Brian nodded. "I think so," he said, "But let me run through it one more time. We get to the park at 6:00, and the plain-clothes policemen set-up. At 8:30, I come to the bench next to the statue, and sit down. I have the bag filled with counterfeit bills, and I wait until the kidnapper shows up. I make sure Kara is safe, and then I hand over the bag, and walk quickly into the restrooms next to the fountain, where there will be policemen waiting. Is that right?"
Mike took a deep breath and answered, "Yup, I think you got it."
Brian lowered his head, and mumbled under his breath, "I hope this works."
"We'll get Kara back for you. I promise," Mike replied.
Just then the phone rang. Brian jumped. Taking a deep breath, he answered it.
"H-hello?" he said.
"Well, well, well, if it isn't good old Pappy. Oh, and who do we have sitting next to him? A police officer? Well, I know that couldn't be, because I specifically recall saying no police. But, I regress; I do believe it's our good old friend, Mike!! How is he doing by the way?"
"Who are you? How do you know these things?" Brian asked, looking around frantically for any hint of the kidnapper's identity.
"I am just a person getting revenge. Brian, don't bother looking around. You're not going to find me."
Brian took a second to calm himself down, and answered, "Getting revenge for what? What did I do to you?"
"Brian, Brian, Brian. You can have such a petty mind. For, it's not what you did to me, but what you didn't do. And, don't worry, I won't penalize you for going to the police. If it was my daughter, I would have done the same. Fortunately for me, the police won't be any better at catching me then you would be. Ciao!"
Brian stared bewildered at the phone, as the dial tone sounded.
"Did you catch that on tape?" he asked.
"Yes, If you hold on one minute, I can replay it."
"Okay, I'm gonna go get Kristyn. I'll be right back."
Brian stood up slowly, and walked up the stairs to his and Kristyn's bedroom. Walking in, Brian saw Kristyn curled up in a little ball in the middle of the bed, still fast asleep. He regretted waking her, but he felt she needed to hear the phone conversation.
Walking over to the bed, he gently shook her shoulder. "Angel," he said, "I need you to get up. Sweetie, please get up."
Once Kristyn let things sink in, she remembered the situation they were in, and she shot up out of bed.
"What's going on?" she asked frantically. "Have you heard anything?"
"Actually, Kris, I just got a phone call. I think you should come downstairs and hear it."
Kristyn stood up, and steadied herself, as she felt a little faint from crying so much, and standing up a little too quickly. She walked quickly to the door, followed by Brian. They reached to bottom of the stairs, and Mike looked up.
"Hi, Kristyn, how are you feeling?" he asked politely.
"Shitty," she answered.
"That's understandable," he replied. "Okay, I got the phone conversation ready to play. Would you like to hear it."
Kristyn closed her eyes, and grabbed Brian's hand. "Yes."
Mike replayed the conversation for her. When it was over, Mike looked up, and saw Kristyn with tears in her eyes, and a strange look on her face.
"What is it?" Brian asked, also seeing the look on her face. "What's wrong?"
"I know that voice," Kristyn said slowly. "Who is it?" she said quietly to herself.
A look of terror, and recognition crossed her face. "OHMYGOD!! That's-"
