Yogi Berra
Catcher

1946-63 New York Yankees
1965 New York Mets

  • Won three American League Most Valuable Player awards--1951, 1954, and 1955.

  • Holds the record for most World Series hits with 71.

  • Besides having a great bat, Berra was fantastic behind the plate. He accepted 950 errorless chances during one period of time that stretched from July 1957 to May 1959.

  • Berra was a notorious bad ball hitter, always swinging...and connecting...at pitches that no other batter could touch.

  • Berra was signed by the Yankees in 1942 but his big league debut was postponed while he served in the Navy during World War II.

  • His real name is Lawrence Peter Berra. His nickname was given to him as a child after some friends saw a movie about Hinduism. They decided that Lawrence looked just like a Hindu practicing yoga and the name stuck from there.

  • As manager, Berra led the Yankees to the World Series in 1964 where they lost in seven games to the St. Louis Cardinals.

  • Berra was the first manager to win pennants in both leagues--with the Yankees in 1964 and then with the Mets in 1973.

  • Though he was one of the greatest catchers of all time, Berra is perhaps best known for his many witticisms. Some of his most famous include: "It ain't over 'til it's over"; "It's deja vu all over again"; "You can observe a lot by watching"; and, "If you come to a fork in the road, take it."

Berra makes a throw to second, looking for a double play

  • Berra led all AL catchers in putouts 8 times.

  • Was named to the AL All Star team 15 times.

  • Had a .285 batting average over his long career.

  • Was on 10 winning World Series teams, a major league record.

  • Elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972.
