The Other Side

Chapter One

“You’ve been to see Ryan again haven’t you?” Felicia’s voice was not accusatory; rather it sounded almost sad.

“Don’t start.” Kevin warned, motioning the waitress over for a refill of his coffee.

“I am not starting anything. It’s just that – “ Felicia wanted to tell Kevin how distant and moody he became every time he visited Ryan, but decided against it. It would only start an argument and she wasn’t in the mood to argue. “So catch me up. What’s going on with you these days?”

“Other than visiting Ryan and destroying lives? Not much.”

“Kevin, don’t do that. So you and Ellen broke up. It happens to people all the time.”

“It wasn’t that simple Felicia and you damn well know it. I’m surprised it took Ellen as long as it did to figure out that I am just not any good.” Kevin looked up as a group of doctors, including Matt Harmon entered the room. “Oh wow, isn’t this my lucky day? Here comes the president of my fan club now.”

Felicia turned around and watched Matt glare openly at Kevin. “You can’t really blame him for being upset with you Kevin.”

“I thought we had covered the I am no good part for today.” Kevin reached for his jacket. “If this is going to be another litany of my long list of sins – “

“No, don’t go Kevin.” Felicia pulled at his arm, urging him back to his seat. “We’ll talk about anything you want to.”

Kevin sat back down, clearly only partly mollified. “How are my two favorite girls?”

“Now see I knew we’d find something we both enjoy talking about.” Felicia reached for her purse. “As a matter of fact I have a paper to show you that Maxie wrote.”

“Don’t let him get to you Matt.” Karen advised, as she took Matt’s hand in her own.

“It’s hard not to considering what he did to Ellen. The man should be shot. Or at the very least neutered”

“Breakups happen all the time Matt. It wasn’t necessarily Kevin’s fault.” Matt gave Karen a look. “Okay it was Kevin’s fault but Ellen will be okay. Even the most devastating of breakups is survivable. I should know.”

“Okay, I can take a hint. I am here with you and I promise not to waste any more of my energy focusing on Kevin Collins.” Matt reached for a menu, grabbing it just as Chris reached for it. “So what do we feel like today?”

“Hey.” Chris yelled. “Share your girlfriend’s menu. The rest of us are hungry too.”

“Not my concern.” Matt replied as he focused intently on the menu. Karen handed Chris hers. “Spoilsport. So now Chris has a menu and you have none, just what are you planning to do?”

“Share yours.” Karen replied, edging her chair closer to his.

“You wish.” Matt replied playfully, holding the menu over both of their heads. “I guess you will have to do without.”

“I don’t think so.” Karen leaned in so she could whisper in his ear. Matt actually turned a little pink, and then lowered the menu to her, using it as a shield they kissed behind.

“Oh please you two. I still want to be hungry when the food gets here.” Chris commented with a groan.

“So sit at somebody else’s table.” Matt replied. “No one is stopping you.”

“Yeah great choices around here.” Eve pointed across the room. “We have Frank and his lovely girlfriend – oops silly me, I forgot that was a secret – friend Julie who are about as gloomy as a kid who just found out there is no Santa Clause. And over there we have our very own lady-killer Dr. Collins. I vote we stay here.”

“Me too. I’ll just consider Matt the lesser of all evils.” Chris replied grabbing a roll from the plate being passed around.

“Wish I could say the same about you.” Matt grumbled.

“I don’t know how else to say this. It’s over.” Frank played absently with his fork. “Actually it never was. I am going back to Courtney.”

“So all the times you told me you loved me – that was just to get me in bed?” Julie asked, hating the whine she heard in her voice.

“More or less. Look Courtney is going to be here any moment and I would appreciate it if you weren’t here when she arrives. It’s painful for her to see you.”

“Painful for her?” Julie echoed incredulously. “Courtney won. She used Neil to get you to come crawling back to her and in a sadly typical fashion that’s just what you did. I doubt seriously Courtney is feeling any pain.”

“I could ask Luke to have you removed.” Frank replied, not able to look Julie in the face.

“No need. I am going. I have no idea what I saw in you in the first place.” Julie placed on her coat and then leaned over the table. “But let me make one thing perfectly clear. The next time you and Courtney have a fight, write Dear Abby because I won’t be available.”

“Great.” Frank got up, passing Julie and sitting at Kevin’s table with his back to her. Julie realized that their little scene had the full attention of everyone in the room – including Chris, Eve, Matt and Karen. With as much dignity as she could muster Julie wiped the tears out of her eyes and headed for the door.

“Breaking up in a public place. I’m impressed.” Kevin leaned back in the chair. “Remind me to try that next time.”

“Kevin!” Felicia admonished. “Frank you really should have – “

“I know. Can we save the lecture for another time? I really need to talk to Kevin. Alone.”

“I think I’ll go say hello to Luke.” Felicia gave Kevin a disapproving look and headed for the bar.

“I don’t think she likes me much.” Frank commented.

“That’s okay. She doesn’t like me either most of the time. So you and Julie are really over huh?”

“Courtney needs me.”

“That’s good. I imagine it’s a nice feeling, being needed. Of course I do enjoy my foot loose and fancy free status.”

“Which, going by your track record, will last for about ten minutes.” Frank managed a smile. “Ten bucks says the next lady that walks through the door will be your new girlfriend.”

