Anthy is the Rose Bride, engaged to whomever is the current Victor of the Duel. She is supposed to have no will of her own, and only obey the wishes of her current Victor. Her glasses and tightly bound hair are a symbol of her imprisonment to the Rose Seal.

Anthy is not, however, a robot with no feelings or personality. Anthy loves animals, and keeps many pets. She enjoys tending to the rose garden (which is, incidently, shaped like a bird cage - another symbol). She immediately develops an attachment (and a preference) to Utena, even when she is still engaged to Saionji. "I wish you luck," she says to Utena as she prepares to battle Saionji. Later, this attachment grows deeper and stronger, and Anthy is forced to battle with her older brother Akio for Utena's affections. Anthy can seem oblivious at times - she daydreams often, retreats into her own world, and gets poor grades in school. However, it is more likely that she is intensely observing the world around her, rather than ignoring it. She seems uncommonly knowledgeable of the doings of Utena and her friends. Anthy may be more content watching than participating. Sometimes she reacts emotionally during the duels over her, sometimes she watches impassively. She also has mysterious talents, such as being able to play the piano as well as Miki but not remembering when she learned to play.

The essential question about Anthy's personality is this: Does she really want to be free? Miki thought so, and was proved wrong. Utena thought so, and continually denied the fact that Anthy was "engaged" to her. This question is not fully answered until the final episode.
