Part 2

Telling Howie and the others the news had been even harder than the phone call and seeing Howie’s tears, he’d forced himself to hold it together.  He wasn’t going to let anyone see the pain that was shattering his heart.  He’d flown to Lexington that night with Howie and together, they had sat vigilantly by her bed, not leaving her.  When the doctors had pronounced her dead, he’d put up yet another wall while Howie had cried.

Now, two weeks later, on their tenth wedding anniversary, he sat graveside, their oldest son Scott on one side, their other son, Jerald, on the other, and their daughter, Taylor, in his lap.  He couldn’t feel or hear anything; his entire being paralyzed by the pain of her death.  As the minister spoke of joining God in heaven, he stared at the casket covered in white roses that held his ‘Tadpole’.

As the service ended, friends filled by offering their condolences but Kevin didn’t respond.  Even when Joey, Scott’s biological father, spoke to him, he didn’t react.

From behind the family, AJ spoke softly to Brian and Nick.  “Kevin is going to break soon and it’s not going to be good.”

The two agreed with him.  None of them had ever seen Kevin like this and the only thing they knew to do was be there to give support.
