Unknown Walkthrough

The beginning

First off, you start with the boy. Name him whatever you want. You get 6 spaces. He's called Randi I think. I'll call him that throughout the walkthrough. After this comes the intro story about the past. After the story it shows a scene with Randi on top of a log. Also there are Elliott and Timothy. You talk for a little bit and then Randi falls off the log. Elliott and Timothy run off.

The falls

Once you fall off the log, you are in some creek. Here, you run down and out, go on the small bridge and in the gap between the hedges and tree. Randi looks at the hedges and says he needs something to cut through. Go into the other creek and get the sword in the stump. A lot of bright lights start going on and off here. Once you get the sword, you have revived the monsters. Go cut through the bushes now and go back to Potos Village.

Forest to Potos

Once you go into the forest, you see a rabite there. Kill these and try to get level 3 before you go back to the village. It may take a while since rabites only give 1 EXP point. If you get to level 3, your weapon skill will go up to level 1 here. You can't get anymore of this until you get sword orbs.

Potos Village

In the village, you should buy a bandana. It offers low protection, but better than nothing. In the top right part of the village are the elder, Timothy, and Elliott. Walk over to them and they will see the sword you pulled, which is the Mana Sword. They soon realize that this is why the monsters revived and Elliott attacks you. He doesn't cause any damage though. He walks after you to about the center of town. Once you are here, an earthquake happens and a small hole appears. Elliott falls in first, then you do.

In the hole

In the hole is the first boss: The Mantis Ant. It's pretty easy to beat though. Just keep attacking at it. If you go to 0 hit points, you won't die. A guy who later says his name is Jema helps you. After you beat the Mantis Ant you get a sword's orb. Jema pulls you up after the fight.

After the fight

Elliott runs off and Jema talks to you and tells you about the sword and how it needs to be re-energized. He tells you to come to the Water Palace too. Timothy tells you to come to the elder's house, which you have to do. When you go in there you get banished from the village. Go into the basement of the house and get the 50 gold down there. Leave the village after that.

Outside the village

There are 2 ways to go to the Water Palace: You can walk to it, or go to Cannon Travel center, which is to the right of the rabite outside of the village. You travel for free the first time, but not again after that. It's probably better to go in the cannon.

The Water Palace

Whichever way you go, you will see 4 soldiers and their captain who is the blond haired one. The captain is Dyluck. (He's actually Major Dyluck). Anyway, after talking to them they go off into the forest. You can't follow them. Go into the Water Palace now. Jema is outside and just says "Follow me." Walk to the top of the palace. There are some switches on the floor which make stairs appear. When you get to the end, you will talk to the teal haired girl. Her name is Luka. Both Jema and Luka tell you about the past and of the Mana Fortress. Jema leaves for Pandora and Luka talks to you for a while. After this, you walk up on the stair to the seed at the top. All this is automatic. The seed rises up and spins for a little bit, then descends back to where it was. You gain the power of the seed. There are 7 other palaces with seeds in them which give you power as well. Luka also gives you a spear and tells you to go to Gaia's Navel.

After the Water Palace

Once you get done in the palace, you can go to Gaia's Navel 2 ways: Walk south, through Pandora, and then northwest. Or you can go to the cannon man again. No matter what you do, you get attacked by goblins who take you to their village. You are their to-be supper. The girl comes and saves you though. After this, she runs off and you should go to Gaia's Navel.

Gaia's Navel

If you take the cannon, just walk into the creek and into the left waterfall. In here are some tougher monsters for the low leveled. Kid goblins give about 6 EXP. You should get to level 5 here and raise the spear to level 1. There are skull switches in the cave which you need to throw in order to get to some places. Also, make sure to get the Magic Rope in the cave. At the end is the village of dwarves.

The Village of Dwarves

There are 2 things you need to do here. First, go to Watts' shop and have him forge the sword into the broad sword. If you want, you can leave and get the sword to level 2. The other thing you need to do is watch the show featuring the sprite. It costs 50 gold and then you have to give 100 gold. There's no way around this. After doing this, go to the other room and talk to the dwarf elder. He repays your money and after you leave his part of the village, another earthquake occurs.