“Victim you mean?” Kevin pulled out a ten-dollar bill and placed it on the table. “You’re on.”
“I don’t know why you keep trying, I know a lost soul when I see one.” Luke commented, as he poured Felicia a drink. “I hate giving advice, but I just can’t help myself. Let him go before he takes you down with him.”

“I can’t. I know I should – Kevin does lousy, unforgivable things. But I have to believe there is a good person in him just trying to break free. Kevin and I have a connection, because of Ryan I guess. I just can’t explain it.”

“I can. You are just attracted to nuts.” Luke reached over to give Felicia a quick kiss, but she grabbed his head with her hands, stopping him.

“And?”

“And I thank God for that every day.” Luke replied, as he broke free from her hands, and got his kiss. Not that Felicia was exactly fighting him –

“Excuse me? If it’s not too much trouble, could I have a refill on my drink?” Chris stood before them, a very unabashedly smug grin on his face.

“Take the bottle and go away.” Luke handed him the bottle of wine. “And I mean move it kid.”

“How come you never hooked up with Felicia?” Frank asked Kevin.

Kevin shrugged. “I guess she’s just too smart to fall for my considerable charms.”

“Conceit. Gotta admire that in a man.” Frank looked up as the front door opened, a young blonde girl stood there uncertainly.

Kevin’s grin got very big. “Not that I don’t mind them being young, but that’s too twisted even for me. Pay up.”

Frank got out his billfold. “You know, I keep thinking my luck has got to change some time.”

Karen spotted the young girl, something about how lost she look tugged at her heart. She stood up and walked quietly to her.

“Can I help you? Are you lost?”

“No, Mommy is just making a phone call to Daddy and she’ll be right in. She said it’s private, that means they are going to fight.”

“Oh.” Karen looked at Matt who shrugged. “Well do you want a soda or something while you wait?”

The little girl nodded. Luke came over and inspected her. “You’re not supposed to be in here darlin’”

“My Mommy will get mad at you if you are mean to me.” She replied with a strong hint of stubbornness in her voice.

Felicia looked out the window. “There is someone in the car. Must be from out-of-town. Where are you from?”

“Everywhere. I don’t want to talk anymore.”

“Okay.” Felicia pointed to a nearby seat. “Do you want to sit down and wait?”

The girl shook her head. Just then, the door opened again, and a very fashionably dressed woman came in, her head shielded from the cold wind by a scarf.

“Mommy!” The girl wrapped her arms around her waist. “You took a long time.”

“It just seemed a long time pumpkin, I was very quick.” She pulled off her scarf, looking quickly around. “Hello Luke.”

“Why if is isn’t Ms. Coe.” Luke replied, leaning against the bar. “What ill wind blows you back to town?”

“Matt,” Karen whispered. “That little girl must be Serena.”

“Your sister?” Matt asked, turning his chair around so he could get a look. “Serena? Where’s your dad?”

“I don’t know, but I intend to find out.” Karen walked back over to where Lucy and Serena were standing.

“I was wondering.” Lucy was biting her lower lip, still holding on to Serena’s hand. “I saw the sign on the bar and I figured there only could be one Luke. I was wondering – have you seen Scott?”

“Misplaced your boyfriend? Why am I not surprised?” Felicia asked, rejoining Kevin at his table but turning her chair around so she could still see Lucy.

“Where is Scott?” Karen asked. “He left town with you. Weren’t you just talking to him on the phone?”

“Hello Karen.” Lucy replied. “I – we sort of got our signals crossed. I thought he might be in Port Charles somewhere. I’ve been trying to reach him, but – I am sure he’ll show up any moment.”

“Well if he is here, he’s forgotten to give me a call and I do so love dishing the past with that guy. Speaking of which, I have work to do. Goodbye Ms. Coe.” Luke turned around, heading back to the bar as Karen knelt down in front of Serena.

“I don’t know if anyone has told you about me, but I am your sister.”

Kevin leaned over and whispered to Felicia. “Lucy Coe?”

“Oh no.” Felicia turned back around so she could look straight into Kevin’s eyes. “Don’t even think about it. She’s trouble.”

“Good.” Kevin replied, leaning back in his chair. “I am kind of partial to trouble.”

Lucy was still watching Luke nervously. When she saw him pick up the phone, she pulled Serena away from Karen. “We have to go.”

“Now?” Karen stood up. “Where are you going? Lee and Gail are going to want to know Serena is in town.”

“I’ll give them a call. I promise.” Lucy was backing out of the room.

Karen grabbed her purse. Hurriedly she pulled out a card. “Serena this is my cell-phone number. Call me anytime.”

Lucy reached for the door handle, but someone was there before her. “Can I give you a lift?”

“No thanks.” Lucy barely looked at the stranger. “I have a car.”

“Where are my manners? Kevin Collins. Dr. Kevin Collins.” Kevin held out his hand, but Lucy ignored it. Instead she opened the door, pulling Serena outside. “You look upset. Are you sure I can’t help?”

Lucy said nothing, just got into her car and drove off.

Back in the room Matt was chuckling. “Someone immune to Kevin Collins’ so-called charm. I like her already.”

Karen took her chair back next to him. “I don’t trust her. She’s lying about Dad.” Karen picked up her cell-phone. “And I intend to find out what’s going on.”

Chapter Two

“Mommy, I want to go home.”

