Chapter 8

"We have a baby boy." Jeff muttered several times in amazement.  The doctor left the room.  Kim came and knelt before Jeff.  "Jeff, I'm really not suppose to do this, but I think you should be prepared.  Jami's my friend, so I'll be honest and upfront with you.  Your baby's condition is very serious. He...he probably won't survive the night.  I'm sorry."  Kim whispered.

Jeff's green eyes looked into her sympathetic brown ones and he knew she was telling the truth.  "no....no...." Jeff shook his head, his heart fighting what his head knew was true.  "I'm sorry Jeff, I really am."  Kim said, starting to stand up.

Jeff reached out and grabbed her hand, "What about Jami?" he asked.  Kim knelt back down in front of him.  "The next seventy-two hours will be critical.  But it looks like she will recover fully.  Luckily she was incredibly healthy.  Which will help her recover faster.  Right now she is still unconcious.  We are hoping that she'll wake up within the next few hours.  I'll let you know as soon as anything changes, okay?"  Kim asked.

Jeff nodded, "Can I see my baby?"  Kim bit her bottom lip, "I'll talk to the doctor and see what I can do." she said before leaving the room to find the doctor.

Jeff stared quietly past the glass covering his son.  He reached out and placed his fingertips on the glass.  He watched as the tiny body struggled to breathe.  Jeff closed his eyes against the image and sent up an earnest prayer.  He prayed for God to help his baby, but if he wasn't meant to live, to just end his suffering.

Jeff's breath caught in his throat as he heard the heart monitor hooked up to his baby start to whine.  Jeff quickly leaned down and kissed the glass, whispering, "Your mom and I love you very much.  We'll meet you in heaven, Joshua Moore Hardy."

Then as doctors and nurses pulled him back, he turned and walked out of the room, tears falling down his cheeks.  Outside the room he ran into Tasha and Lita.  Without a word they engulfed him in a hug as he cried.