Battle with Tropicallo

The boss is called Tropicallo. You have to swing over the spiked stones to hit him. Use the broad sword here. There's also another stupid plant that comes up from time to time called a brambler. Ignore it, since it doesn't do anything. Tropicallo throws pumpkin bombs at you. It's hard to dodge these. You can die on this boss though, but it's unlikely that you will. You get a spear orb from Tropicallo.

Aftermath of the battle

The elder and sprite thank you for beating Tropicallo and the elder gives you a bow. The sprite joins you too. He has a boomerang. The elder says that Watts is looking for you. The village goes back to normal and you should go to Watts' shop. He says that he made an axe, but it's no good. Randi touches it and it gets power. He sells it to you for 100 gold and you do need it. He then gives you a shortcut out of the village. Now you can forge the spear to the heavy spear. If you have the money, buy spikey suits for Randi and the sprite. The girl can't wear them, so don't get one for her.

Haunted Forest

Raise the sprite some levels and head to the forest. It's at the top of Gaia's Navel. There are guys with bows in here which can beat up the sprite easily. Try to run around them. There's a circular teleport pad which takes you to a fight with 2 werewolves. These guys are a little hard, but just stick to 1 then kill the other. The girl will now join you. You also get the spike knuckle, which is a glove weapon.

Elinee's Castle

The rest of the Haunted Forest is pretty straight forward. When you get to the castle, you need to go right instead of the entrance. Inside there are switches you need to throw. When you reach the part where there's no bridge, go down to the dungeon. Talk to a soldier by the gate and the doors open. He'll tell you that 3 people need to stand on the switch. You can also talk to Neko and save if you want. Now you extend a bridge and go through the door.

Elinee's chamber

Kill the 2 polter chairs on the stairs and go up. Elinee runs into the back room. Follow her. She sends Dyluck to Thanatos. After this, you fight the Spikey Tiger. In my opinion, this is THE worst boss in the game. Whenever he jumps on a side platform, you can only hit with the chobin bow. And most of the time it doesn't work. The fire breath is a really cheap attack. When you beat the tiger, go out of the room. Talk to Elinee and she turns into an elderly lady. 2 treasure chest appear on the right. One has gold, the other has a whip. Talk to Elinee again if you want to be teleported outside. Luka asks you to return to the Water Palace from here.

Return to the Water Palace

Luka tells you to go to the cave east of the Water Palace. There are iffish here. These things can really hurt your group. Try to rush into the cave. Inside are 3 more iffish. When you get past these, go into the back. There's an egg here. It hatches and a tonpole comes out. This thing is easy to kill. When you do it wiggles around and turns into a biting lizard. Try to stay at an angle and swing your sword. Don't let it eat someone, otherwise they take lots of damage. The lizard will cast cure water on itself for a while. When you beat it, another entrance appears. Go here and you'll see Undine. She gives you water magic and the pole dart, which is a javelin type weapon. After this, you can cast water magic. Raise your casting level to 1. You can't go any higher than that now. The iffish are good to use it on. They give about 15 EXP. You can go back to Luka and get magic points back for free too.

The Underground Palace

Now that you have Undine's powers, you can go here finally. Cast Freeze on the crystal orb and the lava goes away. There are switches in here as well. You have to use the whip when you see 2 posts that are 1 space apart on gaps. Whip the opposite post and you go across. At the end, you must have the sprite alive. The gnome is here and after he babbles about nothing, the Fire Gigas comes out. This boss is weak against Undine's magic. Cast freeze for the most damage. If you have a Faerie Walnut, use it if you run out of MP. This boss is very easy with Freeze lvl. 1. After beating it, go to the back room.

The gnome

In the back room, the gnome is on a stair thing with a seed, similar to the Water Palace's one. He'll give you his powers and you can get the seed's power. With this, you can raise both magics to level 2. Every seed that you get gives you the ability to raise magics to a higher level. 8 is the highest.

Pandora

Raise both magics to level 2 and go to Pandora. Talk to the girl named Phanna. She has turquoise hair and is usually at the southern part of the town. She disappears and is at the ruins to the south. Go to the ruins and talk to her there. She goes in and the girl will make the guards go away.

The ruins

You can fight the monsters, but I usually run through the ruins. When you get to the big room, there is a central platform and Thanatos is up there. He's an evil sorcerer who drains the peoples energy. He shows you Phanna and then Dyluck. After this he opens a trap door and you fight the Wall Face. Use Earth Slide lvl. 2 on the central eye. Don't kill the chamber's eyes, because if you kill them both the Wall face moves forward and can push you onto the spikes. Once you beat the central eye, the whole thing dies. You then go back up to the big room and Thanatos flees and people retur to normal. Talk to Jema and you get teleported outside.

