All helicopter pilots by mid 1966 had gone through the same training prior to being introduced to helicopters. The T-28B was used for advanced training in formation, gunnery and instruments by many. The T-28C was used for carrier training and carrier qualification. All pilots in the Marine Corps at that time had to be instrument qualified AND qualify aboard an aircraft carrier in fixed wing before they could enter helicopter training.
