NOTE: Despite often-repeated promotional claims that the issuer had accessed previously uncirculating source recordings, this set has been reliably identified as a commercial clone of a fan project in very limited circulation. Minor variations in the track order between this release and the White Bear release, as well as
inconsistencies in the packaging, led to several prominent reports that one disc in this set was mismastered. Such reports, including
one repeated in an earlier version of this entry, were erroneous. The supposed mastering "errors" involved tracks which were cut off
on the source tapes. More recent reports indicate that this set includes two tracks, a short fragment of "Belchezaar," and a long-circulating take of "Crash On The Levee," which the original White Bear release omitted.
BIAB: My opinion is that it represents a vast improvement over the sound of the 5-CD Genuine Basement Tapes set. Fewer dropouts, and considerably less distortion and much clearer sound on many of the key songs.