Pandora revived

You should go to the king's castle from here. Inside he lets you into the treasure room and there is a sword and spear orb in there. You now go to the dwarf village. You should get your sword and spear forged by Watts too.

The village of dwarves

After visiting Watts, there's a hole in the middle of the village. The Scorpion Army has stolen the water seed. When you go in the hole there's a whip orb on the ship. In the back room they walk off with the seed and after that you fight a robot called Kilroy. It goes out of control for some reason. After you beat Kilroy, you get the seed back and need to return it to the water palace.

The water palace

When you return, there are some monsters outside and in. At the seed's altar, some imperial members are there. The leader is a green haired man named Geshtar. He asks you to give him the seed for Luka's life. It doesn't matter what you do, you end up fighting the Jabberwocky. This thing seemed to be weak against Earth Slide, but bring faerie walnuts to revive MP. After you beat it, you can go to the Upperland Forest, which is where the sprite lives. You go via the cannon travel man just south of Potos Village.

The Upperland

You land in a wintery forest. Talk to a moogle and go to their village in the summer-looking forest. There are 3 pebblers there. These aren't hard to beat. When you beat them, the moogles return to the village. Neko and Watts travel around a lot to places where you go in the game. You can save with Neko, which is usually useful. 2 orbs are in the village too. Talk to a moogle and the sprite remembers everything. He says: "Walk the seasons, spring to winter, spring again, and we can enter." What this means is that you go to the spring forest, then summer, then autumn, then winter, and back to spring. It's a coutnerclockwise walk. The first time I did it, I could never find where the opening appeared. It's in the northeast of the spring forest.

The sprite's village

The village is not really his, but I don't know what else to call it. The village is ruins and you hear a sound from the back. When you go there, a creature with really long legs and a bird's head is there. This is the Spring Beak. Use Earth Slide, since you can almost never hit with weapons. Spring Beak jumps around a lot. When you beat it, the trees clear out in the back and you go to the Wind Palace.

The Wind Palace

You can talk to the old man first or get the seed's energy first. It doesn't matter. The old man is the sprite's grandfather. He summons Sylphid and you gain Sylphid's powers, which are wind. You can get hitpoints back with him, just like Luka. After this, use Air Blast on the crystal orb, just southwest of the spring forest.

Matango

After you walk through the forest and get to this town, you find a castle and meet King Truffle. He tells you about a white dragon who lives in a cave behind the village. He also says there's something upstairs for you. It's just a javelin's orb. You should raise all magics to level 3. Watts is in the castle as well.

The white dragon's cave

Many monsters in the cave. You should equip Randi with the spear or sword, the girl with the axe, and the sprite with the whip. This way you don't need to switch back and forth a great deal. There's a crystal orb in the cave which you use Earth Slide on. It makes rocks fall somewhere. This makes a bridge to go out on the north side. You're outside again and there's a large snake. This boss is weak against lightning bolt spells. Very weak. After you beat it, go to the area in the back and in this small cave is the white dragon. This on is small, but you soon figure out that it's parents were probably beaten by the serpent. You take it back to Truffle and he raises it. There's also a new cannon travel area in the forest that will take you to Kakarra. DON'T go to the Ice Country.

Kakarra Desert

I have never figured out which way it is to get to the sandship. Just walk around and it eventually happens.

The Sandship

When you go aboard, all 3 of you are taken prisoner. Randi is alone in some area. Talk to Sergo twice. Then talk to the guards at the door. Go out and find the sprite. It turns out he eats all the ship's food. The 2 people in the room want you to get him out of there. He joins you and you now go to Morrie's quarters. The sprite takes care of the guards from here. Inside Morrie is with the girl. She hates him and joins you. Meria, Morrie's father I think, comes in and 2 other guards come in. The ship shakes and Morrie knows that it's the Empire. They surrender. At the top of the ship, Geshtar is there. Now you fight him and his Mech Rider. It's only 1 thing though, the Mech Rider is what it's called. Use lightning bolt for adequate damage. He runs away after being beaten. Now you're in the desert again. One guard asks if you're leaving. Say "Yes" and you go out to another area of the desert. Go north from here to reach the town of Kakarra.

