I didn’t want to catch him like this. I wanted to burst in on him and Jennifer. But I guess it didn’t matter where the conversation had to take place.
“I can’t believe you! I can’t believe…” tears blurred my vision, despite my efforts not to cry.
“What are you… oh no, its not what it looks like!” Brian began.
“Really? Cuz what it looked like was you blowing me off so you could go on a date with her tonight! What it looks like was you meeting her at the gas station, I saw you! And I heard your conversation with her in the kitchen!”
“Huh? She wasn’t talking to me…”
“Then how come she came out of the kitchen, and a minute later, so did you? Huh?”
“Look, I can explain…”
“Ha. Maybe you can. But I don’t want to hear it right now, I’m too mad… we’ll talk later,” I walked out to the parking lot and hopped in the backseat beside Amy.
When I got out of Jennifer’s car a moment earlier, I saw her getting in with AJ and another guy. I’d asked them to wait a minute so I could catch a ride with them. I saw Brian walking towards the car, but AJ didn’t notice and just drove away.

“These fries are really good,” I said, biting into one.
“This food better be good for the prices on the menu,” Jennifer noted. “I mean…” she froze.
“What’s wrong?” I asked. She didn’t move. She looked behind me.
I followed her gaze to the window. There was Brian walking by. He looked over at us and then paused for a second. Then he sent us a look. A knowing look. He kept walking. He hadn't been the least surprised to see us. I got up and looked out another window to see him get into his car.
I cursed under my breath. “He knows,” I told Jennifer.
“We don’t know for sure he knows.”
“I saw that look. He does. I’m sure of it.”
“Do you think he’ll tell Howie and Tracy?” her worried expression came back.
“I don’t know…” I admitted. “How? What a big coincidence he was here.”
A look of realization came to Jen’s face. “Remember? Him and Nick were home that day when we were discussing this. We don’t know for sure that one or both of them did come down.”
“Yeah. Probably just Brian, though. I didn’t see Nick with him.”
“…and this morning,” she continued, “Erin was talking to him about going out tonight. He said he had something to do…he followed us. It wasn’t a coincidence. He followed us!” she looked angry.
“Come on, we have to get home. We have to try to stop him from telling Tracy and Howie! They can’t find out… we’ll explain everything to him…”
We quickly paid for our half-eaten food and rushed outside. I walked Jennifer to her car. She froze again.
“What?”
She opened her backdoor and picked something up. After examining it, she handed it to me.
“A peace frog necklace, so what?” I didn’t see the significance.
“It’s Erin’s.”
“She must’ve dropped it…”
“No,” she shook her head. “When I got in the car to come here, there was a blanket covering up the back. And look, now its folded aside.”
“Like someone was there?”
“Yeah,” she nodded. “She must’ve been under the blanket. She followed us, too.”
“I didn’t see her with Brian… how’d she get home?”
“I don’t know… maybe she’s still here… but we need to catch Brian,” she said.
“Right,” I raced to my car. We had to get to Brian before he told them, but he already had a five minute lead… how could I explain to Tracy? Would she ever understand?