“I know sweet pea. But we can’t right now.” Lucy poured out the contents of her purse onto the bed. There was just enough money to pay the hotel room for one night. Scott had taken the credit cards, cleaned out the bank accounts and then disappeared. Considering how angry he was at her the last time they spoke, Lucy knew Scott could and would leave her high and dry, but he would never risk Serena doing without. Something was wrong. Scott was in some sort of trouble.

And if wasn’t now, he would be after Lucy got her hands on him –

“When is Daddy going to get here?” Serena asked. “You said he would be here. If you didn’t fight with him all the time, he wouldn’t keep going away.”

“We have talked about this Serena, Daddy and I love you but we just can’t live together anymore.” Lucy began replacing the contents of her purse. “And I am sure Daddy will be here any time now.” Anyway, she hoped she sounded sure.

“Where are we going then?”

“I wish I knew.” Lucy drew Serena in her arms for a hug. “I wish I knew.”

“Frank! Frank! Help me!” Joe was standing in front of him, there was shots being fired all around, the noise was deafening. Frank knew there was something he should do to help Joe, but his feet seemed to be rooted to the floor. “I need you, you are my big brother. Why won’t you help me?”

“Joe, hold on.” Joe was only a few feet away from him, but he couldn’t reach him. His legs wouldn’t move, he stood there helplessly, watching the bullets get closer and closer to Joe.

“Why are you just standing there?” Joe asked, and then one of the bullets hit it’s target. “It’s too late. You let this happen Frank. This is your fault. You let this happen.”

Joe began sinking to the ground, the ground that was already covered in blood.

“No! No! Don’t die Joe! I will save you, I promise.”

“Frank! Frank, you are going to wake up Neil.”

Frank opened his eyes, he was sitting straight up in bed, Courtney by his side.

“It was another one of those nightmares.” Courtney tried to take him in her arms. “You know that Joe’s death wasn’t your fault. You have to let it go Frank. It’s been over two years now.”

Frank pushed away from her. “I am going downstairs, where it is quieter.”

“Frank I just want to help.” But Frank was already gone. Sadly Courtney curled up in a ball, trying hard to fight back the tears. She should be used to his rejection by now. She should be – but she wasn’t. It still hurt. He gave her his body, but his heart he kept to himself and Courtney was greedy – she wanted all of him.

Kevin made his way to the kitchen, still mostly asleep. Not that he needed his eyes wide open to make his way through the living room, it was pretty much bare again. When Ellen left, she took all her furniture with her. It had taken Ellen an amazingly long time, but finally she got tired of his moods, his unwillingness to share (how Kevin hated that word.) It was okay; they all left sooner or later. Kevin thought briefly about Katherine Bell, Dara, all the other women who had left his bed empty but his heart intact. Ellen had come close to reaching him, way too close. Kevin was glad she was gone, for her sake.

The phone rang a welcome respite from his musings. “Hello?”

“I know it’s really early, but can I come over?” Frank asked on the other side of the line.

“Fighting with Courtney again?” Kevin chuckled.

“Not really. It’s just – I need to get away.”

“Well you called the right place, I am as away as it gets. Come on over, I’ll treat you to breakfast. All the toast you can stand.”

Karen hung up the phone. “Nothing. The police say technically Lucy isn’t a missing person so there is nothing they can do. I’ve done some checking around on my own; no one in town has seen her, Serena, or Scott. I keep thinking that she’s taken Serena and disappeared again. I should have never let her walk out that door.”

“Don’t blame yourself Karen.” Gail replied. “This is typical Lucy behavior unfortunately and I have to admit I am getting pretty nervous myself. I just can’t bear to think about Serena being so close – and not seeing her. Anything?” Gail asked Lee who was approaching them.

Lee shook his head “I am worried about Scott.” Lee placed his briefcase on the nurses’ desk. “If Lucy is telling the truth and she really doesn’t know where he is, and he didn’t come home to us, where can he be? And what kind of trouble is he in?”

Kevin and Frank made their way into General Hospital. “I was kinda hoping for a boy, but a girl is okay too. As long as Neil is saved, that’s all that’s important. Him getting well, that’s the only thing I am concerned about.”

“You know Frank there are no sure things – “ Kevin replied, as gently as he could.

“Neil is going to be okay! He has to be okay! I am not going to let him down like – “

“- like you did Joe.” Kevin finished for him. “At the risk of sounding like a broken record, Cooper killed Joe, not you.”

“I know that.” Frank stopped walking. “Can we please not talk about him all the time? Actually it doesn’t matter; I’m late for work. Thanks for breakfast and the lift to work.”

Before Kevin could even get out the word goodbye, Frank was gone.

“Kevin, do you have a minute?” Julie had waited for Frank to leave to make her presence known.

“Sure, come in to my office.” Kevin unlocked his door. “I must say this is a surprise.”

“I – I know you and Frank are close. I was just wondering – “

“I don’t think it would be appropriate for me to get in the middle of yours and Frank’s lover’s quarrel.” Kevin replied, resorting to his professional voice.

“I – I was just wondering, if you know whether or not Courtney was blackmailing him or something. Or if this is just about Neil” Julie sat down on the very edge of one of Kevin’s chairs. “He’s seemed so distant lately. And then this breakup happened out of the blue.”

“I’m sorry Julie but you’ll just have to ask Frank – or Courtney. Is there anything else?”

“I am worried about Frank that’s all. I thought you were his friend, and that you might be concerned too.” Julie got up to leave. “I am sorry I bothered you.”

