Chapter Twelve

Day Thirteen

Devyn finally allowed herself to sleep in late after realizing at 4:30 in the morning that today was Saturday and that she wouldn’t have to go to physics for two whole days. When she finally emerged from her room at 5 in the afternoon, she was a little relieved that Nick had gone out. Apparently, according to the note, he and Mike were out shopping for a new stereo system for his car. For this first time in forever, Devyn had the entire dorm room to herself and she basked in this fact by watching cartoons and eating cereal, something that she hadn’t done in over four years. After only thirty minutes, Devyn heard a key click into the door and cursed under her breath. The laughter outside gave it away; her moment was over.

“That’s a good one Nick. Do you wanna loose an eye or something?” Mike asked, stomping off the snow from his shoes. He turned his attention to Devyn who was trying to ignore the fact that the two had walked in. “Hey Dev,” he said. “It snowed like 4 ft?”

“You know I hate snow. Why do you announce that it is on the ground?”

“Eh, you were gonna hear it sometime,” Nick said.

“And it had to be through you?” Devyn half-smiled. “I could have called that one.”

“What do you mea…” Nick was cut off by the sound of the doorbell.

“Damn Nick, you didn’t say that they would be here now,” Mike said.

Nick shrugged a little and slyly moved to open the door. Right on time, Claudia and Julie entered, each carrying take-out bags from Tony Roma’s. Claudia was a beautiful super-model type with long blond hair and long legs whereas Julie was a gorgeous shorter brunette. “Are we early?” Claudia asked, her French accent permeating the room.

“Nope, right on time,” Nick lied as he led Julie and Claudia to the kitchen and Mike could only follow gawking.

Meanwhile, Devyn was left on the couch, in her flannel pajamas and a cup of hot chocolate in her hand, completely lost. Who were those two women and why were they over here with Mike and Nick? More importantly though, what did this mean for Nick as far as Devyn went? Jealousy, anger, and depression ate at Devyn on the inside as she got up from the couch and practically ran to her room. “Who was that?” Devyn heard one of the Barbie dolls say.

“Oh, just our roommate,” Nick replied. “You’ll have to excuse her. She’s a little out there if you know what I mean…”

Laughter reverberated around the kitchen as Devyn took a deep breath to contain the desire to march in there and shove the bag of chocolate chips down Nick’s throat. Magically, she refrained. Instead, she pulled on a pair of tight black leather pants and a red halter top, fixed her hair into butterfly knots, ran lipstick over her lips, and walked boldly into the kitchen trying to convince herself that she wasn't really this shallow. “Hey, have you guys seen my shoes…I seem a little out there today,” Devyn glared coldly at Nick when she spoke.

“Yeah…” Nick stuttered, his jaw almost at the floor. “They’re…they’re…over there.”

“Thanks Porky,” Devyn smiled sarcastically. “Have fun tonight you two,” she called as she flipped her leather jacket over her shoulder and grabbed the key off the hook. “Use protection.” At that, Devyn slammed the door and walked down the stairs, but once she reached the finally step, she had no idea where to go. It was 6:50…no one was going out that early. Devyn walked to her Jeep and got in but just sat there for a couple minutes. Finally she decided to head out to the local coffee shop and she if she could pick up a cutie or two before 8:00. With that in mind, Devyn started the ignition and steered the Jeep towards The Starlight Café.

At 3:00 in the morning Devyn was finally winding down to what turned out to be a wonderful night. At The Starlight, she had ran into Eric, a second year pre-med at Columbia and the two of them had talked until midnight. When the coffee shop closed, Eric decided that Midnight Bowling was in order at the City Lanes downtown and so he and Devyn competed vigorously for four straight games before they called it quits, Eric beating Devyn three games to one. The night ended in a promise of a telephone call and a kiss on the doorstep. When Devyn finally got the door open to the dorm room, she was startled at Nick’s voice. “Where have you been?” he asked angrily.

“I was out Mother. Any more questions?”

“Oh hundreds but I am so pissed off that I can’t even speak correctly so I’m not going to try.”

“When do you ever speak correctly? Just spit it out. Begin with, ‘I’m mad at you because…’ and then go on from there. You’ll be fine.”

“Because you are a total bitch.”

Devyn sighed a bit, “Good night Nick,” she said as she walked away. She wasn’t going to start a stupid fight through names.

“Is that all you’re gonna do Devyn? Just walk away? Oh, of course you are, that’s the type of person you are. You always just walk away from things.”

Devyn wheeled around on her heels. “Don’t you dare,” she whispered. “You don’t know me. You don’t know shit about me. I have tried to not walk away from something once in my life because I know what it feels like to have someone walk away from you. You know I’m a “total bitch” and have treated you like a jackass for 14 days now, but do you know anything else? Nope. Now, I’m sorry Nick, I’m really sorry. You and I acted immature and spiteful to each other from the moment that we met, and that sucks, but that’s how it is and for that I apologize, but for this…I don’t care. I don’t! So go ahead, make presumptions but don’t even think for one second that you can sum me up because you can’t.”

“Of course I can Devyn. You’re the little bitch whose daddy sends money every single week so that you can go out any buy useless shit, like that jacket you’re wearing. You’re the type of girl that doesn’t care what you say or what you do to other people because you think that other people are going to bail your ass out of situations like that…”

Devyn cut Nick off. “You couldn’t be more far off if you tried Nick Carter. I don’t know where I ever gave you the idea that I was rich…I’m not. And if you associated possessions and a snobby attitude towards you as rich…then you have a lot of learning to do. I don’t even know why you would hit on something so immature and cliché. Everything that you see here is the result of many years of working. Many years. We’re talking ever since I was 10 years old. My daddy doesn’t send me shit Nick because you know what? I don’t have a daddy. I don’t have a mom for that matter. I was abandoned when I was born on someone’s front doorstep and ever since then I have been searching without any leads to find the person that left me there. I don’t have a clue who the hell I am or where I came from but the point is, I’m here now and I’m here because I worked to get here with my own two hands. So you know what? If you have a problem with me, then don’t hit on things that are un-researched and biased because it’s not going to get you anywhere. Now, granted what I may have said tonight might have ruined your chances with whats-her-name, but that gives you no right to make presumptions and use them against me.”

“I…I…ah.”

“Good night Nick.” Devyn walked into her room and shut the door leaving Nick out in the dark, stumbling over the events of the night.
