Would you mind if I checked her over, just to be safe?” he asked looking at Chloe’s shaking body.

Her halter neck had gone see through and when she left Matt she had put a mini skirt on instead of her trousers, her feet hurt from standing in her heels, her soaked long curly brown hair hung down by her face. She felt Jeff let her go as the Paramedic took out a torch and shined it into her eyes. Jeff took hold of her hand and stood behind her.

After the paramedic had done a few more checks, he said she was fine apart from being wet and cold. He then left them alone.

“Are you ok?” Jeff asked as he removed his thin jacket and helped her put it on.

“Yeh, I’ll be ok. Can we get down from here, I’m scared of heights.”

“Sure, come on.” He took he hand again and led her to the fire escape. Jeff went down first, Chloe soon followed. She struggled with her footing as she was still shaking but she made it to the bottom.

Chloe then spotted Eddie heading for his car. She left Jeff and ran to speak to him. “Eddie, wait.” She said as her shaking legs made it to him. “I just want to say thank-you. If it wasn’t for you I would have jumped.”

“I didn’t do anything, I think it’s Jeff you need to thank.” He said as he reached into the back of his car and pulled out a bomber jacket, he handed it to her.

“Thanks” she said as she put it on. “I need to thank you because if you hadn’t of come up I would have jumped before Jeff even got there.”

“No, you wouldn’t. If you were going to do it you would have done it as soon as you got up there.”

“How come you know so much about people jumping of buildings?” she joked as she threw her arms around his neck. “Sorry, I probably just ruined your reputation!!”

“It’s alright, so long as you don’t tell everyone I have a nice side, and that I get scared.” He joked as he got into his car and undid the window. “I’d only do it for a mate.” He said as she lent down through the car window and kissed him on the cheek.

“Go enjoy your party.”

“SHIT!!! I had completely forgotten that!! I’d better go.” He started the engine. “ And don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone about this.”

“Thanks. Bye. Hey, Eddie wait a sec!!!” she shouted after him as she ran back to his car window. “Can you do me a favour?”

“Sure.”

“Well, can you go to my trailer and get Matt out of there?”
”I don’t know who Matt is but I’ll tell him.”

“And can you lock it for me?”

“Yeh, I’ll give you the keys tomorrow. Bye.”

“Bye”

Chloe then felt two strong arms come around her waist; she turned in them and came face to face with Jeff. They didn’t say anything; Jeff just took her hand and led her to his hotel room.

After going back to Jeff’s hotel room, Chloe and Jeff had sat on the sofa and talked for hours. Jeff still couldn’t understand why Chloe felt she had to take her life.

“Clo, I know we have been talking all night but I still don’t get it, why did you feel you had to go up there and jump?”

Chloe shuffled uncomfortably in her seat. She sat there a second before she answered him. “I felt that I had lost the person I love, that was bad enough, but to add to it I was pregnant with his brothers baby and then just before I drove here, Matt came to my trailer and I was upset, he comforted me, well, sort of. Things got kind of out of hand, we had sex, I didn’t want to, but I didn’t know what else to do. But all the time we where together like that, I couldn’t stop thinking what a whore I was and that I was letting a guy take control of me and my body, I then realised that by doing what I was doing that I was a complete bitch that didn’t deserve to be here.”

When she finished she felt tears fill her eyes again, she hadn’t cried since she was on the roof but, after telling Jeff that, she knew he would be even more hurt and she tried to avoid looking at him. One, so he couldn’t see her tears, two, because she didn’t want to see the pain on his face.    

She felt his hand touch her leg she flinched as he did. He could see how she was trying to hide herself from him, he wasn’t going to let her, they had been through too much for her to hide away now.

He got of the sofa and pushed her legs apart and knelt in between them, her lifted his hand and placed it softly on her wet cheek, her eyes moved quickly and met his. “Listen to me, I don’t think you are a whore, or any of the other things you said, you are a young, beautiful, sexy woman, do you want me to go on?” She shook her head. “ But I need to know some things.”

“Ok.”

“Did Matt force himself on you?”

“NO!! He wouldn’t do that!!” she shouted back, shocked by his question, she began to cry hysterically, Jeff didn’t comfort her, he needed answers.

“Do you wish you had never had sex with him?”

“Not at the time, but it has changed everything now, but No, I don’t regret it.” She managed to get out in between out bursts of tears; Jeff still made no effort to comfort her.

“Do you want his baby?”

“I don’t know, I don’t know what I want.” She said as she continued to cry and then she dropped her head into her hands, her hair dropped by the side of her face, covering it so Jeff couldn’t see her.

“Do you want him?”

“NO. I don’t know, please stop this Jeff, Please.” She begged him as she continued to cry uncomforted.

“Do you love him?”

“Yes” she got out as she lifted her head and met Jeff’s eyes. She couldn’t see his emotion through the blurriness of her own.

“Do you love me?”

“Yes.” She cried out as she dropped off the edge of the sofa and knelt in front of Jeff. “I love you more than anything. I want to be with you, and I don’t want to lose you.” She again let her eye’s drop from his.

“That’s all I wanted to hear.” He then tried to put his arms around her and pull her to him, but she moved to the side and got to her feet, she walked over to the far wall and lent up against it, then letting herself fall to the floor, she began to cry even more hysterically before Jeff walked on his knees over to her. He went to comfort her again, but, she threw her arms at him trying to get him to back off from her but this time he wasn’t going to let her win, he struggled against her arms. Chloe wasn’t thinking about what she was doing, she couldn’t think.

After struggling more Jeff grabbed both of her arms in his hands and pulled on them, making her body pull away from the wall, he moved closer to her, still holding her arms firmly, he knew that she couldn’t be thinking straight, he wasn’t either, he wanted to hold her near him, he never wanted to see her in pain again. Chloe seemed to give up struggling but her crying became louder and more intense, he let go of her arms and placed his own around her shaking body. As he pulled her closer to him, he could feel her heart beating faster and faster. She let herself cry onto Jeff’s chest, she didn’t have the energy to lift her arms and put them around him. He moved his arms gently up and down her back, trying to calm her. She was still shaking as he continued to move one hand over her back whilst the other ran through her tangled hair, he massaged her scalp and he realised that she had began to calm down. He moved both of his hands down to her waist and held her tightly again.

He eventually began to stand up, as he got to his feet he bent down and lifted Chloe to her feet, he then carried her to the bed and laid her on it, he pulled the covers over her, neither of them was undressed, but he walked around to the other side of the bed and got under the covers, he quickly moved over to where Chloe lay, he moved her into his arms and held her tightly. Her crying had stopped but she still sobbed from time to time, she tried to relax in his arms as he ran one hand lightly over the top of her hair. He kept doing that until he knew that she was sound asleep, he lifted his head slightly and looked over at the digital alarm clock, it read 5:17, he quickly laid his head on the pillow and fell asleep with Chloe still held tightly in his arms.