Kakarra

This town's wells have run dry, so they are out of water. It's said that the fire seed in the fire palace was taken away too. There are some shops here, so you can get better armor, etc. Now you need to go to the Ice Country to get Salamando's powers. Because you can't get through the Fire Palace without them.

Todo Village

You end up here when you go to the Ice Country. Watts is here too.

Frosty Forest

The Frosty Forest has many howlers. Use the sprite's spear on them to make them spaced out. These are good for magic XP later in the game, but make your way to the tropical village.

Tropical village

Before you get here, you fight the boreal face, an ice creature similar to tropicallo. Analyzer says it fear Salamando. I've cheated before and it wasn't weak against that at all. But use Earth Slide on it for adequate damage. After you beat it, you get to the village. The Scorpion Army is in this village. Go to the stove in the middle. The guy asks you to watch it. Talk to the stove. A tapping noise comes from it. Choose to open it and Salamando comes out. He gives you his powers.

The Ice Palace

Power up Salamando to lvl. 3 and go to the Ice Palace. When you enter, go right and up. Hit that switch to proceed. Go up the stairs. Keep going through. You'll eventually reach a library. At the back of it are 2 switches. Walk on them and a trap door opens. You're in a room with 3 tonpoles. Use Salamando's magic after making them biting lizards. Don't waste it on the tonpoles. These are the same as before, but just 3 instead of 1. After this is a big room which needs the whip. Then a teleporter and finally the throne room. A voice says, "Be gone!" When it asks, "Well?" say "No." This leads into a battle with the Frost Gigas. Use Salamando's magic to beat it. It turns into none other than Santa. He gives you the fire seed and says to go return it to the Fire Palace.

The Fire Palace

Return to Kakarra and then to the Fire Palace. In the big flame room, use exploder on the orb. That makes the flames go away. There's another orb that requires fireball. It extends a bridge. In the big room with torches lined about, use freeze. It puts them all out except for 2. Walk between the 2 and the middle thing turns into stairwell. Down there is the Minotaur. Use Sylphid's magic on it to easily win. Go to the seed room and hold up the sword. You can now raise all magics to level 4.

Kakarra

The water isn't back yet. The elder says that they need a sea hare's tail for it to return. You can get this later in the game. Now at the cannon travel you have 3 places to go: Ice Country, Upperland, and the Empire. Go to the Empire.

Southtown

This is a small town. Go to the west and find Mara. She's the one who runs into the house. Go in and talk. She tells you about her husband being a spy and the secret # which is 634. Go east and tell the guard that number. You take the sewers to get to Northtown.

Northtown

Nothing that special in the sewers. When you arrive you meet Krissie and she tells you about Dyluck draining energy like Thanatos in Pandora. And it takes place in yet another ruins. Get some armor here and rest up. Have Watts forge weapons if you can afford it.

Northtown ruins

Pretty similar to Pandora's ruins. Even the background music. Phanna is on the steps, but this time the girl hits her. Krissie takes her to the town's doctor, leaving the ruins to you. It starts to get a little mazey in here. You have to find certain switches that lower spikes and create doors. They aren't hard to find though. Don't forget about the treasure chests outside. They are weapon orbs. When you get to the Doom's Wall, use Earth Slide lvl. 4 on it, just like the Wall Face. Ignore the Doom Eyes. They die with the wall. If you kill the eyes, then the wall does a cheap stone attack. I think it's called Cave-in. After the wall comes that big room again. Dyluck is at the top of the central platform. Talk to him. He drains the girl, but Randi hits him and he comes to his senses, but it paralyzed. Go to the back door. Thanatos is here. The girl gets energy from Dyluck and Thanatos flees, but summons a vampire. I found Sylphid's magic to work the best. Once you beat it, return to Northtown and find Krissie.

