Welcome to Caitlin's Dolphin Page!

Welcome to my web site all about some of the most amazing animals on planet Earth--dolphins! It might surprise some people to know that there is no such thing as a dolphin. No, that's not a typo--there really is no such thing as a dolphin! At least, not in the sense that we think it. The term "dolphin" refers to any and all animals of the Delphinoidea family. What everyone thinks of when they hear the word dolphin is the bottle-nosed dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), immortalized by the famous television star Flipper, but there are actually about 34 species in this family, depending upon who you ask--from the 1.2 m (4 ft) tucuxi (Sotalia fluviatilis) to the 9 m (30 ft) orca or killer whale (Orcinus orca). There used to be 32, but two species (the common dolphin and the pilot whale) split as scientists learned more about them. Click on the links below to learn more about the species.

The purpose of this site is to educate you, the reader, about these amazing animals. If you think that there should be something here that isn't, please feel free to e-mail me at this address.

That's just about it for now. Hope you have fun and learn something!
