The next day I got a call from Nick. "Hear about Jen and Brian?" he asked me.
"Yup, I heard. Why?" I replied.
"Well, now's your chance to tell him you like him!"
"He hasn't even been single for 24 hours yet! He needs some time." I shot back.
"I know, but we've only got like two more months of school left! He's already decided on a Baptist college north of here, a few hours away. He won't be right down the street or at the same lunch table anymore." he pointed out. And he was right. I didn't have time to waste.
"Your right, I know your right. Just not yet, like I said, he needs some time." I gave an excuse.
"Okay, whatever." he didn't believe me. "I'll talk to ya later."
This year was flying by! Every day that week Nick bugged me about Brian. I finally got up the nerve on Friday. I figured if worse came to worse and he didn't like me, I'd have a weekend for him, and whoever else found out about it, to be forgotton. We were sitting in Geometry class. Math was the only subject I had with him besides Choir. I was in advanced and he had taken Algebra in 2 parts. I finished writing him a note and was about to pass it to him when...
"We need Brian Littrell in the office, please." the announcer in the classroom rang. He didn't come back by the end of class, but there were only about five minuted left. The worst timing in the world! It couldn't have waited til I had passed the dumb note, could it? I didn't see him again until lunch.
"Did you tell him?" Nick asked, we were the first ones seated at the lunchtable.
"No, I was about to when he was called out of the room." I answered. “Here he comes.” I told him, looking towards the cafeteria door. “Where’d you go during Geometry?” I asked.
“My cousin, Kevin, was on the phone.” He replied.
“I remember him. The one that works as Aladdin in Disney World. Why was he calling you in school?” Nick wondered.
“Well he’s just started a group with two other guys and they wanna make the harmonies richer and want to add two more. He knew I loved to sing and stuff so I’m flying down there tomorrow to try-out and see if the other two guys get along with me and everything.” Brian expounded.
“How long will you be gone? What about graduation?” I asked.
“I don’t know and I guess I’d get a tutor. I just really have a good feeling about this! And Nick, there is still a fifth spot open. You want to come, too?”
“Um, I don’t know...I don’t have much time to think about it.” Nick studdered, surprised. Lunch ended. Probably our last lunch with Brian and maybe Nick for awhile. Nick caught up with me on the way to my next class.
“You can’t stall any longer, you gotta tell him how you feel.” He told me.
“What good would it do now? He’s leaving.” I replied, sullen.
“I don’t know, you’ll get it out and he’ll know. I think you should though. I gotta get to class, c-ya!” he called, walking down the hall.
Brian came over that night. “Hey, my flight leaves early tomorrow, and I just wanted to say good-bye.”
“Yeah, bye to you, too. Call me, write me, anything, okay?” I told him.
“Okay, I will.” He promised. There was silence a minute and he turned to go.
“Wait, I’ve got something to tell you.” I said, he looked back. I tried to, I wanted to… “Just, uh, good-luck.” I managed a fake smile.
“Thanks! Bye!” he left. Nick did in fact go with him. I waited the rest of the school year for a letter, a phone call, anything. But nothing came. I thought about asking his parents for an address to reach him, but I was too mad he had broken his promise that I couldn't get myself to. By the end of the school year, I was hit with the news that my dad had gotton a job transfer and that we were moving. Over the next two years I stayed good friends with Heather, and even Tracy and Jen.