Vandale's Castle

Krissie tells you that the emperor wants a truce and asks you to come to his castle. They leave first. Go to the castle. The guards just say: "Welcome. The emperor awaits you." When you reach the room with a big table, talk to the emperor. He takes you prisoner and you realize it was all a sham. Talk to the guard over the prison bars. He lets you out and pushes you into the pit. Down here is the Metal Mantis, just like the Mantis Ant at the beginning. I found any magic works all right on it. A teleporter appears when you win. For the rest of the castle, look for switches and those yellow, jumper things. When you finally make it to the end, the emperor is there along with Sheex (purple), Fanha (red), and Geshtar (green, but you already have seen him). Geshtar asks for one more chance. You fight the Mech Rider yet again. Use the same methods as before to beat it. After you win he burns the castle up, but Truffle comes and saves you. He gives you the Flammie drum, which will summon Flammie whenever. This way you can fly around to places rather than paying cannon travel guys. You can't land in forests or water with Flammie, and you can't summon him indoors or in forests. From here you should head to the Lofty Mountains (biggest ones on the big continent). You should land in the town there called: Mandala.

Mandala

Buy magical armor here. The Dark Palace is that cave on the mountain near the town. That's where you should go now.

The Dark Palace

Hit all the switches in the palace to get access everywhere. At the near end, switches make blue flames come out on the pit. You can walk on this. The boss of the palace is the Lime Slime. Weak against Salamando's powers. It gradually shrinks when getting weaker. Shade gives you his powers and you get a 5th seed. Raise all powers to level 5. Don't explore the mountain yet. Go to the Gold Isle.

The Gold Isle

This is west of Kakarra I believe. It's a decent size island with a town on it. Go to the top of the town where the stairs are, go around that walkway and talk to the old man. Return to Southtown and get the key from Mara. This is so you can get into the Golden Tower. Stock up on goods.

The Golden Tower

Get the spear orb and forge it. You can knock enemies unconscious with the new forge. When you climb the stairs, a boss is there. This one is like the Spikey Tiger, but it's the Blue Spike. I found Earth Magic to do good damage to it. When it's almost dead, it looks like it is, but comes back and never uses and magics. Beat it and go up and through to the next boss. This one is the Gorgon Bull. Sylphid's magic beats it easily. After this, a last staircase appears. This one takes you to the 6th seed. Lumina gives you her powers here too. Go back to the desert.

The desert and moon palace

Land near the black, circle area. Go north and onto Keron's ferry. He takes you to the Moon Palace for free.

The Moon Palace

In the space room, look around for the crystal orb. Use Lucent Beam on it. You are teleported to a back room and get Luna's powers and the 7th seed. (That was easy, wasn't it?) Ride Keron's ferry back down and head to Tasnica.

Tasnica

This is a castle around the Empire's island. You can't get in earlier in the game, but can now. Go to the king's room and he turns into a dark stalker. Use Lucent Beam on it and talk to the king. Jema comes and tells you to NOW go to see Sage Joch and learn what true courage is. His cave is the one at the top of the Lofty Mountains.

Sage Joch's cave

A fish man is here. He claims to be Jekh. He says that Joch will see you. Talk to Joch and accept the test. Run past all the monsters in the test area until you get to the end. At the end you fight level 99 versions of yourselves. Don't worry, they don't do all that much damage. Moon Energy is useful for whacking them to bits. You don't have to use the weapons they are using. In fact, I almost never use the gloves or boomerang at all in the game! You can't run from the battle site either. After you beat them, Jekh says that he's Joch and tells you to go to the Tree Palace on that purple continent. He gives you full life too.

The Tree Palace

It doesn't look much like it's name at all. When you enter, Sheex fights you in the form of the Aegagroplin. Use Earth Slide and Dispel the Wall he puts up. Use Magic Absorb too. When you beat him, go to the seed room. The seal doesn't make it and Dryad comes and gives you his powers. He says that Thanatos sealed his "Mana Magic". You get that spell at the very end of the game. The sunken continent arises and it's now a giant palace with an underground city. Land at the palace (It doesn't matter where you land, you always land at the same place). Go down into the creek and down the stairs. This is the underground city.

The Underground city

You'll need the axe here to chop down the reefs. On the waterfalls, hold the UP button so you don't go as fast. Hit the red switches to make them go away. When you get the the prison gate you fight the Hydra. Use Salamando's magic on it. Fanha, the emperor, and some soldier come. They say a bunch of nothing and leave. From here you are in a large building. About midway, there's a place you can go in. It's a small base. Watts is here, Krissie restores HP but not MP if you talk to her. A soldier tells you a secret code: Red, blue, yellow, green. You use this later. There are lots of floor switches and a lot of running around in this area. When you finally get to the room with walls that have color things that glow on them, attack them in this order: red, blue, yellow, green. (Sound familiar?) This opens up another way and you soon fight a silver robot called Kettle Kin. Use Earth Magic on it. After this you are finally out of this place. You can get into the Great Palace now. If you leave, you can easily go back to the palace, since the creek goes away and you can get in via the stairs down and the door.

