This quantity represents the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. If the length of the diameter of a circle is multiplied by pi, the length of the circumfrence is found. Mordern computers have worked out its value to 10,000 places. Ferdinand Lindemann, using Hermite's methods, proved that pi was transcendental in 1882.
