Italy was
divided into multiple more or less prosperous republics that had a habit
of falling under the influence of Austria and France. One of the largest
among the states of that time was Piemonte (also spelt Piedmont) with
its capital Turin. The state included many Italian provinces:
Alessandria, Asti, Cuneo, Navarre, Vercelli and others. In the Middle
Ages, Piemonte was a princedom in a dynastic union with Savoy. After
1720 it comprised the core of the Sardinian kingdom.
