Part 1
In all his wildest dreams, he’d never imagined his future would turn out like this. This was definitely NOT how it was supposed to be at all. They were supposed to raise their children together, watch them grow up, get married, and have children of their own. They were supposed to celebrate birthdays, and Broadway openings together, their fiftieth wedding anniversary, so many things they were supposed to do together but now never would.
It had all been so typical of how this kind of news came. It was the middle of the night, around 2 AM, only he hadn’t been asleep. They had had a show that night, the last show, and he had just gotten in from the wrap party thrown by management. He’d kicked off his boots and was reaching for his cell phone to call home when it rang. He didn’t recognize the number, just the area code was the same as home, but something in the back of his mind told him to answer it anyway. That one phone call had brought him to his knees and changed his life forever.

“Hello?”
“This is Sgt. Mike Elliot of the Kentucky State Police. I would like to speak with Mr. Kevin Scott Richardson.”
“Speaking.”
“Mr. Richardson, I’m calling to inform you that your wife, Tyler Dorough Richardson, was involved in a car accident tonight at approximately 10 PM.”
Funny how your mind goes to what you were doing when someone mentions a time. His went to their show. They had been in the middle of it. What song had they been doing?
“Where is she now?”
Kevin’s voice was flat, devoid of all emotion as he struggled to hold it together.
“She was air-lifted to Chandler Medical.”
Kevin hesitated, not really wanting to ask but knowing he had to. ”Is…is she alive?”
“She is in critical condition, Mr. Richardson.”
“Was she alone?”
“Yes sir. I was informed by a fellow officer who knows your family that your mother has your children with her.”
“Thank you, Sgt. Elliot.”
