“What the hell?” Matt questioned.
“That crab right there just pinched me.” Ally said laughing. The entire cast had the day off today because of a script flaw so most of them decided to hit the beach. Everyone was sitting in a big group on an assortment of beach towels and lawn chairs.
“Oh is that all?” Nick teased pretending to be uninterested.
“No kidding,” Cassandra, an extra, added. “You’d figure that you broke a bone with that scream Al.”
“Sorry,” Ally said a little sheepishly. “I think it’s my job to make a complete ass out of myself in front of people.”
“You think,” Nick began. “I know.”
“Wait, you know something. Why does that just not sound like you?” Ally replied playfully.
“Oh that’s it…” Nick said as he quickly scooped Ally in his arms and began walking towards the freezing cold Pacific ocean. Ally kicked and squealed for help, but she knew that he fate was pretty much sealed and because the sky had become increasingly downcast, Ally knew that the water would be frigidly cold. Nick quickly waded out a little ways from the California beach and dropped Ally into the water. Freezing cold, Ally quickly stood up and grabbed Nick’s shoulders and pulled him backwards into the water with her. At this, a massive water fight broke out between Nick, Ally, and the 25 or so cast members that joined in. In mid-fight, Ally felt a pair of hands covering her eyes and leading her towards the shore.
“Stop it Carter,” Ally said laughing. "This isn't funny."
“Carter?” said a familiar voice, “This isn’t ‘Carter’, can you guess who I am.”
Ally felt her entire body go numb. She felt as though she were being held at gun point with realization of who the voice belonged to. It was Ryan. Ally felt herself beginning to panic. “Shit,” Ally thought to herself. “Why the hell is he here? How did he find where I was?” Ally took a deep breath. “Hi Ryan,” she said, as cheerful and friendly as she could, even though inside, she was screaming in fear.
“I thought that you would never guess,” Ryan said as he uncovered Ally’s eyes. “How’s my baby.”
“Wonderful, you?” Ally managed to say, despite her sickening fear of Ryan.
“Couldn’t be better now that I’m here with you,” Ryan said as he leaned in to kiss Ally. Deeply regretting her action, Ally returned Ryan’s kiss.
Meanwhile, the water fight had stopped and people were returning to their beach towels to warm up, despite the fog, which was beginning to settle around the beach. “What the hell,” Nick said, motioning over to Ally and an unknown male who was kissing her, “who the hell is that?”
“I’m not sure,” Matt said bitterly. “But I intend to find out.” Matt quickly got up from the group, followed by Nick, and walked over towards Ally. Jealously and anger were rising in both of them but they managed to keep calm as Matt tapped the unknown man’s shoulder.
Ryan turned around, face to face with two guys, one of which he thought he recognized as Nick Carter from the Backstreet Boys, but he wasn't exactly sure. “Can I help you?” Ryan snapped. Ally’s face was white with fear.
“Maybe, but I think that Ally can help us a little bit better. Who is this Ally?” Matt said, the anger clearly showing in his voice.
Ally’s mind raced with things that she could say, wished that she had said, and wished that she could have said. “Uh…ah,” Ally stammered.
“Come on Al.” Ryan said impatiently. After a very awkward silence, Ryan continued. “Since my girlfriend seems to be in a state of retardation right now, which isn’t unusual, I’m Ryan Blancherd, her boyfriend.”
Both Nick and Matt were full with an array of emotions: jealousy, anger, shock, but most of all, the overwhelming sense of betrayal. Ally found herself unable to say anything. She knew that it wasn’t right hiding the fact that she had a boyfriend from Matt and Nick, but for some reason, she hadn’t found enough courage to tell them.
“Nice to meet you,” Nick said, politely, even though inside, it felt as though his heart had been ripped in half. “My name is Nick Carter and this is Matt Taylor. We are working with Ally in the movie.”
Ryan turned to Ally. “Oh, that right, this little movie that you’ll are doing. I had almost forgotten.”
“If you forgot,” Ally started, hints of anger showing in her voice, “then why are you here.”
“I am in town for the day and I called your cell phone to see if I could get in touch with my girl. Well, someone named Rachel, I think it was, picked up and told me that you were at the beach near Los Angeles and that I should come down here right way, so I decided to come down here and surprise you.”
“That God damn bitch,” Ally thought about Rachel.
“Why don’t you have your phone with you Al?” Ryan asked, looking directly into Ally’s eyes.
Ally did not find the same gentle softness in Ryan’s eyes as she had always found in Nick’s. Instead, she saw only cruelty and destructiveness. “I guess I just forgot. That’s all.”
“That’s you in a nutshell Al. Always forgetting things. Wouldn’t you agree guys?” Ryan asked looking over at Matt and Nick. “Wouldn’t you agree that Ally couldn’t remember anything even if you tattooed it in writing to her forehead.”
Nick could feel the tips of his ears turning red with anger. Even though he was extremely mad at Ally, he knew that she didn’t deserve this in anyway, shape, or form. “No, actually.” Nick said defiantly. “I don’t.” Nick looked over at Ally to find her nervously shuffling her feet in the sand.
“Well then, you must be blind,” Ryan said to Nick as he turned towards Ally. “Anyway hon, I have a meeting that I have to get to. I’ll pick you up at seven for a night on the town. Whhich hotel are you staying in?”
Ally was fighting back the urge to burst into tears. “We’re actually staying in the on-set cabin. I think that the address is 142 Mountview Road which is about 30 minutes from here. It's on a huge movie set, so you can't miss it.”
“Some movie, Al. They can’t even afford a hotel room. What a bust! Anyway, I’ll see you at seven.” Ryan quickly kissed Ally’s cheek. “Bye sweetie.”
Ally watched as Ryan disappeared up the stairs to the beach parking lot and drove away. Silence came over the group of three before Matt spoke up. “Who the hell do you think you are? Do you think that you could have told us that you had a boyfriend Ally? Or was that just too hard for you to accomplish?”
Ally looked up at Matt, shocked that he could say something like that, even though, in her mind, she knew that she deserved it. Finally, Ally could not suppress her tears any longer. “I’m sorry.” Ally whispered before she turned and burst into tears. Not knowing what to do but knowing that things could be worked out, Nick put his hand gently on Ally’s shoulder. “Don’t!” Ally shot back., quickly shifting her body away from Nick. “I don’t deserve it and I don’t deserve your friendship. I don’t deserve any of this!” With that, Ally turned and ran up the stairs leading to the beach parking lot. Matt and Nick watched helplessly as Ally disappeared into the fog.
