Chapter 20

Jeff reached the arena where SMACKDOWN was to be held that night.  He hadn't heard anything from Jami since she had called him two days ago.  Traci had stayed at the house in case Jami showed up there.

As Jeff walked through the backstage area he could see the other wrestlers watching him with pity.  He didn't even care anymore.  He just wanted to get into the ring and forget for awhile.  Forget everything for fifteen minutes.

He reached the locker room and dragged himself inside.  Matt sat on a bench inside, reading over a piece of paper.  "Hey man.  How ya doin'?"  Matt asked, jumping up to give Jeff a hug.  Jeff shrugged.  "I'm just glad to be back at work." "Have you heard anything from her?"  Matt asked.

"Nope.  Nothing.  Part of me wishes I hadn't gotten so angry at her, but at the same time, it's what I had to do.  It was the only way to get to her.  Anyways, I don't want to talk about it.  I want to focus on tonight's match with Christian.  What are you reading?"  Jeff asked.

"Oh....nothing."  Matt said, folding the paper.  Jeff looked at him suspiciously.  "Come on Matt, out with it."  "It's a note for Jami, from Stacy Keibler.  It says she's challenging Jami, Tasha, and Lita to a triple tag team match against herself, Jaded and Angel....but not just any match.  A bra and panties match....at Summerslam.  She sent Lita and Tasha a similiar note."  Matt told him.

"There is no way they are going to go for that!"  Jeff laughed.  Matt shrugged, "I guess we'll see."

Jeff's match against Christian went pretty well.  Jeff's knee was giving him some trouble, and Christian was focusing on it.  Christian brought in a chair to use on Jeff's knee, but before he could, Edge came running out to stop him.  Amethyzt ran out right behind him with a chair of her own.

Christian quickly ran out of the ring and up the ramp.  A few moments later Tasha and Edge helped Jeff limp to the backstage area.  He knew the trainer would want to look at his knee, but he just wanted to get back to his locker room first.

When he finally limped inside, he sat on a bench and slowly stretched his knee out, grimacing.  He went to reach into his gym bag for a wrap to put on it, but his hand brushed across something else first.  He pulled out a single white envelope.  He stared at it for a moment before Edge asked if he was okay.

"It's from Jami." Jeff stated numbly.  "How do you know?  There's no markings on it."  Tasha pointed out.  "I just do." he told her as he carefully pulled out a piece of heavy paper, folded in half.

He sighed a deep, hopeful sigh before he opened it.  Edge and Tasha slowly watched his eyes travel across the words.  After a moment he sat back, stunned.  Then he handed the letter to Tasha just as Matt and Lita entered the room.  "It's a note from Jami. Read it out loud, it'll save time."  Jeff instructed.

'Jeff, I've started this letter a billion times, but...I can't start it off right.  I've already screw'd things up so badly.  I'm surpised you are even willing to read what I've wrote.  Jeff, I'm so sorry.  I never wanted to hurt you.  I love you more than I do my own life.  But, I ran because I knew if I let you help me like I know you would have, you'd have made me feel good about myself again.  And I don't deserve that.  I put our baby at risk, not you.  I'm punishing myself because you wouldn't have.  But Jeff...I'm willing to TRY and work on it.  Remember, I never make a promise I can't keep, but I promise I'll try.  I love you and want to be with you.  I've driven two nights straight to finally catch up with y'all...so that's why you haven't seen me...I've been sleeping.  But Jeff, if you can forgive me, I"ll be at the same hotel y'all are in...301.  And please, relay this message on to all my other friends who are probably reading this too.  If you can forgive me please come to my room.  My sister is here with me now too.  I love you all, and if you can't forgive me, then I'll understand.  I can't forgive myself either. ~Jami~

Tasha read outloud.  "Well?"  Edge asked the group.  Everyone's eyes turned toward Jeff.  "You guys need to make up your own minds.  I have my decision made.  And no, I"m not telling you what it is.  I'll see you later."  Jeff said, before leaving.
