Turtle Trek (Episode 178) Review

BRIEF STORYLINE: Shredder, Bebop and Rocksteady succeed for once against the turtles, and manage to install the Energy Transmitter inside the Power Relay Station and escape undamaged!

At the turtles lair, the turtles quarrel over whose fault it is, that let Shredder get away from them last time. Splinter tries to ease this bad atmosphere by telling to stop thinking of Shredder and spend their time doing good things, which the turtles do not get.

Over at the Hall of Science, Krang unleashes his new Dimensional Portal thanks to the installation, and he can now get access to Dimension X.

Donatello's figures out there is a power surge coming from the Hall of Science, thanks to his devices in the lair. They go to the location, and find the place empty, with only the switched on Dimensional Portal lying there. They gather that Shredder, Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady have travelled to Dimension X, but don't know what their incentives are.

Suddenly, they hear a voice cry out for help. They find the source of the screech and it's an alien from Dimension X called Gargon. He reveals his past of having Krang abducting him and experimenting on him, usuing a new kind of mutagen. The turtles obey Splinter's previous saying of doing good things, and they free him in exchange for Gargon telling wherabouts Shredder is in Dimension X.

However, the turtles start to get supicious of Gargon's directions as they get ambushed by aliens and monsters, then being dropped into a warzone, and not getting to Shredder and Krang.

The turtles suspicions come true, as they are led into a trap! Shredder has them in his grip now, and is pointing the Retro-Mutagen Cannon right at them! Is it back to the pet shop for the turtles?

TMNT REVIEW HQ COMMENTS: Far from great finale to the 8th Season. It's a weak episode to me. It does start of well with some action served up quickly between the turtles and Shredder at the Power Relay Station. Then the quality of this episode goes downhill from there, but not without some original and interesting situations.

One of the few humourous moments is when the turtles hear the cry for help, and Raphael dismisses it as someone with the TV still switched on. Leading up to the arrival of Gargon to this episode.

The action scene on another planet involving dinosaur-like monsters is just OK, and the beginning of the turtles repetitively critism of Gargon's direction and lack of bravery. There's not a great amount of depth to the character of Gargon, but after all, he is only a one-off minor character. However, you can see a mile off that Gargon will double-cross the turtles, and he does, by helping Shredder in return for him to his normal appearance, which ain't too pretty either.

The rogue gang called "The Wrecking Crew" are a decent, memorable bunch of villains that the turtles tackle in a scrappy segment. A very original idea, as you may've noticed or guessed that it is an ugly big green alien who has somehow had parts of his body dissected, and fitted with machinery to make up the rest of the body, there are 4 machines/members in total. On another interesting note, the spaceship the turtles and Gargon escape in, is rather much like the Neutrino's fancy flying car.

The action scene where the turtles are in a warzone is a bit dissappointing. The best bits are when the turtles are taking out the Rock soldiers, and should've been more hand/feet combat involved.

Things do get interesting, in a dialogue scene which is reminiscent of the comics and first TMNT movie, when Raphael quarrels to Leonardo whether he is the best leader for them. The finale is ok but badly edited, including the Technodrome falling down a pit into a large plant with long tentacles. Gargon changes sides again, helping the turtles in a twist, stopping Shredder.

The episode ends unimpressively, but one thing to notice is they use images from the sewers outside the lair, which you usually see at the beginning of episodes in previous seasons.

"TURTLE TREK" GETS A: 2/5 RATING.
