Whitey Ford
Pitcher

1950, 1953-67 New York Yankees

  • .690 career winning percentage is the best of any modern pitcher with at least 200 wins. Had a 236-106 career record.

  • Holds record for most World Series wins with 10.

  • Won the American League Cy Young Award in 1961 by going 25-4 and helping to lead the Yankees to yet another World Series win.

  • Ford only had two 20 win seasons in his career because 1950s Yankee manager Casey Stengel usually used Ford only against the Yankees toughest opponents. "If you had one game to win and your life depended on it, you'd want him to pitch it," Stengel said of Ford. Stengel refused to overuse his ace.

  • As a rookie in 1950, Ford was called up in mid-season. He went 9-1 in 12 starts and tossed a shutout in that fall's World Series.

  • Ford missed the next two seasons while serving in the military in Korea. But when he returned to New York in 1953, he had an 18-6 record to help lead the Yankees to their fifth consecutive World Series.

  • Late in his career, Ford was known for his fabulous spitball.

  • Had a career 2.74 ERA.

  • Went 24-7 with a 2.74 ERA in 1963.

  • Averaged 16 wins and only 7 losses a season from 1953-60.

  • Inducted in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974.
