Falcon

Chapter One: Rude Awakening

Darkness above,
Emptiness below,
Vulture's scream,
And Raven's crow,

Dark sorcery,
Brings back the dead,
And suffering,
Begins to spread,

But then a light,
Shines from the sky,
And heard to all,
A Falcon's cry!

Ally awoke once again to the voices in her head. She breathed heavily and massaged her temples in confusion. What does this all mean, she thought to herself, the voices, the birds, the darkness...?

Her eyes, red and teary, peered out of her bedroom window. Dark and dreary, the sky didn't help her clear her thoughts. What do these dreams mean? A tear rolled off of her cheek and onto her bedsheets. Who's doing this to me? I don't understand it?

She recalled the first time she dreamt of the birds, the first time she heard the voices. It was only a year earlier. She woke up, drenched in sweat, and crying. It was a horrible night, and many others followed. The strange thing about the dream was that it only happened about once a month. And each night that it happened, it was very crummy outside.

Today was no exception, it actually appeared worse. The sky lit up with lightning and the ground shook with thunder. Water slapped the window as if trying to frighten Ally. If so, it was doing a good job. The wind outside cried with a passion, whistling shrilly and whipping against her house.

The wind accelerated and the thunder harshened. One boom shook her whole room like a rattle. She heard a strike of lightning and, to her dismay, saw a limb from a tree near her window plummet to the ground. She let out a piercing cry and pulled the bedcovers up to her face. And, all at once, the sky lit up and the window shattered. Shards of glass darted across her room and sliced into the wall near her head. One shard hurtled, almost purposely, straight for her head. Ally screamed and closed her eyes tightly.

When her eyes opened, all was calm. The wind had stopped, as did the lightning. And, extroardinarily, her window was untouched and intact. She almost smiled. It was just a dream, she thought. But that smile soon turned into a gasp.

Standing on the unbroken branch outside her window, a raven, black as death and as fierce looking, "cawed" loudly. And then it left as fast as it had come.

On that dark and dreary night, if you happened to pass Ally's house you might have heard, if you listened closely, the whimpers of a confused and frightened young girl.
