Chapter Thirteen

Mackenzie awoke in her bunk on the tour bus around two in the morning. The nausea from the chemo treatment had set in full force and all Mackenzie could do from throwing up everywhere was lay still and stare at the ceiling. “Fun,” she thought to herself. Suddenly, she was startled by the sound of footsteps. Seconds later, Nick’s face appeared between the two curtains that separated Mackenzie’s bunk from the rest of the bus. “What are you doing Carter?” Mackenzie moaned. “It’s two in the morning…are you crazy?”

“Actually, I think so. I just wanted to talk to you about something.”

“And it can’t wait sweetie?” Mackenize said, as softly as she could.

“Well, I guess it can,” Nick pulled the curtains together.

“Nick,” Mackenzie whispered. Nick’s face again appeared in between the curtains. “What is it? I wasn’t sleeping anyway.”

Nick gave Mackenzie a slightly startled look before continuing. “Well, see, this is like the most important thing ever…” He paused. “It’s been bothering me for a while.”

“Damn,” Mackenzie thought. “Please don’t say that he’s caught on.”

“Spring or fall?” Nick asked.

“What?”

“Spring or fall?”

“For what?” Mackenzie said.

“Our wedding. Which do you think, spring or fall?”

“Nick,” Mackenzie started. “You’re crazy.”

“C’mon Mac, it’s really important.”

“Spring,” Mackenzie said smiling. “Everything is the prettiest in spring.”

“I’d have disagree there,” Nick smiled. “You’re beautiful any day.”

Mackenzie was smiling uncontrollably. “You really know how to push the right buttons Carter,” she said. She scooted over a bit in her bunk to allow Nick to sit on the side of her bed. Hours later, after talking the night away, (and Mackenzie hiding her chemo effects very well as she still wasn't brave enough to tell Nick) Nick and Mackenzie finally fell asleep in each other’s arms.
