1907-27 Washington Senators

  • Won 417 games, second only to Cy Young in career victories.

  • Pitched 110 shutouts, a major league record.

  • Won an MVP award in 1913 when he went 36-7 with a 1.12 ERA, 243 strikeouts, and 12 shutouts.

  • Had a 2.16 career ERA, a major league record for pitchers with more than 2,000 innings pitched.

  • Went 23-7 in 1924 to win a second MVP award as he led the Washington Senators to their first World Series ever. Johnson then won Game 7 for the Senators by pitching four scoreless innings of relief against the Giants. The Senators appeared in their only other World Series the next year against the Pirates, Johnson won two games but lost game seven when his teammates gave up four unearned runs.

  • Won 32 games with 303 strikeouts and a 1.39 ERA in 1912.

  • Had 3,509 career strikeouts, a major league record for almost 60 years until it was surpassed in 1983 by Steve Carlton and Nolan Ryan.

  • Was one of the five original inductees into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936.

  • Had one of the most spectacular fastballs in the history of the game.

  • Johnson had two main nicknames. Both were in honor of his fastball--"The Big Train" and "Barney" (in honor of famous turn-of-the-century race car driver Barney Oldfield.)
