  • Threw a modern record 16 shutouts in 1916

  • Won 28 games as a rookie in 1911, a major league record

  • Pitched 4 one-hitters in 1915 while winning 31 games

  • Won the pitching Triple Crown twice, 1916 and 1920

  • After being waived to the St. Louis Cardinals during the 1926 season, he pitched complete game victories in games two and six of the World Series and then made one of the most famous saves of all time when he struck out Tony Lazzeri with the bases loaded in the seventh inning of game seven to lead the Cardinals to the World Championship.

  • Served in the military during the first world war. Came back from the service deaf and suffering from epilepsy.
