others stay awhile, leaving hoofprints on our hearts

A Little About Joey...

Joey was born at Bayhead Oaks Stable in Dade City, Florida.  His first owner was Richard Howey who owned him off and on until he was fourteen.  He was originally a driving horse for Richard (who also started gaiting him as a colt) and his two other owners in Florida. When Joey was going on 14, he was purchased by Linda Webber of Hawkewood Stables in Florida (who was located at the time in New Hampshire) for Marianne Town & her family to use as an at home pleasure and trail horse. The Town family owned Joey for little over a year before I purchased him from them and turned him into the show horse he is today.

Joey has since been to shows in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, and Missouri. Some of his accomplishments include being the first Saddlebred (and so far the only) to win the New England Horseman's Council Jr. Stock Seat Equitation Medal Championship, carrying the American Flag in five flag presentations at horse shows and the opening act of the 2004 Pfizer Fantasia Musical Celebration of the Horse at Equine Affaire in Springfield, MA, and having gone all the way from Maine to Missouri to compete in the World Championships for hunter and western Saddlebreds (were Joey won his World Champion title). Joey has a mixed training background consisting of saddle seat, jumping, limited dressage, western pleasure, hunter pleasure, equitation, trail riding, natural horsemanship (Parelli Savvy & Monty Roberts "Join Up"), driving, and limited trick training (bowing, smiling, standing on boxes, walking up stairs, giving hugs & kisses). Because he is so well trained to leg and voice commands Joe can also be ridden bridleless.

Joey is a wonderful all around horse with an amazing, kind, and loving personality.  He loves being in the spot light and gives his best every time out.  Spending as much time as I have with this amazingly intelligent horse I have learned how wise he really is, Joey is a quick learner who is willing to please his rider (even if he's convinced that the tarp is going to eat him alive & the cow is an alien life form).  I can't have imagined ever owning such a wonderful horse.  He is truly one of a kind and deserves all the spoiling he gets.

For the past five years since retiring from the show ring Joey has been moving around the country with Jessie while being used for lessons at RMD Stables, Pine Haven Stables, and DeLovely Farm, Joey was sent home to Maine on April 27, 2010 to truly enjoy retirement under the care of Jessie's mom, Bonnie, while Jessie embarked on a new job in Kentucky. In the September Jessie went to Maine visit and spent two days enjoying trail rides and a photo shoot on the beach with Joey. Sadly just two months later Joey was unexpectedly laid to rest after a brief and sudden illness. In loving memory of the greatest show horse, teacher, and best friend I've ever known...WC Bayhead Spartan 4/27/1987 - 11/22/2010

Somewhere in time's own space
There must be some sweet pastured place
Where creeks sing on and tall trees grow
Some paradise where horses go
For by the love that guides my pen
I know great horses live again.
