Jean Marie Auel (nee Untinen) was born on the 18th of February, 1936, in Chicago, Illinois, the second of five children. She married Ray Bernard Auel after high school, and they raised 5 children.

In 1976 she got an idea for a short story about a prehistoric girl. She started research on the subject, and the 'short story' became a draft of 450 000 words, in six parts- the basis of the best-selling Earths Children books.
In September 1978 the Clan of the Cave Bear was finished. It was hard to find a publisher for her series of books, given the prospect of 5 more books to follow.
In September 1980, 2 years after the completion of the book, The Clan of the Cave Bear was released. It was a huge success, selling 100 000 copies in it's first month and skyrocketing to the best-seller lists, where it stayed for 8 months.
The rest of course, is history.......

Nobody knows when the fifth book is supposed to come out. The publication has been delayed :(
