"Spahn and Sain and pray for rain."

  • Lead the NL in wins five times, strikeouts four, shutouts four, and ERA three.

  • Started more double plays (82) than any other pitcher in major league history.

  • Also deadly with the bat, Spahn holds the NL record for home runs hit by a pitcher with 35.

  • He was the inspiration behind one of the most famous sayings in baseball history--"Spahn and Sain and pray for rain"---an homage to the spectacular one-two punch of Braves starters Spahn and Johnny Sain in 1948.

  • Upon leaving the Giants in 1965, Spahn pitched in the Mexican League for two more years.
