The orchestra plays musical themes
from the songs. (Overture)
A British girl arrives in New York to meet his boyfriend, Joe, only to find him unfaithful to her. She decides to leave him (Let me finish). She tells herself "It's not the end of the world (if I lose him)."
The girl writes a letter to her mother (First letter home to England), saying that she has met another man, a film producer called Sheldon Bloom. He takes the girl to California. She is willing to do anything for him (Sheldon Bloom). However, she finds life in Beverly Hills (a film suburb in California) difficult, and Sheldon is never around (Capped teeth and Caesar salad). She feels being ignored by Sheldon (You made me think you were in love). She feels sad (Capped teeth and Caesar salad (Reprise)).
The girl meets another man who she likes. He is younger than her (It's not the end of the world (if he's younger)). She writes to her mother again (Second letter home). She feels that he is the right person and they will live together for ever (The last man in my life). The man tells the girl that he is leaving New York on a business trip in Baltimore. She senses that something is wrong, and hopes that their romance will survive (Come back with the same look in your eyes). The next morning, a friend tells the girl that the girl's boyfriend has not left the city. She doesn't believe it at first, but finally she admits that she has guessed before that her boyfriend has an affair (Take that look off your face). She hopes that a man who leaves her can at least try to soften the closing blows and "take the hurt out of all the pain" (Tell me on a Sunday).
The girl feels lonely and walks around New York, where she meets a married man (I love New York / It's not the end of the world (if he's married)). She has no romantic interest in him, but vows to date him without making any trouble (Married man). She even tells him they are highly compatible (I'm very you, you're very me). Her girlfriend thinks it is wrong for her to date a married man, but the girl rebuts the charge by challenging her girlfriend's values (Let me finish (Reprise) / Let's talk about you). However, afterwards she re-thinks about her relationship with the married man (Nothing like you've ever known). At night (Finale), the man arrives at her door to prove his love. The girl realizes she does not really like him. She decides she will be able to find another man who suits her.
When you want to fall in love is an additional song appearing in the second part of 'Song and Dance'.
