The Shiba Inu is the smallest of the native Japanese breed of dogs. It was originally developed to hunt small game in the dense undergrowth of Japan's mountainous areas. The name "Shiba Inu" loosely translated means "little brushwood dog".

The Shiba is a compact little dog with a well muscled structure. There is a distinct difference in appearance between males and females: males are more robust without courseness and females more refined without being frail. The male should be between 14.5 in. and 16.5 in. in height and females should be between 13.5 in. and 15.5 in. in height. Anything under or over this is a disqualification in the show ring. The three preferred colors are: red, red sesame, and black and tan. Any other color is a serious fault in the show ring.

The Shiba is a very active, alert, intelligent little dog. It is a wonderful watchdog and companion. They are loyal to a degree. Their streak of independence, mixed with their curiosity and hunting instincts makes them runners. Keeping your dog on lead, obedience classes, and a fenced in yard are all strongly recommended

For your dogs health and well being as well as your peace of mind it is strongly suggested that all pets be spayed or neutered. This in no way takes away from the quality of your pet. All breeding/show animals should be tested for: knees, hips, eyes, elbows, patellas, and heart. Most good vets can do these checks for you and you may want to have certifications done as well also.
