Summer and Peter Chapter 2 The unicorn shook its head, its rainbow mane shaking violently. Her white coat glistened in the sunshine. For a moment, we just stood there, both amazed at the beauty of each other. I reached out to touch the mare's crystal horn. When I did this, I felt something very similar to that of static electricity. I quickly retrieved my hand. "Hello Summer," a soft, melodious voice said in my head. "How do you know my name?" I questioned the creature. "We know a great many things about you Summer. But time is of the essence. You must come with me quickly." "We? Who-" I started to ask. "No time of questioning now. Get on my back," she ordered me. I straddled her and held on tight to her mane. When she started to run, I shut my eyes tight. The wind felt cold against my bare arms and face. "My name is Aubrey. We are in desperate need of your help. I am just a messenger sent to get you, but I do know that the unicorn kingdom is in great danger." I just nodded my head in response. We continued the rest of the ride in silence. When we finally arrived, I opened my eyes to the most beautiful place you have ever seen. I cannot begin to describe the crystal water, blue skies, and green grass. It was as if colors were more than that. It was as if color were thought. Everything seemed to call out to me. The water wanted me to swim in it. The flowers wanted me to pick them. The skies wanted me to soar in them. It was pure bliss. It seemed as if I had known the place my whole life. "Welcome home, Summer." I jumped at the sound of Aubrey's voice. A few seconds later I noticed she'd said 'home'. "What do you mean 'Welcome home'?" I asked. "You will find out in due time." As she said this, I saw a sparkle in her green eyes. I went to one of the ponds, and looked at my reflection. My usually dull brown hair looked like the bark on a sapling. My pale blue eyes looked the color of the sky. My clothes had changed from a white shirt and jeans to a shirt full of rainbows in the sky and a pair of tan slacks. I looked up and saw Aubrey walking past all of the flowers and waterfalls. I followed her to the top of a hill and what I was was the complete opposite of what we had just passed. There was no color. The sky was stormy, the grass was a light grey, the flowers were all dead, and the water was black. Everything was deserted. "What's happened?! Everything looks so beautiful back there," I said. Aubrey sighed. "This is what is happening to our kingdom. It's being destroyed. I am just a commoner, but the queen will tell you more." With that, she turned away, her head hung low.

I walked through the palace doors and gasped. There was a dome, at least 20 feet above my head. Large pillars were around the edges of the dome. Everything was white, except for the floor, which was checkered with black and white. This must be a ballroom I thought. It looked exactly like those in fairy tales. Aubrey nudged me to continue walking. We walked through many corridors, passing more doors than I can count. We came to two giant wooden doors, and Aubrey came up beside me and put one of her front hoofs in a notch in the floor. The doors opened. Before us stood a room that was lined with gold. In the very center of the room, the most outstanding unicorn was sitting on a pile of cushions. Aubrey whispered to me, "The queen." The queen's horn was not made of crystal. It was made of gold! And her hoofs were gold as well. Her coat was the brightest shade of white you have ever seen. And her eyes. Oh, her eyes. They were the colors of the rainbow. All seven colors. "Good evening, Summer. How are you?" she softly said. "Hello. I'm fairly well. But I would still like to know why I am here," I told her. "I suppose you do have a right to. Come," she pointed to a pillow next to her, "sit down." I sat on the satin red pillow. "You have become more beautiful than I ever expected." A tear seemed to form in her eye. "What do you mean? I don't even know you." The queen sighed. "I was hoping you'd remember. Obviously you do not. I will tell you then. "When you were a baby, something terrible started to happen. We had to change you into a human. You see, you are my daughter." A tear rolled down her cheek. "I am not in the best of health, and as Aubrey probably showed you, our kingdom is in terrible danger. The color (that is what makes everything alive here) is vanishing! Some evil force is destroying our land, and so is destroying us. We need the colors to survive. As my daughter, and a princess, we had to call on you. You are our last hope." "You mean that I am a unicorn? Like yourself? And a royal one at that?" I asked. "Yes." "I would gladly take on the quest-" "Wonderful!" the queen exclaimed. "But... I have no idea where to begin my journey." "My scouts have ideas on what might be causing this. I'm afraid that I cannot turn you into a unicorn because if I did, you would die from going into that non-color place. You will have to go on foot. But, I do have someone else who is immune from the spell and may be able to help you along your way." The queen seemed to smile. "Peter! Please come here. I have a task for you." A very handsome man, maybe about 17 years old (only 2 years older than me), came out from a small door. His glistening green eyes and his blonde hair mesmerized me. "Yes, Your Highness?" he asked. His voice was like a summer's breeze passing through the leaves of a tree. "Summer has accepted the journey to help stop whatever may be causing the spell. I would like you to go with her and advise her of hazards in this world." "Of course." He smiled at me. "I'd be delighted to take on a quest with such a lovely lady." Peter came over to me, took my hand and kissed it. I blushed the deepest shade of red possible. "Now," the queen continued, "You may show her to her quarters for the night." She smiled and we left. "What is your name? I didn't catch it," Peter asked me. "Summer," I said. I was still embarrassed from the earlier events. "Summer," he echoed. "What a beautiful name." This made me blush again. "Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to embarrass you." "It's okay," I murmured. We were walking through a different corridor, one much closer to the queen's room. We had already passed maybe about ten doorways, when Peter stopped. "Here are your quarters for the night, Summer." He opened the door for me. I looked around the room. It was gorgeous. Pale yellow walls and a rose colored carpet. "Do you like it?" "It's lovely," I replied. Peter smiled at me. "If you need anything, you may ring that bell," he pointed to a desk next to the bed. "One of the unicorns will assist you." "Thank you," I said gently with a smile. Peter then closed the door and I was left alone. I sighed. I wish I were back home and in my fort, I thought to myself. I looked around the room more carefully. There were pink roses on the walls. To the left there was a bed. The comforter was patterned to match the walls. Yellow with pink roses. Next to the bed was a nightstand with a bell on top of it. Across from the bed, there was a dresser. I walked over to the dresser and opened it. There were the prettiest dresses in there. I looked in several other drawers, and saw some pajama's, under garments, slacks, and t-shirts. A mirror had been hung above the dresser. I once again looked at my reflection. Nothing. I could not see anything that might lead someone to believe that I am a unicorn. I opened the drawer with the pajamas. I took out a blue nightgown and put it on. It flowed down to my ankles. I found the bathroom, and I washed my face. I came back out, and lay down on the bed. It wasn't for a long while till I was able to get back to sleep. But finally, I fell into a slumber.
