Looking For Some Strange? Have Some…

By Ringa Sunn

This is not your typical space odyssey. Although it may be filled with starships, evil aliens and unfamiliar planets covered in red dust, Lexx is without a doubt unlike anything you’ve ever known. As a confirmed Lexxian (the name we extreme Lexx fans have given to each other), I’m used to getting blank looks and hearing, “Lexx? What’s that?” Well, brace yourselves because you are about to enter a parallel universe.

Lexx was originally a set of four movies called Tale From A Parallel Universe. They were aired in Germany and Canada (where Lexx is filmed), and on Showtime. The first movies got such good reviews that the Sci Fi Channel bought the show and has since produced two and a half seasons of Lexx.

The story behind Lexx is simple. It involves a dead assassin, a half cluster lizard, half-love slave, an ex-security guard class four, and a robot head with an attitude exploring the Dark Zone in an oversized flying, talking bug (The Lexx). See? I told you it was simple. Of course, the four crew members and their ship end up getting into more trouble than the average space dwellers.

Kai (Michael McManus), the assassin, has been dead for over 6,000 years. He is kept alive by special protoblood. Often referred to as “the last of the Brunnen-G”, Kai protects the crew with a scorpion claw attached to his wrist. When he’s not being frozen in his cryopod, that is. And since he’s dead, he has no emotions and can’t do normal human activities, like eating, sleeping, having sex, etc.

Speaking of sex, Xev (Xenia Seeberg) pretty much covers that aspect of the show. Once she was transformed into a love slave, her libido skyrocketed, thus providing excellent comedy value for the show. However, during her transformation, she was attacked by a cluster lizard (a rather large lizard that has a fetish for human brains). Now as well as being beautiful, Xev can be quite aggressive. Xev is also in a very much unrequited love with Kai. Persistent as well as stubborn, Xev brings Lexx a great female lead.

And then there’s Stan (Brian Downey). Stanley H. Tweedle, to be exact! Stan is my favorite character, although most girls go for Kai. I happen to prefer the scared and timid. Stan used to work for His Divine Shadow (bad guy #1) as a security guard before he accidentally obtained the key to the Lexx and stole it. As the key is in Stan’s hand, the Lexx only responds to him. Stan’s main priority seems to be sex as well, but Xev’s not having any of him. In fact, Stan is the only man that Xev doesn’t like. Stan is pretty calm and is quick to run from danger. Just don’t take his hat.

Lastly we have 790 (Jeffrey Hirshfield) , the robot head. Since a cluster lizard ate his body, he’s reduced to being carried or wheeling himself around on a little cart. He accidentally got some of Xev’s love slave treatment, and so he fell madly in love with Xev. And I do mean madly. Another comic genius of Lexx, 790 recites vivid love poems to Xev on a regular basis. Saving all his positive emotions for Xev, 790 hates Stan with a passion. He never ceases to proclaim it, either. Recently, when 790 had a slight mishap, Kai reassembled him. Kai was the first thing 790 saw, and then he fell madly in love with Kai instead.

Now that you all know the show, watch it and love it! Lexx airs on the Sci Fi Channel currently every Sunday night at 2:00 AM with reruns. January 18th is the scheduled date for the restarting of new episodes. They will then be shown on Friday nights at 10:00 PM and 1:00 AM. Unfortunately, this will be the last season of Lexx, so catch it while you can! A show like this only comes along once in a lifetime- no matter how long that may be!
