Confederate Congressman Alexander Boteler

A Congressman from Jefferson County (1859-1861), Boteler served on Stonewall Jackson's staff (1861) and in the Confederate Congress (1862-1864).Mr.Boteler, from Shepherdstown, served as anintermediary between Stonewall Jackson and the government in Richmond thereby helping to keep Jackson from resigning after an incident with W. W. Loring.

During the war,his fine estate, Fountain Rock, near Shepherdstown, was burned by Federal Forces. aa