“I know you didn’t ask me for any advice, but this is your lucky day because I am going to give you some anyway. On the house.” Kevin walked over to her. “I hate seeing you unhappy all the time. Maybe it’s time you faced some your demons instead of hiding behind Frank’s.”

“I came here to talk about Frank, not me. Besides I don’t have any demons.” Julie replied, squaring her shoulders.

“I think you do. And I think you know exactly what I am talking about.” Kevin returned to his desk. “How is your father doing by the way? Is he adjusting to Ferncliff?”

“She just appeared out of the blue?” Jake asked. “I always miss the good stuff.”

“You should have come with us.” Matt picked up another chart. “I would rather ate dinner with you than Bonnie and Clyde.”

Jake laughed. “Chris and Eve aren’t that bad. Yet. How is Karen taking all of this?”

“She’s upset. She hasn’t heard a word from Lucy or Scott in years, and then she had only a minute with her and Lucy took Serena away again.” Matt threw down the chart he was attempting to read. “I am going to go check on Karen.”

“Wait, I’ll go with you.” Jake quickly followed Matt. “I am not taking the chance of missing something good again.”

“I am going to call Garcia one more time.” Karen reached for the phone. “Surely, there is something he can do.”

The elevator door opened, and Gail nudged Karen, it was Lucy.

“Serena!” Gail ran to her, trying to give her a hug but Serena clutched Lucy’s hands tightly. “Do you know who I am? I am your grandmother.”

“Is Daddy with you?”

“No,” Gail straightened up, looking at Lucy. “I haven’t seen him honey.”

Lee joined Gail and smiled at Serena. “We are very happy to see you young lady. We missed you a lot.”

Serena looked up at Lucy. Lucy smiled her best reassuring smile. “Hello Lee. Gail.”

Lee and Gail nodded back. “Can I talk to you a moment?” Lee asked her.

Lucy turned visibly whiter but mumbled a yes. “You stay here with your Grandma pumpkin, and I will be right back.”

Matt and Jake joined Karen. “Is that her?” Jake asked.

“Yes, and I intend to find out what’s going on. Do you want to come with me?” Karen asked Matt.

Matt took Karen’s hand in his. “I am always here for you.”

“Don’t mind me, I’ll just watch from here.” Jake leaned against the desk.

“Oh excuse me.” Kevin had just turned the corner and almost ran right into Lucy. “Hey I know you. You’re the lady from last night.”

“If you don’t mind, I am trying to have a private conversation.” Lucy groaned as Matt and Karen joined them. “Does everyone have to be part of the inquisition?”

“Dr. Collins, can I help you with something?” Lee asked.

“Oh no, I was just going to consult with – Jake.” Kevin had just seen Jake from the corner of his eye. “Carry on.”

“Thanks for the permission.” Lucy replied through gritted teeth.

“When was the last time you saw my son?” Lee asked, once Kevin was a safe distance away.

“You think I have something to do with him disappearing don’t you? Would I be wasting my breath if I told you that I have changed, we both have changed? “ Lucy asked. No one responded. “Okay let me put it to you this way, do you think I would be going around town announcing he was missing if I had anything to do with him being gone?”

“I don’t know, you tell me.” Lee replied.

“Why aren’t you two together? I thought you had gotten married.” Karen gripped Matt’s hand tightly.

“We were married and now we are not. And I don’t know where Scott is, I wish I did.” Lucy took a deep breath; she might as well bite the bullet now. “ Lee, I was wondering – is there any way you could float Serena and me a loan? It would only be until we find Scott.”

“You don’t have any money of your own?” Lee asked. “Where is all of the money Dominique left you and Scott and Serena?”

“Most of it is in a trust for Serena. And my money and Scott’s is well – I just can’t get to it right now.” Lucy suddenly felt very very tired. “I wouldn’t ask, but this is for Serena.”

“Scott left Serena without money? I don’t like the sound of this at all.” Karen looked over to her grandfather.
“Something is wrong, I just know it.”

“Why don’t you and Serena stay with Lee and me for the next few days until we straighten all this out?” Lee asked Lucy.

“Thank you.” Lucy actually would rather stay just about anywhere else, but she didn’t have a lot of options at the moment. “I’ll just go back to the hotel and get our things.”

“And just leave Serena here with us. We’ll take care of her.” Lee’s voice left no room for argument. Lucy knew he was afraid she was going to disappear again. Karen and her boyfriend were also looking at her suspiciously. Less than a day back in town, and she felt like the old Lucy Coe again. The town pariah. She could feel her confidence ebbing away.

“Let me just explain everything to Serena.” Lucy took Serena aside, while Gail joined Matt, Karen and Lee.

“What do you think?” Lee asked Karen.
“I think she’s hiding something.”

“I think so too.” Matt responded. “She seems to be very nervous about something.”

“I asked her to stay with us.”

“Good.” Lee linked her arm with her husband’s. “That way we can keep an eye on her, maybe figure out what kind of game she is playing.”

A few minutes later, with Serena safely in the hands of Lee and Gail, Lucy headed to the Nurses’ desk, ignoring Kevin and speaking only to Jake. “Is Dr. Jones here today?”

“Well isn’t this my lucky day.” Lucy spun around to look in the unfriendly face of Bobbie Spencer. “What rock did you crawl out of?”

“Boy this day keeps getting better and better. My very own welcome home committee.” Lucy didn’t even attempt a smile. “I would love to stay and chat but I so hate wasting my time.”