The Great Palace

You need to use each elementals power on 1 orb here (Except Dryad). Here's a brief description of the rooms and what magics you use:
Green flame torches: Freeze
Orange flame torches: Earth Slide
Light green flame torches: Air Blast
Red floor and orange flame torches: Fire Ball
Blue flame torches: Dark Force
Light green flame torches, but later: Lucent Beam
Purple flame torches: Change Form
Once you get to the room with the switches, go to the purple torch room on the left side. Use Change Form on the orb. Go to the opposite side of the room and you can go through the door there. Once out, you fight the Snap Dragon. Use Salamando's powers and DON'T let it eat you. You take around 400 damage each time it does. Once you kill it, go to where the seed room was. The emperor is dead on the altar of the room. And there's a new back way there too. Fanha is there and he reverts to Hexas. I found Earth Slide to work well. When you beat him, go to the back and on the teleporter. A Mech Rider is there, but it's just a fighting machine made by Thanatos. If you power up your spear to a high level and have Moon Energy on, it can do around 600 damage. When you beat it Thanatos activates the Mana Fortress and the Great Palace sinks again. You get out and the flight scene changes to a purplish area with lightning and thunder striking now and then. Land back at the Tree Palace. Talk to Jema and he tells you of Pure Land. This is that big black volcano in the northwest corner. You can now land here.

Pure Land

Monsters can really hurt you if you don't have good armor like the vestguard and needle helm. You can take around 200 damage at a time. They give good XP though. Work through the forest and you soon fight another snake. Use Sylphid's powers on it. After this is dead and you reach an archway, someone tells you to beat the dragon to the left of this area to pass. You can save at these points. Go to the left. This is a snowy forest. The dragon is the Snow Dragon. Fire is obviously the best magic on it. When you beat it, you can go through the arch. This is how it is with the other dragons. Find the cave in the next area and at it's end, you fight the Axe Beak. You actually should use Undine's powers for a change. Beat it and find the Red Dragon. It's to the left of the arch as always. Yet again, use Undine's powers. Go through the arch, through the forest. In the area with stones in it, you fight the Thunder Gigas. Use Earth Slide on it. The last boss is the Blue Dragon which is also weak against Earth Slide. Go through the final arch. You are on a cliff and see the Mana Tree. The Mana Fortress comes and destroys the tree. The Tree talks to you and tells Randi that it's his mother and that the ghost at the Mana Sword is Serin, his father. You gain the power of the Tree Palace's seed finally and can power all magics to level 8. You can now enter the Mana Fortress.

The Mana Fortress

This is the final area of the game. It's not a big maze, but just has many monsters to fight. It's recommended to have Lumina's powers to level 8 and Shade's powers to level 8. Any others to at least 7. The 2 bosses of the palace are Buffy and the Dark Slime. For Buffy, use Lucent Beam. For the Dark Slime use Dark Force. At the very end of the palace there is the same platform you fought the 3rd Mech Rider on. Restore to full life and go to the right teleporter. Thanatos is here. He tries to take Dyluck's body, but doesn't make it. Dyluck is finished, but tells you about Thanatos before he dies. Thanatos becomes the Dark Lich. Use Lucent Beam on it. It's a pretty easy fight. After you beat him the seal on Dryad's Mana Magic is lifted. Now the Mana Fortress is under attack by the Mana Beast. You go outside and up to fight the beast. When it starts, Randi MUST equip the sword. Wait for the Mana Beast to fly overhead and shoot out the fire. Cast Defender on the group. If you're high enough level you won't take any damage. After the fire it flies at you. Now it descends down. Use Moon Energy on Randi to whack it. When it gets low enough, the girl and sprite must cast Mana Magic so you can attack the beast. If you don't beat it on the first try, it flies out at you, then it flies to the left and can damage you and it repeats it's first fire attack process. After you beat it, the sprite disappears because he used up his mana energy. I'll let you experience the end yourself.
