  • Holds the NL record for career strikeouts with 4,000.

  • Leads all left-handed pitchers with 4,136 career strikeouts in the NL and AL combined.

  • Had one of the most spectacular seasons ever in 1972 when he went 27-10 with 310 strikeouts and a 1.97 ERA for the last place Phillies. Carlton's 27 wins accounted for an amazing 46 percent of the Phillies total of 59 wins that season, a modern major league record. Carlton led the NL in 6 major pitching categories that season--wins, ERA, starts, complete games, innings pitched, and strikeouts.

  • Was only the second pitcher in NL history to fan 300 men in a season when he accomplished that feat in 1972.

  • Won an amazing 4 Cy Young Awards--1972, 1977, 1980, and 1982.

  • After the 1972 season, Carlton signed a contract calling for $167,000 a season, then a record for a pitcher.

  • Won 2 games in the 1980 World Series to give the Phillies their first world championship.

  • Led the NL in wins 4 times.

  • Carlton's most famous pitch was his slider. He began developing it during a winter trip to Japan after the 1968 season.

  • Was on four World Series teams--the 1967 and 1968 St. Louis Cardinals and the 1980 and 1983 Philadelphia Phillies.

  • Went 14-9 with a 2.98 ERA in his first full season in 1967 to help the Cardinals reach the World Series.

  • Had his first dominating season in 1969 when he went 17-11 with a 2.17 ERA.

  • Had a league-leading 24 wins in 1980 to send the Phillies to their first World Series in 30 years.

  • Had 329 career victories.

  • Carlton was famous for using kung fu to strengthen his body. One of his favorite exercises was to bury his hands into a three-foot deep barrel of rice.

  • Had six 20-win seasons.

  • Led the NL in strikeouts 5 times.

  • Elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1994.
