Alexandria Martin walked up to the reception desk at the Boulevard Hospital with her mom and her best friend, Antoinette.
"So, what's his name again?" Mrs. Martin whispered to Ally.
"Just ask to see Billy Lovato" She told her mom.
"Yes?" The receptionist, who's tarnished gold name tag read 'Christena' said.
"Can we please see Billy Lovato?" Ally's mom asked.
"Relatives or....?" Christena the receptionist asked.
"My daughter and her friend are friends from school. To be honsest, I don't even know the kid"
"We're never gonna get in now..." Ally whispered sarcastically to Toni.
"Yea, really" She said back. Toni'd been rather silent that day, speaking only when spoken to, and even then, very breifly.
"I'm sorry. We can only allow family members." Christena the receptionist told them.
"But" Toni bursts out suddenly. "Billy really has no relatives, besides his twin sister, and she hates him, so I guess me and Ally kinda count as sisters, you see, his parents died in a car crash 2 years ago and his step brother, only earlier this month. C'mon, just please let us in?" She wiped a tear from her eyes, as her and Ally paused, waiting hopefully.
"No, I'm sorry. Maybe another time when you come with his sister. Thank you, come again." She smiled, but her eyes glanced a warning glare at them.
"Oh, that worked real well" Ally commented. "Now we're never gonna get to see him!"
"Alexandria..." Came her mother's voice.
"Sorry." She said climbing into the SUV and buckling her seatbelt. Toni climbed in and sat next to her. There was a hushed nervous silence on the drive back home. Neither Ally nor Toni sang, or even hummed when '1985' came on the radio. That's how silent it was.
"Ok, that's it, Everybody out" Mrs. Martin said, when she stepped in the garage of her pale green house. Toni often called it the turtle house, as did Ari. They walked up the steps and in the door in silence, taking off their shoes and shuffling up to Ally's bedroom.
"I can't belive she didn't buy that" Ally sighed and flopped down on her blue bedspread, rumpling it and causing her clean laundry to fall onto the carpet. Toni sat down beside her.
"We're not his family, Ally. But it was worth a try. I mean, come on." She twirled a strand of her hair with a finger, and straightened her glasses. "I wish I had contacts" She said. "Maybe my Grammy would let me get some"
"Maybe your Grammy would let you sleep over" Ally suggested. Toni shoved her playfully.
"Oh, she won't mind." She said, rolling her eyes. Ally rolled over and sat up.
"K. It's Friday anyways"
"Ooh really? Doesn't feel like a Friday" Toni flipped through Ally's CD's. "Good Charlotte, The Killers, Blink 182, Simple Plan...Michelle Branch...?" She laughed and gave Ally a side glance, as if to ask her why. "And Avril Lavigne"
"I 'unno...Ooh, put The Killers on!" Ally said excitedly. "Somebody told me that you had a boyfriend that looked like a girlfriend..."She broke off into song.
"Ally, you are really out of tune" Toni said, putting the CD in the CD player and pressing play. The first few notes of 'Somebody Told Me' sent Ally swaying with a really creepy satisfied face.
"I'm thirsty" She said suddenly. "Carbonated sugar?"
"Bottled water" Toni said, not wanting any soda. She didn't like soda. It was too fizzy.
"No! No bottled water!" Ally said, jumping on Toni. "Bad, Tone!"
"But I like water..." Toni whined, standing up. Ally stood up also. Well, tried to anyways, as she was still in a crumple on the floor from leaping on Toni.
"A little help here" She said, reaching ot for Toni's hand. Toni, who held out her hand for Ally to grab it, stifled back a giggle. Ally looked like someone who was about to suffer a slow and painful death. Ally grabbed Toni's hand, and Toni attempted to pull Ally up, but they both fell in a heap on the carpet. Then the phone rang and they heard, "Alexandria, it's for you!"
"K mom!" Ally yelled back, and reached for the cordless phone. "Hello?" She said. It was Kim Bouvier, their friend from the other class.
Kim - Hey, Alexa
Ally - Hey Kim, what's up? Then she whispered to Toni, "It's Kim"
Kim - So didja hear about that Billy kid?
Ally - Yea, he was at my house, earlier that day.
Kim - Ooh, really? But I thought you were going out with Seb...
Ally - I am. It's Toni who likes Billy.
"Do not!" Toni objected, grabbing the phone from Ally's hand.
Toni - Hey Kim, I do NOT like Billy. I was tutoring him.
Kim - I go to a math tutor....her name's Susan.
Toni - So?
Kim - So did you see Tom today? He said hi to me and was wearing a yellow shirt.
Toni - That's nice, Kim.
Kim - Oh, guess what
Toni - What? Chicken butt?
Kim- I wasn't gonna say that!
Toni - I'm sure.
Kim - Oh you know what?
Toni - Wat?
Kim - Tinkerbell got another bisectomy.
Toni - Kim!
"What'd she say?" Ally asked, perplexed. "What?"
"Tinkerbell got another you-know-what."
"Kim! God..." Ally said, rolling her eyes.
"Alexandria! Toni! Dinner's ready!"
"K, coming mom!" Ally yelled back.
Toni - K Kim I gotta go, supper's ready.
Kim - I want a pizza pop.
Toni - That's nice, Kim.
Kim - I know. K bye.
Toni - Bye.
"C'mon Toni" Ally said, taking the phone from Toni's hand and putting it down.