“And stay away from Tony!” Bobbie yelled at Lucy who was heading back to the elevator.

“So you and Lucy Coe – close huh?” Kevin asked Bobbie.

Bobbie looked at Kevin warily. He was a good doctor, but there was something about him she didn’t quite trust. And the long line of broken hearts trailing in his past spoke volumes about him. But even so, he didn’t deserve Lucy Coe. No one did. “Stay away from her Kevin. She’s trouble.”

Kevin grinned. “I know. Ain’t it great? Catch you later Jake.” Kevin headed straight for the elevator, just as the elevator doors closed. Undeterred, he pushed the button going down, he wasn’t about to let this opportunity pass him by. “Hey, wait up a second.” Kevin finally caught up with Lucy at the parking lot. “You seemed upset up there. Are you sure there is nothing I can do to help?” Kevin made an elaborate show of looking around and then leaned over to whisper to Lucy. “I’ll let you in on a little known secret, I am really a knight in shining armor. It works out great - I rescue you and then you have to reward me.”

There was something about this man that unnerved her, even haunted her, but Lucy didn’t want him to know that. “In case you didn’t realize it stalking is a crime. Go away. I am not a damsel in distress and I don’t need rescued.”

“You could have fooled me, but okay whatever you say.” Kevin leaned against her car, ignoring Lucy as she opened her car door anyway. “Rescue me then, that would probably be even more fun.”

Lucy started her car, turning her radio on full blast as she did so. Without so much as looking in Kevin’s direction, she quickly put her car into reverse. Kevin had to jump in order not to be hit.

Kevin watched her leave, laughing harder than he had in a long time.

Eve took the chair opposite Chris in the cafeteria. “So I guess you’ll be going after Ellen’s job now that’s she’s gone.”

“Of course. That’s how I intend to get all my promotions from now on, have Kevin date the competition and run them off.”

“Be nice.” Jake reached over Chris’s shoulder, grabbing the salt. “You know that Ellen didn’t run off, it’s not her style. She just accepted another job that’s all.”

“Who asked you?” Chris rescued his salt shaker, and pointedly turned his back on Jake and spoke to Eve. “So are you planning to apply for it too?”

“Why, so you can make me date Kevin?” Eve laughed.

Chris raised his eyebrows. “It’s a thought.”

“Hey Jake, want some company?” Eve asked, picking up her tray.

“It was a joke!” Chris grabbed Eve’s arm as she tried to sail past him, knocking something into the floor as he did so.

“What’s this?” Eve asked; picking up the piece of paper that had fallen.

“I bet it’s a love note. Chris loooves his Eve-wevie.” Jake teased.

Chris nobly ignored him. “I have no idea.” Chris unfolded the paper, reading the handwritten note.

8:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, sixth floor stairwell, be there.

That was all it said.

“What the he--?”

Chapter 3

After making sure no one was watching her, Eve opened the door to the hospital’s stairwell. She cautiously made her way to the landing, feeling like a movie character-with-more-boobs-than-brains walking straight into a trap as she did so. All that was missing was the creepy music.

“Just what do you think you’re doing?”

She winced and turned around to face her lover. “Hi Chris. Fancy meeting you here.”

“Right. Now go.” Chris’s face was wearing it’s rare no-nonsense look. “Until I know for sure what this is, I don’t want you anywhere near here.”

Eve’s chin jutted out. “How do you know that note wasn’t meant for me? I’m not going anywhere. Besides, it would be smart to have me here. If there is some kind of trouble, I can scream with the best of them.”

“If either of us were smart, we wouldn’t be down here in the first place.” Chris grabbed Eve’s shoulders. “Look, I can take care of myself but I don’t want to risk having you hurt. Go back upstairs and I will tell you everything later.”

Eve squinted up at him. “And be left out of whatever this is? I don’t think so. Like it or not I am staying.”

Chris didn’t have a chance to respond because the sound of a page interrupted him. “Dr. Eve Lamberth you are needed in Room 702. Dr. Lamberth to Room 702 stat.”

“That’s my heart attack patient.” Eve looked suspiciously at Chris. “If this is a false alarm, and you are sending me on a wild goose chase, it will be the couch for you for a month buster.”

“You had better go and see about your patient. I promise, scout’s honor, if anyone actually does show up I will tell you all about it later.”

“You are many things Dr. Ramsey, but a scout isn’t one of them.” Eve glared at him one more time before heading back up the stairs and almost slamming the door behind her.

“I thought she’d never leave.” Purred a voice right below him. Peering downstairs, Chris saw a very elegantly dressed older lady approaching him. She was looking him over in a way that made Chris very uncomfortable. “Dr. Ramsey I presume? I have heard so much about you, and if half of what I heard is the truth we will get along just fine. Let me introduce myself, I am Helena Cassadine.”

“Well I must say Lucy, this is a surprise.” Edward led her into the drawing room. “And aren’t you a sight for sore eyes? You haven’t aged a bit, what’s your secret?”

“Well thank you Edward, you were always my favorite ex-father-in-law.” Lucy accepted Edward’s offer of coffee, while looking around the room. “I missed this place.”

“Port Charles hasn’t been the same since you left, that’s for sure. So why don’t you sit here right beside me and tell me to what do I owe this visit?”

Lucy sat down and sipped the coffee, working up the courage she needed. “I was thinking about staying in Port Charles.”

“Good, glad to hear it. This town could use some livening up.”

