Chapter Two

"Bye!" Katie yelled as she stepped out of the house that she and Nick shared. They just got back from their weekend at the cabin, with Katie promising to give serious thought about marriage. As she stepped into her car and headed for her part-time job, she began to thinking. She wanted more than anything in thw world to marry Nick, but she knew she couldn't handle college and being with him at the time. She would just wait until after college. She flipped on the music and "I Wanna Love You Forever" by Jessica Simpson had come on. She laughed to herself. It was her and Nick's song. How ironic life was. Her life was coming together for the first time in 20 years. Throughout her whole life, she had been dealt the wrong cards. Her biological father left when she was six, and her mother had a hard time raising her by herself. She often left alone with a babysitter, while her mother desperately saved to keep the house and spend time with Katie. By the time she was 8 her mother remarried and just as things started going good, her parents had been killed in a plane crash when she 16. She had had an abusive relationship before she met Nick and only a couple months after she had met Nick, she began to trust again.

As she parked 2 blocks away from the store she worked at, she realized she was late. She had to hurry to get there before her boss realized. She was going to have to take the shortcut in the alley. She grabbed her purse and hurridly ran across the street and into the deserted alley. She walked fast and brisk and as she reached the end, a hand grabbed her mouth and a knife went across her throut. Fear ran through her entire body and before she could think to scream, a bat hit her in the stomach and knocked her unconscious.
