301. DRILL GENERAL:
- 1. It is on the parade square that the Recruit and Cadet first observe unit organization and chain of command. Here, the officer, warrant officer (WO), and non-commissioned officer (NCO) each has his/her own duties and functions to perform. An NCO cannot delegate their duties to a Cadet. If NCOs are to gain the respect due to them by virtue of their position, their word of command and individual drill performance must be of the highest standard.
- 2. The parade square provides an excellent medium for WOs and NCOs to display their initiative and aggressiveness, and to gain command experience.
- 3. Good drill, well rehearsed, closely supervised, and demanding the highest precision, is an exercise in obedience and alertness. It sets the standard for the execution of any duty, both for the individual and the unit, and builds a sense of confidence between commander and subordinate that is essential to high morale (esprit-de-corps).
- 4. The mental alertness, self control, and instinctive obedience developed on the parade square must be maintained in all phases of Cadets. It is the constant duty of those in command to insist on the same high standard both on and off the parade square, because these qualities are an important part of Cadets, be it flying, teaching or on exercise. The systematic correction of minor errors tends to strengthen these characteristics and improve both individual and unit standards.
- 5. Drill for the Cadets is supposed to be fun at times while it increases their coordination, mental alertness, self control, obedience, self discipline and esprit-de-corps. It is the job and responsibility of the NCOs to ensure that drill is rewarding for the Cadets.
- 6. Under no circumstances is drill to be given as a punishment. It may however be necessary for a Cadet to receive extra training in any particular field of drill.
302. DRILL INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES:
- 1. General: The instructor must work continually to improve his/her standard of instruction. The techniques in this Aide Memoire shall be adhered to, thus ensuring the success of a period of drill instruction.
- 2. Instructor's Appearance and Bearing: Since example is imitated, the instructor's appearance and bearing must be of the highest standard. When conducting drill (CONTINUED ON THE NEXT PAGE)