“Thank you, I think. And I have been exploring various employment opportunities. I have had a few offers of course, but nothing that quite challenges me enough. “ Translation – Lucy had been in town for a few days now and the only job offer she had was the one Tammy offered her at Ruby’s for minimum wage. Lucy refocused on the task at hand. “And I was thinking, before I made any firm commitments I was going to give you a chance.”

Edward had been distracted by the way her hand kept fiddling with her very short skirt. “I am sorry. A chance for what?”

“To offer me a job of course.”

“A job?” Edward finished his coffee and went for another cup. “Doing what?”

“I don’t know. Anything. Everything.” Lucy joined him at the bar. “I am a very good business woman, but I don’t have to tell you that. I would be an invaluable asset. I heard that AJ was running the company now, so I don’t see how you could afford not to hire me.”

“Lucy I don’t think – “

Lucy’s phone rang, excusing herself she picked it up. “Lucy Coe speaking.”

“Ms. Baldwin. This is Alex Garcia with the Port Charles Police Department. I was wondering if I could ask you a few questions?”

Lucy knew this day was coming, but it didn’t make the butterflies in her stomach any less loud. “Of course. I’ll be by sometime this week.”

“Actually, today works better for me. Say in an hour?”

“Sure. No problem.” Lucy hung up the phone and then gave Edward a hug. “I have to go. This way, you have time to figure out where you can best use me. It will be just like old times – working together again. Give Mother Quartermaine my love. Oh and Alan too – but only if Monica isn’t around. Ta.”

“Lucy – “ It was too late, Lucy was gone. Edward put down the coffee cup and poured himself an early morning drink, feeling just like someone who had been blind sided by a tornado.

“Kevin, do you remember a long time ago you offered to counsel me?” Julie was fiddling with her purse, clearly nervous. “I want to take you up on that.”

Kevin put down his pen. “Are you sure? You might feel more comfortable seeing Gail or someone else.”

“I know you are Frank’s friend, but I also know you are very good at what you do. I think I know you well enough to know that you will be objective, and if you can’t you’ll let me know.”

“I can be objective, no problem, if you can be honest with me. First of all can you explain to me why the change of heart? When I first suggested therapy, you were very much against it.”

“I just did some soul searching and I don’t like what I found. I have gigantic holes in my life and I have been filling them with the wrong things – and the wrong people.”

“Such as Frank? I have to warn you, soul searching can be painful. You are going to have to think about things you might rather not.” Kevin stood up, and approached Julie. “Cooper for one. And your father.”

Julie nodded. “I know. I want to finally put my past in the past. I don’t think I can move on until I do.”

“Good, then I suggest we start right now.” Kevin turned on his tape recorder. “And I suggest we start with Bennett Devlin.”

“Hello Mrs. Cassadine.” Chris shook her hand, noting that her palms were as cold as her eyes. “What can I do for you?”

“The question is – what can I do for you?” Helena was circling him, her fingers crossing a path around his shoulders. “And the answer is plenty.”

Chris fought the urge to run as fast as his feet could carry him. “I am not sure I follow you.”

“Oh, but you will.” Helena looked up the stairway. “We don’t have a lot of time before your little girl-toy comes back so I will make this quick. How would you like to make some money? I have a job you would be perfect for.”

“I already have a job.” Chris had heard all about Helena, he knew he shouldn’t be here talking to her but his body refused to obey his brain and take off.

“Oh, you can keep your little job here, this will be strictly – as they say – after hours.” Helena laughed. “Here is my card, if you are interested in what I have to offer and I think you will be, give me a call. Just one condition, this is strictly between us. Don’t tell anyone else.”

Chris took the card; embarrassed to see his hands were trembling. “What kind of job is this? Because I think you should know right now that I don’t ki- hurt people.”

“Oh I have plenty of others to handle that sort of thing for me. This is all about watching; you like being a voyeur don’t you Chris? I think it’s something we have in common.” Again Helena laughed. She touched his cheek. “I have to go now. Call me soon because this offer won’t be on the table long.”

She has just left when the stairwell door opened again. Eve was stomping down the stairs, clearly miffed. “Someone unplugged Mr. Shores heart monitor. Very strange. “ Eve looked Chris over, noting that his face looked flush. “What’s been going on here?”

Chris quickly pocketed Helena’s card. “Not a thing. I guess that note was just a joke.”
“Chris Ramsey, if you are hiding something from me –“

Chris took Eve in his arms, kissing her as hard and thoroughly as he could. When Eve could finally speak she whispered. “What was that for?”

“Well I figured you are here and I am here and why waste such a golden opportunity?” Chris lowered his head again.

“Why indeed.” Eve responded as thoughts of notes and everything else became lost to the sensation of Chris’s kiss.

“What did the doctor say?” Frank asked Courtney in the waiting room.

“Neil, why don’t you read your new book? I need to talk to Daddy a minute.”

“I am not getting any better am I?” Neil asked.

“You are going to be just fine, I promise you.” Courtney kissed the top of Neil’s head. “Give us a few moments and we will all go get some ice cream.’

“Daddy too?” Neil asked hopefully.

“Daddy too.” Courtney replied as she led Frank across the room.

“Why do you tell him things like that?”

“Because he is a very sick boy and like it or not he needs you. And he’s not the only one. I need you.” Courtney took a few steps closer to Frank, but Frank just stepped away.

“I am living up to my responsibilities. I am paying for his treatment. I even fathered your new baby.”

