Double H Charter Year Trek
Only 170 crews were accommodated for 2004 in its inaugural year to
welcome scouts from all over the country. Justin, Trevor, Craig,
Brian and Dodge were Troop 32 scouts who combined with Troop 302 from
Circle Ten Council for this awesome experience.

They were among the
very first scouts to visit with few trails and lots of primitive camping.
There was no established trail system as groups used GPS
to travel and their destinations were only limited by the availability of
water from windmill pumped wells. Stories of scouts passing out and bears
eating their snacks were among the rumored adventures of the group. The
Double H trek was like no other anyone has experienced at Philmont because
its been decades since brand new ground was hiked by attendees. With over
100,000 acres to explore on their 7 day trek, they enjoyed the first look of
some of the best hiking in the southwest. Hiking through the open Ponderosa
forest, they found that the Double H is truly a southwestern wilderness
experience. Along the way they experienced programs like astronomy, geo-caching,
advanced land navigation, black powder shooting and much more.
The Double H experience was created through a partnership with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. Initial expeditions were 7 day treks at elevations over 8,000 feet. The Double H Base is located between Datil and Magdalena, New Mexico. The season ran from June 21st through August 2nd and began with treks that ranged from 50 to 60 miles.
The following is a copy of the text of a letter mailed to the Double H Charter year contingents:
“Dear Double H Crew,
I want to congratulate you on being one of the first crews to participate at the Double H Adventure Base. The adventure that you are about to begin is one that you will remember for a lifetime!
Our goal at the Double H is to carry out the vision statement of Philmont Scout Ranch. We will strive to provide the same kind of quality staff and experience that you will find at Philmont. Even though it is located at a different place and the structure is different, you will have an experience of a lifetime.
Please look over the…
I look forward to seeing you this summer.
Happy Trails!
