Two years after the Hero of Time returns to his time, Leer has joined Alabaster in his duties as the Royal Family messenger.
Jin lies in Hyrule Field. The wind blows softly across the grass. “It’s so boring…I know peace is good an all but….” She sits up. A gleam in the sky catches her eye.
A rock of some sort shoots across the sky and crashes somewhere nearby. “What the heck was that?” She jumps to her feet and goes to investigate.
A large crater scars the plains. A blue light emits from within it. Jin jumps down into the hole and walks towards the blue glow. Inside a blue sphere, a little girl sleeps curled up. “A kid?” Jin puts her hand on the sphere and it melts away. The girl floats for a few seconds before gently landing on the ground.
Leer walks out from the castle. “Man, I finally get a break…Though I can’t say the same for Alabaster.” His eyes scan the Grounds and he spots Jin coming his way, carrying something. “Leer! Hey, Leer!!” Jin explains to him how she found the little girl. “..And I was sorta wonderin’ if you could keep an eye on her while I go try to figure out where she came from.” Leer sighs hard. “Oh yeah. You’re not too good with kids. Alright, but I dunno how long I’m gonna be on-” “Thanks Leer!” Jin hands him the girl and runs off. He narrows his eyes. “Thanks for nothin’!”
Leer leans the girl up against a tree. “Man, I don’t know anything about watching little kids. I shouldn’t have agreed to this.”
An hour passes and the girl opens her eyes. “Wh-where am I?….” She hugs her knees to her chest and shivers. “This isn’t home….” A scream rattles her skull and she clutches her knees closer. “Pain…lots of pain…”
Leer glances down from the tree. “Oh, she’s awake.” He jumps down. The girl pushes herself as close as she can get to the tree. “Who are you?…” “It’s ok. I’m not going to hurt ya. My name’s Leer….What’s yours?…” She thinks hard for a moment. “Um…I think it’s Shard…”
An image of dead bodies and flames flashes across her eyes. Screaming, pain, more screaming. She starts crying. “No…No more pain…Please…stop!!!” Leer tries to figure out how to calm her down. “It’s ok….Um…There’s no one who’s going to cause you any harm.”
Jin suddenly shoves Leer aside. “Look at that, Leer! Ya made the kid cry.” He sits up. “I didn’t do anything! She started screaming on her own.” “Yeah, yeah.” Jin kneels by Shard and puts her hand on her shoulder. “Hey…calm down.” Shard looks up at Jin. “Who are *hiccup* you?…” “I’m Jin. I’m this idiot’s sister.” “I’M NOT AN IDIOT!!!!”
Two days passed by. Leer kept an eye on Shard and Jin searched around the crater for any clues on how she came here. The girl seemed to have trouble with her memory. She couldn’t remember much and what she did remember was a war scene.
Shard had grown very attached to Leer and Jin. She met Alabaster only once.
After about a week Leer and Jin began to notice that Shard was growing at an incredible pace. When they first found her she looked to be about five now she appeared to be eight.
Jin and Shard walk through the castle. Today, was tour of the castle day for her. “Jin? Why’d Leer go away?” “He’s a messenger so he’s really busy most of time.” “Oh….What’s a messenger?” “A person who delivers important stuff.”
Throughout the day the girl would keep asking questions about Leer. “Ya know, Shard. If I didn’t know any better I’d say you like Leer a lot.” “I do!” Jin stops and looks at her. “It was a joke, kiddo.” “What’s a joke?” “Something that’s funny.” “Oh…”
Eventually Shard started exploring on her own.
Shard wanders around the Market. “I’m gonna get something for Jin and Leer. What was that thing I needed?…Oh! Rupees!” She looks around for anything that looked like a ‘Rupees’. After an unsuccessful search she gives up and goes out into the field. “I think Leer told me not to go out here alone….” She shrugs and is about to go inside when a group of Poes surround her. “A human! We finally can feast on that delicious soul!”
Shard backs away. “I don’t taste good.” The Poes edge closer and slowly begin to suck away the living soul. She falls onto the ground and hears distant yelling, someone picking her up, and moving.
Leer and Jin stand around the cold body of Shard in the castle. The color comes back to her face and she opens her eyes. “Jin?……Leer?….” Jin steps forward. “Ok, kid! What did Leer tell ya about goin’ off in the field? That place is dangerous for unprotected little kids.”
Shard sniffs. “I’m sorry. I was just curious….” Jin and Leer look at each other and then leave her.
The next day Shard went out to the Grounds. It was like she was the princess and wasn’t allowed out anywhere. “This is unfair.” She stares at the grass for a moment. “I’m gonna show that I’m no baby.” She gets up and heads to the field.
She spent most of the day hiding from guards and people. By the time she was on the field the sun was setting. Screaming feels her ears again and she clutches her head. A group of Stalchilds edge closer to her. “Huh?” She glances around feeling something draw nearer.”
Skeleton arms shoot out of the ground and grab her legs. She shrieks and tries to break their grip. “Lemme go!” More skeletons pop out of the ground and limp towards her. “Leer!! Jin!! Help me!!!” Something was filling up inside her. She could hear a voice calling out to her. She understands and stands perfectly still. Her body glows bright blue and it grows.
In a matter of seconds a girl the age of thirteen stands there. In her hand a staff, shaped like a sickle at the end, glows radiantly. “Be gone!” The sphere on the sickle shines and the Stalchilds blow up. “I did it…” She smiles weakly and collapses to the ground.
