Gandalf

The one who has returned from fire and death.

This Istari (wizard), know as Gandalf to hobbits and humans, Mithrandir to the elves, and Tharkun to the dwarves, was, Olorin, a maia Spirit of the Undying Lands. The Great Powers of Arda, perceiving that great evil was rising in the Mortal Lands (Middle-Earth), sent Gandalf (Olorin) with four other Istari, to assist Middle-Earth in their war with Sauron. By Gandalf's Wisdom the Ring Bearer was led to Mordor and there the Ring of Sauron was destroyed and Sauron's evil drivin from that mortal world. Gandalf's instigation caused the downfall of Smaug, (the great dragon) and led to the victories of the Battle of Five Armies, the Battle of Helms Deep, and the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. Also, Gandalf single handedly defeated the Balrog of Moria (Durin's Bane). At the end of the Third age, all his deeds completed, Gandalf departed the lands of Middle-Earth and returned to the Undying Lands.