“Our new baby. Ours.” Courtney replied, vainly trying to capture Frank’s hands. “Neil needs you, not your money. You Frank.”

“He’s not any better is he?”

Courtney shook her head, not caring that she was crying. “No, but all he has to do is hang on a few months more. This baby is going to be a miracle – for all of us.”

“I have to get back to work.”

“No.” Courtney grabbed his arm. “Come with us Frank. It would mean the world to Neil. He needs this time with us, with you.”

“I wish you would stop guilting me!”

“I wouldn’t have to, if you followed what’s in your heart. I don’t care what you do Frank; I don’t care what you say. You love Neil, and you love me. Hiding those feelings don’t make them any less true.”

“I guess you glossed right over the fact I love you so much I had an affair with Julie.” Frank commented with brutal honesty.

Courtney winced. “Go then. I’ll make up yet another excuse to tell Neil. I am getting very good at it.”

Frank looked over at Neil. He was pretending to read the book, but it was obvious he was watching them instead. “Never mind. I’ll go with you.”
Courtney smiled. “Thanks Frank.”

“Don’t thank me. I am only going for Neil’s sake.”

Courtney watched as he went over to tell Neil. She had used every trick in her book to win Frank, to destroy his and Julie’s relationship once and for all and now she didn’t know why she had bothered. Somewhere deep inside of her, she felt the baby shift around and was reminded again why all of this was so important. Neil would live and Frank would love her. It was what she wanted – and she always got her way.

“Hello Mrs. Baldwin, have a seat.” Garcia pointed to the chair in front of him.

“Actually, it’s Coe. I have taken back my maiden name.” Lucy crossed her legs and then nervously uncrossed them.

“Can I get you anything?” He asked. “Coffee?”

“No, I am fine.”

“You seem to be a bit nervous, if you don’t mind me saying so. Would you feel more comfortable having a lawyer present?”

Only if he were Scott. Where was he? “A lawyer? I have nothing to hide. Why would I need one?”

“Why indeed.” Garcia sat down behind the desk. “So tell me about that note Scott supposedly left you. You don’t happen to have that handy do you?”

“No, I threw it away.”

“Hm. Your daughter’s father disappears, and you threw his Dear John – er Lucy – note away?”

“It wasn’t one of those. We had already broken up. He just wrote me he was going away for a few days, I didn’t think the note was important at the time.”

“Oh I see. When did you two break up? Was it recently?”

“The last time was about three months ago I think.”

“The last time?”

“Scott and I break up and get back together. It’s what we do. One of those can’t live and can’t live without sort of things.” Lucy shifted in her seat again.

“But he’s somehow managed to live without you for what – two weeks now?”

“About.”

“And you have no idea where he is?”

Lucy shook her head.

“And he cleaned out your bank account, canceled all your credit cards and vanished without a trace or a word to his parents. Must have been some fight.”

“There was no fight.” Lucy crossed her legs again.

“If you say so. Does Scott have any enemies?”

“Of course not. Well no recent ones anyway. Look officer – ah Garcia was it? I already went over this with Detective Taggert.”

“You do want Scott found don’t you?”

“Of course I do.” So I can ring his scrawny little neck, Lucy added silently to herself.

“Well in order to do that, you have to be honest with me. You have to tell me everything you know. Scott’s life could depend upon it.”

“You don’t think someone has hurt him do you?” Lucy asked, truly alarmed.

“I don’t know. That’s why I think it’s important that we find him. Tell me Ms. Coe, it’s been several years since you left Port Charles. What have you and Scott been up to in the mean time?”

“Up to?”

“You know, job wise. “ Alex was taking notes the entire time he was talking to Lucy. What could he be writing she wondered?

“Oh that. You know running our companies and other things. I fail to see how that has anything to do with Scott being missing.” Lucy looked at her watch. “If that is all, I really do need to go check on my daughter.”

Alex leaned over, grabbing the edge of Lucy’s chair. “I make my living reading people Ms. Coe and I would bet my badge that you are hiding something. It will go better for you in the long run if you just come clean now.”

Lucy swallowed. “What would I be hiding? I have told you everything – everything that’s important to your investigation.”

“I hope for your sake that is true.” Alex pulled back, allowing Lucy to stand up. “Until we meet again.”

Lucy walked as fast as she could out of the station. She had better find Scott. And soon.

“So how is it having your little sister around?” Matt asked Karen.

Karen lifted her head up from his shoulders. “It’s great. If only Scott were here too – “

“Any sign of him yet?” Matt asked.

“None. And Lucy hasn’t been exactly forthcoming in that department.” Karen rested her head on his shoulder once again. “I am so worried about him. I am hoping he’ll show up soon, and I’m kinda hoping also that he’ll stick around for a while.”

“You want a chance to get to know him, don’t you?” Matt smoothed back Karen’s hair.

“I never had a father in my life. I don’t mind admitting that I would love a chance to find out what it feels like.”

“I wish I had a chance not to have known my father.” Matt said, with more than a trace of bitterness.

“We are a pair aren’t we?” Karen lifted up her face to his. “Kind of like orphans.”

“I used to feel that way, but not anymore.” Matt kissed Kaaren gently. “You are my family now. The only family I will ever need or want.” Matt grinned rather devilishly. “Well until the six kids come along.”

Karen gasped. “Bite your tongue.”

“I could. Or you could do it for me.” Matt noted mischievously.

