Here is the latest news concerning the National Karate Association of Scotland.
WISHAW GRAND PRIX (I) 2007
Siu Loong sent a team compete in the the first Wishaw Grand Prix of the year. The event itself was by far the busiest in a long while and of a tremendous standard which can only help the squad gain vital experience.
In Kata 6-9 years open Christopher Doolan was unfortunate to be eliminated in the first round. However, Ainsley Rea battled her way through two rounds to reach the semi-finals. She was unfortunate to be eliminated by the winner but she picked up a bronze nonetheless.
Aidan Feeney, Stephen Doolan, Darren Owens, Lauren Cuthberts and Gary Rea all competed in the 10-15 years junior grade Kata event. Darren was unlucky to be drawn against the eventual winner of the division and got eliminated in the first round. Aidan, Stephen, Lauren and Gary all advanced to the quarter finals and Aidan was drawn against Lauren. The others were eliminated and Lauren advanced to the semi-finals before being defeated but picked up a bronze medal.
Jamie Robinson was very unlucky to be eliminated from the 10-15 years advanced grade Kata after being pitched in a very tough section.
Grant Wyper and David Woods competed in the senior male Kata event. David advanced through a round to reach the last 16 before being eliminated by the eventual bronze medalist. Grant advanced through four rounds to reach the final. He picked up the silver medal.
In Kumite, Ainsley was eliminated 1-0 in a close fought contest in the 6-9 years open. Congratulations to all the competitors.
WUKO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS SQUAD SELECTED
The squad to represent the National Karate Association at the WUKO World Championships in Valencia this June has been selected.
KATA - Grant Wyper, David Woods, Derek Pollock
The trio will also compete in the Team Kata section and are looking to improve on their bronze medal at the WUKO European Championships which were held in Austria last year.

Siu Loong students Grant Wyper and David Woods competed in the Scottish University Karate Championships held in the University of Edinburgh on March 17. Grant was there as part of the University of Glasgow squad while David was part of the Glasgow Caladoneon University squad.
The pair were entered into the Male Senior Advanced Kata where they were faced by a group in excess of 20. David competed in pool one of this group, working his way to the final after receiving a bye in the first round. David was narrowly defeated in the final of pool 1 by the eventual silver medalist. In pool 2, Grant negotiated his way to the second round before receiving a bye into the next round after his opponent failed to return. Grant made his way to the final of pool 2 and was defeated by the eventual winner. Both competitors managed to withstand the challenge in the reprecharge system where they successfully defended their place to both pick up joint 3rd in the Senior Male Advance Kata.
David fought in the over 75kg+ Kumite division soon after. After a promosing display he was eleiminated by the eventual silver medalist. Then as part of team Kumite squad David was up first and fought bravely, clawing it back to 3-3 before falling down 4-3, but however was unlucky not to have been scored another sanbon prior to this. David received a small knock which ruled him out of the rest of the match. The team lost their match and were eliminated.
Overall the event was a great day. Well done to both competitors. The pair are currently scheduled to represent their respective Universities in the British University Karate Championships in Bath from April 14-15.
CHOJINKAI CHILDREN & CADETS OPEN KARATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Siu Loong recently sent a small squad consisting of Jamie Robinson, Lauren Cuthberts, Gary Rea, Aidan Feeney and Ainsley Rea alongside coaches Derek Pollock and Grant Wyper to represent the National Karate Association. The event took place in the Penrith Leisure Centre on Sunday March 11 and was the first time the event has taken place.
The event kicked off with the 6-9 years boys and girls Kata division 9-7th kyu where Ainsley bravely battled through five rounds to make it to the final. Ainsley was narrowly defeated by a split-decision in the final and picked up a silver medal, the first medal of the day. Onwards to the 10-12 years boys and girls Kata division 6-4th kyu where Aidan, Gary and Lauren competed. The trio passed through three rounds and all made the quarter finals. Lauren and Gary were eliminated, however Aidan advanced to the semi finals before being eliminated, adding a bronze medal to the tally. The trio then competed in the 10-12 years 9-4th kyu team Kata event where they picked up a gold medal. In the boys and girls kata 10-12 years brown and black belt category, Jamie was eliminated from a very tough section.
Onto the kumite, in the girls 8-9 years 9-6th kyu, Ainsley battled through four rounds making her way to the final. In a closely fought match, Ainsley narrowly won, adding a gold to the medal haul. In the boys kumite 10-12 years under 45kg, Aidan was unfortunately injured in his first match and as a consequence was eliminated from the division. Lauren topped off a great day by winning two fights on her way to the semi-finals of the girls kumite 10-12 years where she was narrowly defeated but won a bronze.