“Why Matt Harmon, I do believe you are propositioning me.”

“What if I am?”

Karen was already removing his shirt. “It’s about darn time.”

Lucy entered the small bedroom she shared with Serena and threw her keys against the wall. Why had she ever returned to this God-forsaken town? Everyone looked at her and saw what they wanted to see –the old Lucy. She had changed, but none of them could see it. None of them wanted to. Everywhere she went were whispers, accusations, and distrustful looks. It had taken a long time for her to find her self worth after leaving this town and after a few days back all her hard-won confidence in herself was slipping away.

Serena, on the other hand, was having the time of her life. Everyone was doting on her, spoiling her. Lucy was happy she was bonding with Scott’s family, but more and more felt like an unwanted presence. Lee and Gail were polite to her and nothing more.

And where was Scott? Why hadn’t he called Serena? Something was wrong. Everything was wrong.

Lucy laid down face first on the bed, unwilling to give the town her tears. She would prove them wrong. She would find Scott. All she had to do was figure out a place to start.

There was a knock on the door; quickly wiping away the tears Lucy went to answer it.

Standing in the doorway was Kevin Collins. “I hope you don’t mind, Gail let me in.”

“Actually I do mind. A lot.” She went to shut the door, but he grabbed it. “You really are a stalker aren’t you?”

“Is that any way to talk to your one and only friend in Port Charles?” Kevin let himself in the room, ignoring the ferocious looks Lucy was sending his way.

“We are not friends. We are not anything.” Lucy gasped, finally remembering why he seemed so familiar to her. “I know who you are! You’re Ryan whatshisname that killed all those people.” Lucy looked around, desperately seeking a weapon. The only thing she could find immediately was a pillow, which she held up high. “Get out of here right now. I am calling the police.” Kevin took a few steps forward. “Don’t come any closer, I am warning you.”

Kevin laughed. “Yeah those pillows can be real killers. It’s okay Lucy. I am not Ryan. Would Felicia be hanging out at Luke’s with me if I was?”

Lucy wasn’t about to let her guard down. “Probably, she’s a born blonde.”

Kevin laughed again. “I am Ryan’s twin Kevin, Ryan is locked away safely in Ferncliff. Ask Gail, ask anyone.”

Lucy slowly lowered the pillow. “Maybe you’re not Ryan, but I still don’t think you are to be trusted.”

“I’m not. That’s why I am so much fun.” Kevin reached up and grabbed the pillow, taking it away before Lucy had a chance to react. “Come on admit it.” Kevin was standing closer to her now. “You’re intrigued.”

“I am not.” Lucy denied, but she found herself mesmerized by the heat coming from his eyes.
Kevin reached out, stroking her cheek. “Liar. And a very pretty one at that.”

“Don’t touch me.” Lucy scooted back, and then realized she was very near the bed. Hating the way his eyes laughed at her, she decided she wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of moving. “Why are you here anyway?”

“I hear you are in a market for a job and I just happen to be hiring right now.”

“Well you heard wrong. I don’t need a job, I am doing just fine.”

Kevin raised his eyebrows. “That’s interesting, because according to Tammy you were in the diner begging for any and all job leads just yesterday. “

Lucy had forgotten how small townish Port Charles was. “That was yesterday. Things have changed so you can just go away now. I don’t need a job or anything else from you.”

Kevin shrugged. “Okay, whatever you say. “ He replaced the pillow on the bed, as Lucy eyed him wearily. As he passed by her again, he grabbed her hand and kissed it. “Until we meet again my lady.”

Lucy snatched her hand away. “We won’t if I see you coming first.” Lucy watched him warily as he crossed the room. “Not that I ever would be interested, but what kind of job were you going to offer me?”

Kevin halfway out the door turned back around. “Who knows? Maybe I was offering you the same job that nice man in Ruby’s did.” Kevin shut the door right before the pillow hit. His laughter rang in Lucy’s ears long after he left.

If you would just have a seat over there Ms. Devlin, we’ll get your father for you.”

Julie thanked the nurse and took a seat in the corner of the room, nervously watching all the patients interacting with their visitors. She had never been to a place like this before, and it was taking all her willpower to stay here now. Glancing around the room, she was surprised to see Kevin there playing checkers with one of the patients.

How nice of him! He knew she was anxious about seeing her father again and he came here to give her moral support. Julie eagerly made her way over to his table. “Hello Kevin. You don’t know how happy I am to see you here.”

Kevin looked up; he seemed a bit surprised. The man sitting across from him said. “He’s not – “

Kevin ignored him, standing up to take her hand. “Not half as happy as I am to be here. Why don’t you have a seat? Brian was just leaving.”

Brian opened his mouth to protest, but Kevin cut him off. “Weren’t you Brian?”

Julie smiled at Brian as he left. “Well just for a moment. I am waiting for my father.”

“Of course you are. But we might as well keep each other company while you wait.” Kevin indicated the empty chair again, and Julie gratefully sat down.

“I must admit this place makes me very nervous.’ Julie leaned over to whisper to Kevin. “I have never been around so many – well you know, people like these before.”

Kevin took Julie’s hand in his, surprising her because he had never done anything like that before. “Hey nothing to it. If you’re good I’ll show you the secret handshake.” Kevin leaned over and his face was inches from Julie’s. “And if you are really lucky, they’ll let you into the club.” Kevin winked at her and then squeezed her hand. “Just stick with me kid and you will be just fine.”
